Dear List, Help! I am at a brick wall. I have posted this before and so I thought I would try again. Maybe someone will know something this time. I am trying to find out information about the parents of my G-grandparents on the Johnston side of the family. They seemed to have lived in Monroe Co., OH in Stafford, Franklin Township, OH just above Bethel Township, OH. My great-grandfather Benjamin Johnston, b. c. 1862 was mar. to Catharine Iola Crook. They had ten children--only one girl whom they named Mary (I believe after Catharine's mother). This would make Airy my GG-grandmother. As far as I can figure Benjamin's mother's name was Airy Johnston, b. c. 1824. They appeared in the 1880 census in FamilySearch as one family. She was listed as a widow. Since he was 18 and she was 56, I thought that perhaps he was the baby of the family, working outside and living at home to help out with the farm. But I have never been able to find any other children. She states that she was widow, and I thought that perhaps the father had been killed in the Civil War. If her married name was Johnston, I have no idea what her maiden name was. A great uncle said that his father had a half brother named Solomon Johnston, but both sets of grandparents were dead when he was born. He never knew any of them. In the 1900 census, I think I saw her listed as living in someone's home in Bethel Twp. However, I failed to note his name. I cannot find Airy Johnston's name listed anywhere other than the two places I have mentioned. I have just drawn a blank no matter where I look. Does anyone have any information about her anywhere? Does anyone researching the Johnston families have any mention of her anywhere? Help! Help! Does anyone know anything? Thanks, Sandy

I now have posted the years 1890 through 1913. And in among the listings there were a lot of Johnston and also Johnson surnames. The editors of these old papers sometimes used whatever spelling that came to mind, so I'd check out both spellings. I am typing on the 1914 ones now and when I have the project finished it will go through 1921. But there are already a lot of papers listed and tons of information that will interest researchers of Barry Co., MO and the surrounding areas. There is a search engine on the front page, and you will probably need it - but if you just want to walk through them, then just go down the page and you will see listed the Barry Co., MO Newspaper project. Yes, I know you were the clan genealogist for many years. I actually met you one year in Estes Park when the Clan Johnston was the host clan. (I know you would not remember me) I used to belong to the Clan Johnston, but dropped out (won't go into those details here). However, you still did not answer my question about WHICH James Johnston was in SC. Was it the James Johnston, born in Dumfries, Scotland OR the James Harvey Johnston that (according to info he gave a census taker) was born in Ky? Am assuming that you mean the James Johnston born in Scotland. A bit of history on this James Johnston, other than what is listed. He was with Gen Burgoyne and was captured when Burgoyne surrendered. He became a convert to the American cause and left the British Army as a Lt. He married Margaret Keith, in Va (although I have no proof), and his first son was born in Va. He was a Baptist Minister, serving in at least two churches in Va and one in WVa before showing up in Ky. Not conjecture, I have copies of minutes of churches in Va he was at. Could it have been another James Johnston? Possibly, but as they say, if they shoe fits, one must wear it. Am not trying to argue the point, I just don't see how the James of Scotland could have been in SC, and if the James Harvey is who you speak of, then he had to have lied on to at least two different census takers. One would wonder why? Now, my question, obviously, is what time frame would either James have been in SC? Hi Beverly, thanks for the information. However, since I have two families listed, which family are you speaking of? And, where did you get your information? Hello listers: I'm searching for info on my Johnston ancestors. My g-g-grandmother was Mary Margaret Johnston. I believe her DOB is 23 Sept 1834. She was born in Bowerston, Harrison Co, Ohio. She married Jacob Norrick in Harrison Co, OH in 1852 to 1854. Her parents were Rebecca Barnhill & Samuel Revelle Johnston. Rebecca was b in March of 1806 in PA, I think. He was born on board a ship in the Harbor in Baltimore, Maryland on 3 Dec 1798. His parents were Cecellia Revelle Johnston & Unknown (poss Samuel) Johnston. They came from Ireland. I would assume from Northern Ireland. I'm interested in any info regarding Cecellia Revelle Johnston & her husband. DOB's, DOD's, where & when they were born, married & buried. Were there any other children? The children of Samuel Revelle & Rebecca Barnhill Johnston (that I have) are as follows: Mary, Joseph E., Margaret, Isabella, Samuel R., Rebecca, Elisabeth & Cecellia. Any info regarding ANY of the people would be greatly appreciated. B.L. If your hugh Sinclair Johnston came from Ireland I would guess he was from my area in Co Londonderry as the name Sinclair is local also. In the Tobermore Presbyterian Church records there is a Hugh Johnston, at least one.I have been researching my Johnston line, and if you care to e mail me at arnoldandmae@yahoo.co.uk I will give you any info that I have Mae __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
