Yes, I know you were the clan genealogist for many years. I actually met you one year in Estes Park when the Clan Johnston was the host clan. (I know you would not remember me) I used to belong to the Clan Johnston, but dropped out (won't go into those details here). However, you still did not answer my question about WHICH James Johnston was in SC. Was it the James Johnston, born in Dumfries, Scotland OR the James Harvey Johnston that (according to info he gave a census taker) was born in Ky? Am assuming that you mean the James Johnston born in Scotland. A bit of history on this James Johnston, other than what is listed. He was with Gen Burgoyne and was captured when Burgoyne surrendered. He became a convert to the American cause and left the British Army as a Lt. He married Margaret Keith, in Va (although I have no proof), and his first son was born in Va. He was a Baptist Minister, serving in at least two churches in Va and one in WVa before showing up in Ky. Not conjecture, I have copies of minutes of churches in Va he was at. Could it have been another James Johnston? Possibly, but as they say, if they shoe fits, one must wear it. Am not trying to argue the point, I just don't see how the James of Scotland could have been in SC, and if the James Harvey is who you speak of, then he had to have lied on to at least two different census takers. One would wonder why? Now, my question, obviously, is what time frame would either James have been in SC? Also South Crolina is very small. I researched every James Johnston I could find that was about the same age as my James Johnston, Jr., Esq. (He was a J.P. down in GA. > Beverly Shuler
