    3. You need to know if he is from the Johnstons of the North or the Lowland Scots first. There were about seven great families of them. Some Roberts in both, as I remember. Then also there are some Scots-Irish Johnstons in Armagh and other counties. 3. Hi Pam from sunny SC. It is sunny, but cold! The wind is high this weekend. There is no Johns/ton County in South Carolina. There is a town by the name of Johnston, however. I presume yours must have lived somewhere on the Savannah River? Let me hear more about them. I have some info on those folks. 1. My Johnson/johnston brick wall
    2. Michael Johnson
    3. I too have a Johnson/Johnston brick wall. I am from a line that with Zopher Johnson marries Elizabeth Romine in Loudon County, VA in 1810. Now from the folks I have spoken to, Z's father was a Joseph Johnston and his father was a Zopher Johnston. That's where my brick wall comes into play. I have no clue who Josephs wife is, or who Zopher the elder is or came from. I have a 3rd cousin twice removed who is connected to Scotland Via Australia. The line I have been given is Zopher Johnston "The Elder" Born: Between: 1700-1715 Probably Scotland or Ireland Married: #1: Unknown before 1750 Probably PA #2: Prob. Catherine Harrison After 1780 (??) Probably PA Died: Before 1809 Greene, Co., TN Buried Place Unknown Probably Greene Co., TN Father of Zopher Johnson Sr. Born: Between 1754-1762 Forks of the Delaware,Northampton County, PA Married: Possibly Elizabeth <surname unknown> About 1780 Probably VA Died: Between 1836-1839 Greene Co., TN Buried Kidwell Cemetery Greene Co., TN Father of Zopher Johnson Jr. Born:10-15-1790 or 1791 Greene County, TN Married: Phebe Cooper 1-28-1817 Greene County, TN Died:12-06-1866 Hamilton Co., IL Buried:Place Unknown Hamilton Co., IL Zopher Johnson Sr. I believe had a brother Joseph. Family tradition has it that Zopher took Joseph's place during the Rev. War. Zopher Johnson Sr. was a Rev. war vet, but so far I have seen no proof that he took Joseph's place. One thing that is odd, he did name his son Zopher! Zopher IV is my 4th great grandfather. Please note...this is not my information. I got the majority of this from Stevie Hughes notes on http://www.johnsonfamilyhistory.org anyone who has seen any type of connection with my family is strongly urged to visit that page. 3. Well when I hear of a Missouri Johnston my ears perk up! My g-grandfather was born in Missouri and buried in the Snodgrass Union Cemetery 15 miles East of Butler. His Name was George S. Johnston b 1828 d. 1893 married Amanda Shirley b. 1828 d. 1908. They're buried next to a William Johnston b. 1799 (in Kentucky) and Elizabeth Johnston who I suspect are his parents. One reason I think so is that they lived side by side while counted on the 1850 census taken for Cooper County Missouri (where Boonville was located). George and Amanda had children named William, Samirah, Laura, Sally Ann, Maude J., Robert G., Richard R. (my grandfather) and Walter P. (who died as an infant). All except William and Walter were listed as children again in the 1880 census for Bates County Missouri. Richard R. and his family homesteaded in Montana around 1910-1911. Joe L. If you begin to trace Johnston genealogy on the other side of the pond, the name Robert is used so often as to be frustrating for the researcher. 2. I have JOHNSTON in S.C. but have only traced them as far back as 1848 in Charleston, South Carolina. My grandfather, Owen Benjamin Herbert Johnston, was born 1848 in Charleston and his mother & father according to census records were both born in SC but haven't been able to identify them yet. Owen's mother was Margaret (can't read last name on Owen's sister's 1927 death certificate) and father was O. Johnston. Any clues to follow would be appreciated. Shirley Johnston LaGarde

    1. Re: [JOHNSTON] Searching for Robert Johnston
    2. Dear Juanita, In one of the bio's I found of General Joe, I remember reading that one of the Peters - Peter Jr., or Peter Sr. - was a Revolutionary War Veteran. Those two men were General Joe's father and grandfather. I'm sure any encyclopedia would give that information. My line came to the USA later than General Joe's did. (Peter, Sr. is listed as arriving in Virgina in 1750.) My Robert came into the port of New York in 1811, along with his son Francis, Robert's wife Jenny Graham, Francis' wife Mary Margaret Clark, and Francis daughters, Mary - born 1807, later married John Firestone in Wayne County, OH. And Margaret - my great grandma, born 1810, died 1878, married Jacob Lawrence in 1834 in Wayne Co. OH. F and MM later had two more daughters who married men named Cooper and Davis, and a son - John Clark Johnston, born 1818, resided in Morrow County, OH, where he was the first postmaster of Blooming Grove according to a history of Morrow county. It was in this bio that I found the information that he was a 2nd cousin to General Joe. And that he was 'but four generaqtions removed from Oliver Cromwell...." My Mom had repeatedly told us about the relationeship to the Lord Chancellor of England which came through the Clark line, so I immediately knew who John Clark J was. My Mom was Bertha Lawrence (1886 - 1979) who married Otis Knowlton in 1909 in Ft. Wayne, Allen, Indiana. Her Dad was David Lawrence (1838 - 1911) born in Wayne Co., OH, moved to Lafayette Township, Allen Co., IN about 1853. He was the son of Margaret Johnston and Jacob Lawrence. It seems to me that if I could give these illustrious ancestors of ours one small pieece of advice, I would certainly tell them to marry their offspring to names other than Clark, Davis, Cooper, etc. Every one of them is as difficult as Johnston to locate. But it has been fun. I have not yet made all of the four generations to Oliver Cromwell, but I hope to do that before I add many more years to my 85. And I hope to get all the Johnston relationships deciphered, too. Optimism is about all I have left, however. Incidentally, I have Miller (another difficult name) relatives who also have taken to a 5th wheel to acquaint themselves with the USA. What fun. When my kids were small, we used to take off and tour the USA when I visited my parents who lived in Indiana all of their lives. I have lived in Iowa, Arizona, New Mexico and various localities in California during my life. After the kids had grown, I used to go by myself and they were always sure something terrible would happen to me, but nothing bad ever did. It was good to visit where I had lived previously, and then my family and friends all over the country. I have been ill for the last five or six years so I cannot go exploring now, but I have wonderful memories of doing that. Good luck. I hope we do turn out to be connected. It is much more exciting to do this with someone than alone. Jeanne Knowlton Eldredge
