Seeking the Irish roots of William A Johnston (1823-1894) born in Northern Ireland. William became a citizen in 1842 in St Louis, married Mary Cain (1825-1904) in St Louis in 1847. The family removed to Rock Island City IL in 1848. William was a shoe and boot maker in Rock Island. Brothers James and John also lived in RI. Most of the family is buried in the Chippiannock Cemetery in Rock Island City. Johnson used early on but Johnston used most often.
