I am looking for any information about my great grandfather William Johnston. His parents were William Johnston and Jane Scott. He was born in abt. 1839 or 1840 in Hope Township, Ontario, Canada. He married my great grandmother Margaret Patten on January 21, 1903 in Peterborough, Ontario. He was 63 and she was 19 or 20 years old. They had two daughters Grace b. 1904 and Isabella b. 1905. I'm not sure when he died but I believe that he died in Peterborough, Ontario and may be buried in an unmarked grave at Little Lake Cemetery. Any bit of information if known would be very much appreciated. Thanks very much. Kathleen Higgin

He died around 1910, when my grandmother -- Margaret Virginia -- was about 6 months old. My great-grandmother would not talk about him so we have no info on him or his ancestors. I'd very much appreciate help! Heather V.

This grave is in the old Harris Cemetery at Akron, Alabama. The cemetery is off Raspberry Road, which itself is a turn off Hale County Highway 21. Just a short distance down Raspberry, there is a white church building (no name is on the church building). Turn left at the church building onto a dirt road. The cemetery is at the end of the dirt road. My e-mail address is: cssmalley@bellsouth.net. Martha Jane Clary (Ginny) May 19, 1885 January 20, 1908 Wife of N. C. Johnston

The spelling of his last name was Johnson though (the t got added later). He too was a farmer, however, I really don't know that he ever went to Canada. He was married (in IN I believe) in 1842, where he raised his family (and future generations). I wish this could be a hit for you, but doubt it is.

I am looking for information on Kate JOHNSTON who is nowhere to be found at the moment. Help, please! Her maiden name was NEWTON and sometime after the 1871 census she married Mr JOHNSTON . Margaret`s will was granted probate on 26 April 1911 to her solicitor and her nephew Alexander Johnston of Clodach Abergavenny Monmouthshire. His occupation is given as a gent, he is also described as a nephew to Margaret. 12th March 1909 Margaret made her will and named Alexander as a trustee and also mentioned her sister Kate Johnston. A codicil is later added, but the details that are altered relate to some other legacy. In 1871 Jessie, the mother is living at Heald House School in Leyland, she is a School Mistress as also is her daughter Margaret and the younger daughter Kate who is aged 37. Kate must have married after this date and I have searched through the GRO, but could not find a matching JOHNSON or similar spelling. Kate was bapt as Catherine, but all the census entries give her name as Kate. Can anyone help with any of the above please? Olive

Hi Olive, Interesting search you have on your hands. Though I'm positive I have absolutely no information on your family, I do have some questions that yo might want to clarify. Which country is this? I presume England, but I'm dumb as a rock on parishes there, so am not the least familiar with the one you mention. Have you looked for marriages in other countries, such as Spain, Jamaica, etc. for this couple? Who knows where they may have met/married. Also, are you saying that possibly Margaret and Kate married men with the same last names, tho they may not necessarily be related? Johnston is very common. Or is this possibly an error? Have you found any of these family members on the 1881 census and later? Just some things that could be of use.
