    1. Re: My Benjamin Ware Johnston Possibly Rev. War Vet of SC
    2. List, Looking at all these Benjamin Johnstons tempts me to see if anyone has anything on my Benjamin Ware Johnston brick wall. He first appears on my radar screen when the State of South Carolina granted him 140 acres on the Middle Fork of the Saluda River in north Greenville District (present-day Greenville County), SC on 20 April 1785. I would assume that SC granted him land for service in the Revolutionary War presumably in a SC unit. Indeed, I have found records of two "Benjamin Johnson"s who served in SC units during that war. One died in 1785 and was for that reason not my ancestor. The second Benjamin Johnson served in 3rd SC Infantry Regiment from 1776 through 1781 and then served in the militia during 1781 and 1782. His military service record from National Archives and Records Administration gave absolutely no biographical detail. My Benjamin Ware Johnston appeared to have 7 or 8 children according to the 1800 census including some daughters and four sons including William, Andrew, and Aaron. We don't know the names of the others. These last three married three daughters of neighbors John Franklin Young and Susan Elizabeth PARKER Young and about 1818 moved to what was then Clay County, southeast Kentucky. What happened to Benjamin? He seemed to move away from Greenville District about 1809 to place unknown. Sometimes he used the surname JOHNSON and sometimes JOHNSTON. I know he was alive in 1827 from a power of attorney he performed so one of his sons could return to SC and sell Benjamin's remaining land there. This was in Laurel County, KY, but there is no record there that Benjamin was living in that county. Does anyone have a Benjamin Johnston or Johnson born 1740s through 1760s who could have accepted that land grant from SC in 1785? His middle name is WARE, and we have no clue if that is his mom's maiden name or what. Any help? Bruce Nichols

    3. Thereis only one Benj. J. in SC Roster ofSC Patriots in the American Rev.! William Caldwell was the only Wm. Caldwell who was a Capt. He was in 3rd. Regt. Captured at Fort Howe, GA, 1777. Served as Capt. of 3rd. Regt. after 12Feb. 1778. The WARE name is quite familiar, now, if I can only think why! (Well, I am old and its late.) There is a Ware Shoals and a Ware Place, both tiny towns in Abbeville Co., SC, I believe - or Laurens Co. ----- Original Message ----- From: <Mapmaker3@aol.com> To: <JOHNSTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, December 07, 2004 6:49 PM Subject: [JOHNSTON] Re: My Benjamin Ware Johnston Possibly Rev.
