John Johnston was said to trade with Spain. His brother, Alfred, was said to run the warehouse at Shuttlefield, Perth. John's daugfhter, Elizabeth (c1767-1854) married James WILKIE at Newburgh. Fife, 3 June 1791. I have not been able to find the name of Elizabeth's mother and there is a family story that she was Spanish. There was a portrait of a Spanish woman hanging in the hall of my great uncle in Opotiki, New Zealand, in the early 1900s, and the great uncle told my aunt that of all the family she resembled the Spanish woman the most. Elizabeth Wilkie emigrated from Perth to New Zealand with her daughter, Mary, son-in-law John Watterson, and children, arr. 17 March, 1841 on the "Lady Nugent" .
