Hi, List! I wonder if anyone can tell me if there is a soundex listing for Ohio in the years from 1900 back to 1850? I know there is a cutoff point, but I don't know what it is. Thanks for your help. I am searching for a person and can't find her. I though that if perhaps I could search the whole state I might have more luck. Thanks, Sandy

I received the following from another mailing list. I thought it might be of interest to this list. I believe the subject Johnston is the father of my Mary Ann Johnston b. 1818. Does anyone out there have anything on this Samuel Johnston. Hi Tami, I am a Johnston by birth and have scant information of my ancestors but here is what I know;; Great grandparents were William Johnston and Mary Gilmore, nothing else known they had a daughter called Mary cannot find out anything about her. '' '' '' son Charles Alexander Johnston, born in Coatsbridge Lanarkshire Scotland in 1855, my grandfather, who came out to Australia in 1876, married and settled here.I cannot find any of them over in Scotland on anything but I do remember my mum saying that a member of the family went over to America. Of course I did not think to ask who at the time. It could have been Mary or a cousin, uncle or a brother that we have not found. Charles called his first son HERBERT WILLIAM HENRY ( who died as a baby ) and his only other son(my dad) was called CHARLES WILLIAM ARTHUR so you can see the naming pattern stays. If you come across any of these names in your search would love to hear from you. this information is off Charles death cer, but found Mary from an old photo. Unfortunately everyone is long gone who could shed any light and I have this passion to find a living relative and I can only do that by working down the line but it is so hard.thanks for your time Desley -- No virus found in this outgoing message. Hi List: I am searching for: David Johns(t)on born circa 1787 in Georgia. By 1838, he was living in Plaquemines Parish, LA and in 1840, he married Hannah Fredericka Hoffman. In 1841, they had their only child, Alexander Henry Johns(t)on. In 1863, Alexander married Magdalena Keisel and in 1864, Hannah married Mathew Weisheimer in New Orleans, LA. Alexander & Magdalena had 3 children. Alexander died in 1869 in New Orleans. I can go on and on .. but I think this is enough for now. **NOTE: Magdalena was born in Louisiana, but resided in Harrison County, Mississippi. Her parents were Peter and Catherine. James was born in 1761. Since he was a "Jr.", guess his father was a James Johnston as well. He was in SC, Camden Dist., by 1784, and in Georgia 1785. Was the first State Senator from Twiggs County. Married Mrs. Mary Garner (maiden named Horn or Pugh?). Sons: John, Wm.Young, Alexander. After Mary's death, he married Amey Lanier, dau. of Lewis Lanier. Sons: James Butler, William Kliber, and Thomas Jef. Johnston. James served as first State Senator from Twiggs Co., GA. Family in and around Macon. Beverly Shuler

Since he was a "Jr.", guess his father was a James Johnston as well. snip > Beverly Shuler Please don't me misled into making that assumption. The use of Sr. and Jr. did not mean then what it may mean today. In fact today it is often not used the same in all localities. In the era of the mid 1700s -and before- the terms were used to differentiate between men of the same name - *no matter what the relationship*. If there were two James JOHNSTONs in a town the older would usually be Sr. and the younger Jr. They could be father-son, cousin-cousin, or not related at all. Many genealogical errors have been made by applying current usage to this practice. Regards, Sharyn
I just want to introduce myself, in hopes that there is someone out there that is directly related to me. I was born Joyce Ann Johnston in Perth, New Brunswick on April 29, 1949. My father is Harold Charles Johnston, born October 2.1926. He was born in either Morrell Siding, N.B. or Plaster Rock, N.B. My mother is Elva Leona (Murchison) Johnston, born June 8, 1930 in Four Falls, N.B. They were married July 18,1949. My dad's father was Hollis Johnston. I'm not sure when or where he was born. I only know a few things about him. Grampa was hurt in an accident and was in a hospital for a while.(I remember visiting him) I was really young as he died when I was 3 years old which would have been in 1952. He had a brother Ernest Johnston. I also remember a sister I think who lived over in Maine. My dad's mother was Ellen (everyone called her Nellie)Ashford born Sept.,1900 in Plaster Rock I believe. Dad has two sisters, Bertha Anna, born March 27, 1925 and Geneva May, born April 13, 1927. Aunt Bertha married Robert Edward Ewart Feb.23, 1946 and aunt Geneva married Bruce Raymond Wasson July 24, 1946. If there is anyone out there that recognizes anything here, please, I would like to hear from you. --------------------------------- Post your free ad now! Yahoo! Canada Personals

Dear Juanita, I sure will. I noticed that there was more than one family of Johnstons in Barton County circa 1900. However, mine were in Jefferson Twp and the others in Taylor or Jackson, I believe. Thanks for the response and I'll keep you posted. Am working on the marriage records for Shelby county, Mo. at this time. Dear Matt, My heart stopped when I first read that you were also searching for Robert Johnston, as am I! And we are also from Barton County, MO! However I don't think we are connected. My earliest record of our Robert Johnston is the birth of his son Joseph in 1784, in Fairfax county, Virginia and that he was born in Ireland. And it lists Joseph's mother as Catherine Wallace.I have no other records of other children born to this marriage. Next records are in Clark County, Kentucky. Joseph is married to Rebecca Bryan in 1806. they had Robert, Andrew, Elzabeth, Kathrine, Bryon, sophia Jane, John W. ( our direct decendant), Mary Sparks, James Riley, Wm Wallace, Harriett newell, and Thirza Emaline. John W. was born 1822 in Warren county, MO. Not sure what year his father moved to Mo. But they lived close to the Boons, as his mother was a Bryan as was Daniel Boons, Mother and they were cousins. John W. married twice. William P. Johnston was born from the second marriage and they lived in Barton county MO. He is burried in Sheldon MO, Vernon County, MO. Is son William P. had a son William P. who was my husband Morris W.'s father. All this family records are at the LDS library. If you find info on our Robert Johnston I'd love to hear from you!
