Could I inquire again about my JOLLY ancestor? Pheobe was her name and she was b. ca. 1775. She married MARTIN, then Richard Weaver BARNES ca. 1795, and finally following Richard's death, Ezekiel LEWIS. She had a daughter Priscilla by MARTIN, Susan, Amelia and Weaver by BARNES, none by LEWIS. Doesn't anyone have a Phoebe in their line. Every year about this time there's a story that makes the rounds on a lot of the genealogy lists about the signers of the Declaration of Independence and their hardships. I have it saved on my computer so I drug it out and thought I'd pass it along. Look it over and give some thought (and thanks) to what they sacrificed to give us our freedom. It's a very interesting story. And enjoy this Fourth of July! ======== Just take a moment on the 4th of July Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence? Five signers were captured by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. What kind of men were they? Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists. Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags. Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward. Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton. At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson, Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months. John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken heart. Norris and Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the stories and sacrifices of the American Revolution. These were not wild eyed, rabble-rousing ruffians. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing tall, straight, and unwavering, they pledged: "For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor." They gave you and me a free and independent America. The history books never told you a lot of what happened in the Revolutionary War. We didn't just fight the British. We were British subjects at that time and we fought our own government! Some of us take these liberties so much for granted...We shouldn't. So, take a couple of minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid. Author Unknown. Remember: freedom is never free! American army retreats to Lake Champlain from Canada. June 12 - 27 -- Jefferson, at the request of the committee, drafts a declaration, of which only a fragment exists. Jefferson's clean, or "fair" copy, the "original Rough draught," is reviewed by the committee. Both documents are in the manuscript collections of the Library of Congress. June 28 -- A fair copy of the committee draft of the Declaration of Independence is read in Congress. July 1 - 4 -- Congress debates and revises the Declaration of Independence. July 2 -- Congress declares independence as the British fleet and army arrive at New York. July 4 -- Congress adopts the Declaration of Independence in the morning of a bright, sunny, but cool Philadelphia day. John Dunlap prints the Declaration of Independence. These prints are now called "Dunlap Broadsides." Twenty-four copies are known to exist, two of which are in the Library of Congress. One of these was Washington's personal copy. July 5 -- John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress, dispatches the first of Dunlap's broadsides of the Declaration of Independence to the legislatures of New Jersey and Delaware. July 6 -- Pennsylvania Evening Post of July 6 prints the first newspaper rendition of the Declaration of Independence. July 8 -- The first public reading of the Declaration is in Philadelphia. July 9 -- Washington orders that the Declaration of Independence be read before the American army in New York -- from his personal copy of the "Dunlap Broadside." July 19 -- Congress orders the Declaration of Independence engrossed (officially inscribed) and signed by members. August 2 -- Delegates begin to sign engrossed copy of the Declaration of Independence. A large British reinforcement arrives at New York after being repelled at Charleston, S.C. 1777 January 18 -- Congress, now sitting in Baltimore, Maryland, orders that signed copies of the Declaration of Independence printed by Mary Katherine Goddard of Baltimore be sent to the states. I would love to hear from anyone who has information about the line of JOLLYs that my ancestor hailed from. She married Richard WEAVER BARNES in MD ca. 1799 but already had a daughter Priscilla by Unk. MARTIN. Phoebe and Richard had Susan, Amelia (mine) and Weavor prior to Richard's death ca. 1812. She then married Ezekiel LEWIS who was another Rev. War Officer, the same as BARNES. I have no idea as to her parentage. Do we have anyone out there who might have a clue to her ancestry? BARNES was from England and suspect that JOLLY was also but have no connection. She died in Perry CO., OH where she moved following Ezekiel's death. Hi All, I know that some of you already have this but it may be of interest to some of our new arrivals. I am curious about the William mentioned. It seems he died prior to Jos writing this will. I am fairly sure that his wife is Philippa. They were still in Cornwall in 1859 as he was pressent at his father's death and seemingly from the details on the certificate john lived with William and Philippa at Meledor Downs (? ), St Stephen in Brannel. They are also on the 1851 census. They