Hi Doc Flanders! Beverly here. I am facing surgery on Monday; so am getting ready for bed earlier than usual. Hope you are well. I wish I could break through my "brick wall" on old Sgt. James Johnston who went from Camden Dist., SC, to Burke Co., GA, and became first a lawyer, thne later a State Senator of Twiggs Co., GA. Of course both Burke and Twiggs are burned out counties. What I do have is his will, his portrait, everything about his second wife, Amey Lanier, and almost nothing about his first wife, Mrs. Mary Garner and her Johnston children. She already had a son named Richard Garner, then had five children after she married James J.: John, Young, Alexander, Mary and Sarah. Are you still practicing Opthalmology? Matt and Linda: How did you break that break wall? Wish I knew how! Hello there! My first post to this page is a pleasure because it comes as part of the demolition of an enormous "brick wall" that has seen me working various angles for the past 5 years or more. In any case, I am looking for information regarding Robert Johnston (born June 1825 in Ireland) and his wife Jane (born Jan 1830 in Scotland) who came to the United States as children (at ages 5 and 8, respectively) - moved to Canada where they had the bulk of their family and then to Missouri in 1871. They lived for a time in Shelby County, Mo. and then moved to Barton County, Mo. in the mid to late 1890's. The couple had 9 living children in 1900 amongst whom were Robert (born 1858), Anna (born 1862), Alexander, Thomas, William, John and Eliza (born 1875 in Missouri). After 1900 the only one I can find is Robert who is living in McHenry County, North Dakota. In any case, if you have information regarding this family or would like to share findings please drop me a line. Matt Smith Richland, Wash.

They had 7 children: Sarah, James, Henry, Sydney, John Wesley, & unknown Brown. Hi Sandy, My William Johnston is not yours but knowing about him might help you. He was born in Randolph County VA (now WV) in 1796, the son of another William Johnston. His father was born in Anondale Scotland and died and buried in Monroe County OH. The younger William moved to OH about 1820 I think and most of his children were born in Monroe County. He had a son, also named William, but not your William either. His son was born in 1830 and died in 1864. He had three brothers that I know of named John, James and Elijah. I have no other information on any of the three but since their father and brother was in Monroe County, I expect that they were also. Any of the three would have been in the proper age group to be the father of your William. As popular as the name William seemed to be in this family, you may find that all three of them had sons named William. HI, My William Johnston was born in PA/Delaware? in Dec. 1829. He had a brother named Jonathan. My William married a Louisa Armstrong in Hardin Co., Ohio in 1855. They later settled in Wisconsin where my William died in Wisconsin in 1896. I do not know the names of his parents. They COULD be Hannah and Joseph. No proof as of yet. Rhonda

I might have more info in my files from IN. None of Jacob's children were named William. John is a recurring name in my Johnston line. Don't know if that helps. Kristen

Hi, List! I wonder if anyone could help me with this puzzle. I am searching for any information about William Johnston, b. 1825 in PA. In 1880 he was a farm worker for Mary Crook in Bethel Township, Monroe Co., OH. I have very little information on him except that he was born in PA, as were his mother and father. Any information as to whether he had been married or not, what his parents names were or anything at all would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much. Sandy
I have a 2nd ggrandfather, James Johnston who lived in Shenango Twp., Lawrence Co. PA. Have found him in the 1850 Census in the household of Jas. Johnston, age 78, presumably his father. The household: James 47 Elizabeth 44 Jane 17 Hannah 15 (my ggrandmother) James 12 Cyrus 8 Levi 6 Joseph 3 I have found James in the 1860 as Head of household and in 1870 in the household of his son Levi. This is all the information I have and I found Hannah's father's name by accident. Would appreciate any insight into this family. Kitty

Hello Lucy, I don't think we could be related, but you never know. As far as I know, mine probably came from Isle of Wight Co., VA., but some think James was born in PA. If so, he wasnot of the IofW family. I do know that his family was probably from near Brunswick Co., VA, at the time he decided to move to Camden Dist., SC . He got his GA land as bounty for his service as a GA Minuteman, in which he was a Sgt. Then he either had or went to school in order to get a law degree. Of course, in those days, I don't know exactly what that would require. Maybe nothing more than studying up and taking a test. He became a lawyer and a Justice of the Peace. Then later, a State Senator in GA. Sure wish I did know something about his family. If I could find his first wife's maiden name, it would really be nice! Listers I am looking for any info on Lois (Lowis) Johnstone b 20 Sept 1828 in Wolford Township, Grenville County Ontario. She married Miles Brown 22 Nov 1849 in Wolford Twp. They moved to Ross Township, Renfrew County where they are listed in the 1871 census with their seven children. In 1881 census, Miles is listed as a widow, so she would have died between 1871-1881.I am looking for parents, siblings, death date, or any other info I can get on her.
