Since he was a Freemason, you may be able to petition the Grand Lodge of Scotland for information on his association with the fraternity, which should also corroborate the birth and death dates, along with other information that may help. Of course, I'm speaking from a knowledge of how Grand Lodges work in the US. You're best bet might be to locate a freemason who will put you in touch with the right secretary.
