Deronda; I have the Book on S.C. "Soldiers and Patriots in the A. Rev. On page 505, it lists Benjamin Johnston who served in the militia alternately from 1780 to 1783 under Capt. John Cowen. He is listed in this way in two sources: The Accounts Audited of the State of SC: AA4041 and O539. The service record of Capt. Cowen is not given; although there was a Capt. John Cowan who served under Gen. Andrew Pickens from Sept. 1779 to 20 Feb. 1783. There are still Cowans at Clemson, I believe. I knew a Ruby Lee Cowan who was about five years younger than I. She would still be an old woman now, though. There was a Miss Margaret Johnston from Atlanta who used to be honored by Clemson because she was kin to John C. Calhoun, but I doubt if Benj. was her ancestro. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Beverly Shuler
