There are a lot of Jollys in & around Leyland, mine were mainly in Whittle-le-Woods but generally the CHORLEY Registry area. I also have a computer printout my sister in Eng. supplied stating there were JOLIEs as far back as 1066 & they came over from France. Happy hunting - hope this helps someone? 3. As I understand it, the surname "Jolly" came from these origins. 1. it came from the Old French "jolif" meaning the same as the Middle English "jolly" and from Old Norse "jol" yule, a time of joy and celebration. 2. In the Middle Ages when surnames were beginning to be used, the surname was taken from the Middle English "Jolly/Jolley" meaning happy, good-humoured. 3. From the 17th Century, French immigrants with the French form "Joly" or "Jolie". My own family originated from Suffolk, and there are various pockets of them all over East Anglia. All variants of the name also appear in Kent, from the beginning of Parish Records. 3. Hi Paul, A couple of things. 1. I take it you have accessed the usual "JigSaw" agencies - I am assuming you have such things in the US? You have certainly taken on a task! I think as family historians we can all appreciate your wish to seek out your roots and that it in no way reflects on your adoptive parents - you speak so well of them. 2. Some thoughts on grandmother JOLLY - as a nurse myself I wonder if you could trace her by looking for her nurse's registration details. In Oz we are required to supply name, address, MAIDEN name and place of training - I am referring to a Registered Nurse by the way. I don't know how you would do that. We have a Nurses Registration Board in each state easily found in the phone book. You say she was a Licenced VN so that licence would be the thing to track. 3. Is there a Veterans Body that you could write to asking info on grandfather JOLLY? Do you know anyone who could do a drivers licence check for you in case he has a current licence (that is a long shot :) Don't limit yourself to that age group for g/ma & g/pa as your mother may have been the youngest of a long line of siblings! Check the Death Index (cannot remember what it's called for his death perhaps - gat a few likelies and eliminate. That is my 2 bits worth anyway Paul. Good luck and please keep us updated! :) Kay >Paul can be reached via email: > >work: paul.bishop@fmr.com >home: pbishop@mediaone.net > >Or by telephone: > >work: (508)787-9143 >home: (508)481-2536 > >Thanks once again. > >- Paul Bishop > a.k.a. 1. Jolly Family....
    2. Bishop, Paul
    3. Hi all... Just resending information, again in hopes that it may sound familiar (*grin*) to someone.. I am looking for a branch of the Jolly family, specifically, my birth family... I was placed for adoption as a baby, and though I was adopted by a very loving family, my adoptive parents have unfortunately passed away quite a few years ago. My adoptive parents had told me I was adopted very early on, and to me, that made little difference, as they were always "my parents". In any case, I decided that I would begin a search in the year 2000, and here we are. What information I have: I was born "baby boy Jolly" in San Diego, California on August 7, 1967, sometime around 6:30 am. >From "non-identifying" information from adoption agency (Children's Home Society of California), my mother was unmarried- therefore, Jolly was her maiden name. She was 20 years old when I was born, so that would mean that she was born sometime between 1946 and 1948, and again from her non-identifying info, she had been born in New Hampshire- though I do not know if her parents/family were from there... but she was a resident of California at my birth. By searching social security death index, I have not found what would be a match, so she is likely alive. My mother would be 53 years now, and had two siblings: Brother - Should be 51 Years old now; was active military when I was born... probably Vietnam; though no casualties by the name of Jolly (one non-caucasian) were recorded, so I assume he is likely alive. Sister - Should be 48 years old now; was student when I was born. Since she was 15 at the time, it is unlikely that their parents had other children than the three. My mother's parents may make it somewhat easier to nail down: Her mother- LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse). Now, I make a few assumtions: that she was probably 20 or so when she had my mother, and my mother was born in New Hampshire, so my grandmother would be in her early seventies now, and had possibly been trained as nurse in NH... though it is VERY possible she could have trained elsewhere, Possibly in California. She would have been in her early 40's at my birth (based on assumptions). I do not know whether or not she is alive. As my mother's maiden name was Jolly, my grandmother was a Jolly by marriage. Her Father- He was also probably in his early twenties when my mother was born, so he is also in his early to mid seventies at this point. At the time of my birth, he was a "mobile home transporter" - which seems to indicate that he would had to have had some type of special driver's permit; possibly a CDL or Heavy Carrier. He was also listed as retired military in the non-identifying documentation. Since this is true, and he would probably have been born in the 1930's, his service was unlikely to have been in World War II- which puts him in the service most likely during Korean War and possibly Phillipines. Again, I do not know if he is alive. This is just about all that I have. The information I have on my birth father is cursory at best, so I am figuring that that I will have to identify my mother, and if I decide to contact her, then I would have to see if she remembers more information about him, and try to take it from there. I cannot emphasize enough that my goal is NOT to disrupt anyone's lives... I am looking for geneological and medical information, as well as a "sense of where I came from"... as well as (possibly) discovering whether I have siblings/half-siblings out there somewhere. Thank you all on the list for putting up with this huge email.. I don't mean to be a pest, but I decided many years ago to do this once the century turned, and if I am anything, I'm not one to give up! If any of this sounds like a possible relative, please email me, or forward this email to them... I can be reached via email: work: paul.bishop@fmr.com home: pbishop@mediaone.net Or by telephone: work: (508)787-9143 home: (508)481-2536 Thanks once again. - Paul Bishop a.k.a. 3. Hi Emma, Our JOLLYs go back to at least the 1600s and probably before in Cornwall. Yes, I agree that there are some from France, but whether they all are I don't know. Some of our line also went to Guernsey and married into French families there. 3. Thanks for posting this. I'm not sure what the original query was, but I have an ancestor called William JOLLY, who was born c.1843 whose father was James Jolly. He was supposed to have been born in Montrose in Angus, Scotland, but his birth wasn't registered. If anyone researching William JOLLYs of similar period comes across my ancestor, please don't hesitate to get in touch. On another point, I am interested in gauging where JOLLYs originated from and where they lived in clusters in the world. I have heard that the name originates from France. There are still variations on the name in France today [e.g. Joly]. I have come across clusters in Angus (19th century) up to the present day), Lancashire (19th century, but less so now), and Cornwall [not sure of the period]. I'd like to know of any other clusters that listers have come across and more on the origins of the name, so that I can try and establish some kind of pattern. Best wishes, Emma. ----- Original Message ----- From: Kay Hinnrichsen <kayhin@southwest.com.au> To: <JOLLY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, August 12, 2000 1:37 PM Subject: Vital Records - JOLLY > Quinton, > > I am posting these to the list in case they are of any use to others as > well.
