It may well be that your line is indeed connected to Aquilla and therefore mine is probably not. Of course the Y chromosome DNA only passes father to son and would not reflect the Goodloe family connection through the female line. I printed both those charts out that you posted and will keep them for reference in the future. My closest matches so far in the DNA study think they may go back to an Arthur Johnson from the Aberdeen area of Scotland, but so far none of us can pin down any common link in our lines.

One of my DNA matches is sure he is connected to William-Chew. You will notice in the second link under the Children of Alexander, there is a son Thomas b. 1771. I think that is wrong. It should be b. 1776 and that would be my Thomas of Adair County. I don't know where these birth dates have come from. Any thoughts?

Surnames: Johnson Johnston Winn Goodloe Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hYl.2ACIB/4161.1.1.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Yes, I am aware of William that married Maragret in Middlesex Co., VA; the similarity of names, dates and places added to the challenge of sorting our line out. That William and Margaret had sons named Stephen and Henry; and our William and Mary had the same; all in Christ Church Parish! We were also long confused with William Johnston that married Ann Chew and lived in Spotsylvania Co. It was not untill copies of the Bible records for our bunch came to light that we were able to sort our bunch out (we hope!). (A Goodloe family Bible and the Waller Prayer Book passed down the Miss. branch of our Johnston family back in 1832 when Agnes (Waller) Johnston died. No one is quite sure where they are today, but information copied from them in the 1940's is available) I have long wondered if Aquilla Johns(t)on was not somehow related to my line. The George Goodloe that married his daughter was a nephew of our Mary Goodloe that married William Johnston in 1720 in Middlesex Co. Also Aquilla's wife was a Winn (before she maried a Richards and a Fortson) and Catherine, dau. of our Stephen, m. 1770 to Jesse Durrett Winn, son of Benjamin Winn.. I have looked at Aquilla but did not have info on his parents. I would appreciate seeing what you have on him and Jonathan, etc. By the way, Aquilla's name sometimes shows up with the "t" in it. I firmly believe there is a good possibility these people were all related to some extent at least. Another "long shot clue" that interests me is that our Henry Johnston in Spots. Co.VA is made guardian in 1773 to John & James Stevens, orphans of Jeremiah Stevens. ( Aquilla's grand dau., Mary Byrd Goodloe, married a James Stevens.) I have wondered if Jeremiah's wife might have been a sister to our Stephen and Henry, born between 1721 and 1727? I will have to check, I can not recall how close your DNA was to mine. I seem to recall we were only a couple of clicks off from each other. Again, makes me think a lot of the Johns(t)ons in Middlesex, Spotsylvania Co., etc. were somehow kinfolk to each other. Our William, and the two sons we know of all seem to be carpenters (joiners) by trade. Not that it is any help, but "insanity" seems to run in my line! The will of Henry's oldest son referrs to " the derangement of his mental faculties" and an article in Viginia Herald in 1794 says his wife is trying to put him in "mad house." One of his sons is referred to by others as the "unfortunate brother" and it appears there is a history of mental instability down through the years, including my grandfather's first cousin. (I sure hope those genes skipped me!)

The best I can tell you is that they do not fit into my line. So they must be yours or someone's besides my line. We feel fairly confident we know all the children of Henry Goodloe Johnston and his wife, Agnes Carr Waller; due to Bible records, etc. that we have located. Among them is Thomas Buford Johnston (b. 1774) that went to Adair Co., KY in 1812. Only one of his other brothers married and had issue and he was another Henry Goodloe Johnston (b. 1782) that went to MS in 1810 and his line is well documented as well. The other three were John Waller Johnston (1762-1800 dsp. escept for an illigitimate slave daughter); William Goodloe Johnston (1764- d. bet. 1776-1832, referred to as the "unfortunate brother" and probably had mental problems); and Stephen Henry Johnston (1779-1781 dsp). The males you listed were too old to be sons of our Thomas Buford Johnston in Adair Co., KY and he listed his children in his will and they are also in the family Bible records. There is still a big question about the children of William Buford Johnston that married Mary Goodloe in Middlesex Co., VA.in 1720. We know of only two sons, Stephen (b. 1721) and Henry (b. 1727). William died 1728 and Mary remarried, but the space between 1721 and 1727 leaves room for chidlren we don't yet have record of. As best as we can determine Stephen had only one son, Phillip, that married but died 1821 in KY without issue. There are lots of known descendants through the daughters of Stephen and Henry.Among the names the surnames they married are: Blaydes, Crutchfiled, Holliday, Winn, Hackett, Wigglesworth, Childress, Minor & Shackleford.

Sometimes those "theories" eventually prove out and sometimes they get dis-proved, but in the mean time you may have to "guess." Genealogy is often a mystery that depends on such "clues." Your line and mine have a lot of given names in common. I sure wish my ancestors had used more unique names, since Thomas, William, etc. make it hard to figure out who's who sometimes! My Thomas Buford Johnston (b. 1774 VA) came to Adair Co., KY about 1812. His father was Henry Goodloe Johnston and grandfather was William Buford Johnston that married Mary Goodloe. I notice you have a Thomas G. Johnston in your line; any idea what the G. stands for?