must have gone to USA after 1859. Can anyone throw some light on this one? Kay PS This Joseph is Pat's problem Jos. Joseph Jolly deceased 010515 (in column) South Australia In the Supreme Court Testamentary Causes Jurisdiction Number 479 Be it known that on the second day of April 1889 the last will and testament a copy whereof is hereunder written of Joseph Jolly late of Number 15 Ferris Town in the city of Truro but late of Penryn in the County of Cornwall Retired Farmer deceased who died on the Ninteenth day of January 1889 at Plymouth in the County of Devon in England was proved and registered in the Supreme Court of the Province of South Australia and that administration of all and singular the personal estate and effects of the said deceased within the said Province was granted by the aforesaid Court to Richard Lathleen of College Park in the said province Gentleman one of the Executors named in the said will / Henry Jolly one of the executors named in the said will having died on the twenty sixth day of December one thousand eight hundred and eighty eight / he having been sworn well and faithfully to collect get in and administer the same by paying the just debts of the said deceased and the legacies contained in his said will and to exhibit a true and perfect inventory of all and singular the said estate and effects and to render a just and true account thereof whenever required by law so to do. Power being reserved of making the like grant to Edward Hosking the other surviving executor when he shall apply for the same. I appoint Edward Hosking of Claremont Terrrace Truro aforesaid Ironmonger Henry Jolly of Mintaro Adelaide South Australia Builder and Richard Lathleen of College Town Adelaide South Australia aforesaid Trustees and Executors to this my Will and whom I Give and devise all my real and personal estate whatsoever and wheresoever situate nevertheless upon Trust as soon as convenient after my decease to convert the same respectively into money and when so converted thereout in the first place to pay my just debts funeral and Testamentary expenses and in the next place to pay Captain Richard Piper of Wallaroo Mines Adelaide South Australia aforesaid Mine Agent the sum of Fifty pounds free of Legacy duty and then to divide the balance into eight equal parts and to pay one of such equal parts to Betsy Jolly the wife of Joseph Jolly of Moonta Mines Adelaide South Australia Mine Secretary nevertheless for her sole and separate use and not to be subject to the debts control or engagements of her present or any future husband she may marry and to pay or divide another of such equal parts to or amongst the child or children of my brother William Jolly who died in Jewell County Kansas United States of America in the case of females for her or their sole and separate use and not to be subject to the debts control or engagements of her or their present or any future husband or husbands she or they may marry and to pay another of such equal eight parts unto Mrs Jolly of Guernsey the wife of my brother John Jolly nevertheless for her sole and separate use and not to be subject to the debts control or engagements of any husband she may marry and to pay another of such equal eight parts unto my brother the said Henry Jolly one of my Executors hereinbefore named and to pay another of such equal eight parts unto my sister Catherine Porter of Penryn in the County of Cornwall nevertheless for her sole and separate use and not to be subject to the debts control or engagements of any husband she may marry and to pay another of such equal eight parts unto my sister Louisa Geach the wife of S------ S------ Geach of Graham Town South Africa Wheelwright nevertheless for her sole and separate use and not to be subject to the debts control or engagements of her present or any future husband and to pay another of such equal eighth parts to my brother Thomas Jolly of Parkes Sydney New South Wales and to pay the remaining equal eight part to my brother Blackmore Jolly of Guernsey Stone Contractor. Provided always and my will is that in case any or either of the before mentioned Betsy Jolly Mrs Jolly the wife of John Jolly, Henry jolly, Catherine Porter, Louisa Geach, Thomas Jolly and Blackmore Jolly shall die in my lifetime leaving children then respectively surviving I hereby direct that each children shall take his or their parents share if more than one in equal shares to be paid in the case of males on their respectively attaining the age of twenty one years and in the case of females on their respectively attaining that age or marrying nevertheless for their respective sole and separate uses and not to be subject to the debts control or engagements of any husbands they or any or either of them may marry and I direct my said Executors to invest the shares of such of the said Children who shall not at the time of my death attained the age of twenty one years or married as aforesaid in such securities as Trustees are authorized by law to invest the Trust Funds and to allow the interest thereof respectively to accumulate and to pay such accumulated Interest respectively with the principal sums aforesaid on their respectively attaining the age of twenty one years or marrying as aforesaid.
