Finally, after having my male Y-chromosome DNA profile posted for two years or so on the Family Tree DNA website, I now have a perfect match with a male Johnston in New Zealand. Statistically, we have a 90+% chance that we have a common male ancestor within the last 300 years and 100% within 600 years. I'm by no means an expert on this, nor do I work for Family Tree DNA. I am just downright impressed with the potential power of this new tool in genealogical research. Now David Johnston and I have to do some old fashioned genealogical digging to prove (or disprove) the linkage. If anyone wants to email me privately on this subject I'll be glad to share what I know about it.
Please tell me more about your family. I am descended down from Sarah Johnston of Magherafelt/Moneymore area. The family kind of moved back and forth over the years. My Sarah is listed as a spinster on 1901 census. She had 4 kids - William (killed in WWI), Robert Andrew (only one who remained in Ireland), Mary who went to Canada (I have found a descendant of hers) and my grandmother Edith. Also living in the house at that time was a John McElwaine listed as a boarder. Sarah died in 1923 and is buried at St. John's C of I at Moneymore. In letters written by William who was at war, he mentioned another William Johnson and cousin Willie, someone named Daphne too. So I think there were Johnston relatives in same area and they were close. I am trying to break through and find out what happened to Robert Andrew, called Andy, who was in the Constabulary in 1922 in the B specials in Magherafelt.

Surnames: Johnston, Calvin, Hadden Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hYl.2ACIB/4141 Message Board Post: I would very much like to find descendants of Martin Johnston and his wife Maria Calvin who emigrated from Northern Ireland to the USA sometime after their marriage in 1845. Martin Johnston was born c. 1821 in Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and married Maria Calvin of Creevelea near Stonebridge, Co. Monaghan, N. Ireland, on January 24, 1845. At the time, Martin was stationed nearby in service in the Royal Irish Constabulary. Martin Johnston was listed in the Stonebridge Presbyterian church marriage register as "of Enagh, of 2nd Monaghan Regt." (or Regulars). His name was found in records of the Royal Irish Constabulary, 1816-1921: Name: MARTIN JOHNSTON Birth Date/Age: 19 Birthplace: Fermanagh Enlisted: 1840 Calvin family letters of 1911 relate the story that Martin and Maria Johnston went to America, supposedly to Philadelphia, and that Maria was still living in 1911. Children and other descendants are unknown. Maria Calvin was born about 1822, the daughter of William Calvin and Anne Hadden of Creevelea. Maria's sister Eliza Jane Calvin (born about 1817) married William Johnston on July 28, 1837, according to Stonebridge Presby. church records. William may have been a brother or other relative of Martin Johnston, but children/descendants of William and Eliza Jane are yet unknown. We do not yet know if they remained in Ireland or emigrated elsewhere. Any further information on children / descendants / allied families of Martin Johnston (born about 1821) and wife Maria Calvin, and William Johnston (born about 1810) and wife Eliza Jane Calvin, would be welcomed.

Family tradition says we have relatives from the mid-1800's in adjacent Sandy Lake Twp, and apparently they are Johnston's. My gg-grandfather was Rev. John Wesley (Westly) McCUNE (1825-1878). He was born in Mercersburg, Franklin Co, PA to Jacob Brewer McQuown and Catherine Devilbiss (Divelbiss). After studying at Western Theological Seminary and then at Carlisle PA, he was ordained and assigned to Presbyterian churches at Sandy Lake and Coolspring. He also had churches at Milledgeville, Salem, and Greenville and some responsibility in the southern part of Mercer County. He was closely associated with his brother, Rev. Robert Lewis McCune. John ("J W") resided in the NE corner of Coolspring and is buried with his family across the street from his church. His wife was Rebecca Marion JOHNSTON (1833-1887). She died while visiting her children in MN and her sister, Nancy Johnston COOPER, in Chicago. After her husband's death, she moved her family to Greenville PA. However, 2 of her children later resided in Fredonia PA: Robert Johnston McCune and Rebecca Catherine "Kate", wife of Dr. Frederick BYLES. Marion is buried next to a memorial for Rebecca Johnston (1795-1860), "wife of Robert Johnston"; this is probably her mother. Both Marion's son and grandson were named Robert Johnston McCune, and the name has carried further. However, my father's name is Samuel Johnston Long, and an early written genealogy indicates that Marion's father (or ancestor) was Samuel Johnston. My father comes from a line of Sam Long's, and I believe the 3 generations of Johnston in stone and regard the written genealogy as error. Do you or does anyone recognize any of these Johnston's? I have researched in Mercer and Franklin Counties for ages without success. While I can find an early Robert Johnston in Coolspring, none of the families seem to fit.
