I can trace my roots directly back to Galashiels, Scotland, and the name Robert was used in my family for at least six (and probably more) successive generations (I put an end to it with my own sons named James, Andrew and Charles). If you begin to trace Johnston genealogy on the other side of the pond, the name Robert is used so often as to be frustrating for the researcher. It would not surprise me if it were the most common given name among all Johnston males alive in Scotland in the 1775-1825 time frame. -- Bob Johnston --
