Deronda; I have the Book on S.C. "Soldiers and Patriots in the A. Rev. On page 505, it lists Benjamin Johnston who served in the militia alternately from 1780 to 1783 under Capt. John Cowen. He is listed in this way in two sources: The Accounts Audited of the State of SC: AA4041 and O539. The service record of Capt. Cowen is not given; although there was a Capt. John Cowan who served under Gen. Andrew Pickens from Sept. 1779 to 20 Feb. 1783. There are still Cowans at Clemson, I believe. I knew a Ruby Lee Cowan who was about five years younger than I. She would still be an old woman now, though. There was a Miss Margaret Johnston from Atlanta who used to be honored by Clemson because she was kin to John C. Calhoun, but I doubt if Benj. was her ancestro. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. Beverly Shuler

Mrs. Dyar, who enjoyed attending musical events, was a volunteer for Music in the Mountains until she became ill. For many years, she was a member of the board of directors of the La Plata County Council on Aging and the La Plata Eye and Ear Program. She belonged to the Florida Mesa Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Dyar enjoyed playing golf, bridge, and traveling. She was christened Dorothy Jean Johnston when she was born in Fort Morgan to Fred B. and Dorothy Carruth Johnston on April 27, 1925. She graduated from Fort Morgan High School in 1943. Interested in a career in journalism and political science, she attended the University of Colorado and earned a bachelor's degree in 1947. While in her senior year, she was elected to Theta Sigma Phi, the honorary journalism sorority. On Aug. 18, 1946, she married fellow CU student Joe B. Dyar in Fort Morgan. In 1947, the couple returned to Fort Morgan. For the next seven years, Mrs. Dyar was a staff member of the Fort Morgan Times . "She may have been the only woman sports writer in Colorado at one point" said her husband. "She loved sports and quit only because they wouldn't let her in the locker room." The Dyar family moved to Denver in 1955, where Mrs. Dyar founded Jean Dyar Associates, a public-relations consulting firm. She wrote scripts for radio and television programs, organized state and national conventions, and served as executive director of a state professional organization in 1963. I really don't know of a Johnston family in Greenville, and was brought up 30 miles from there. That's where we went to shop. Could you give me a couple of first names? Beverly Shuler

(p. 3, c. 5) Saturday, November 22, 1828. Obituaries -- Virginia. Richmond (Va.) There is also a Benjamin Johnston with a large family two counties to the south in Marion County listed in the 1830 census. On the next page (115) is an Absalom Johnston with a large family and the head of household there is between 40 and 50 as of 1830. Further, back on page 114 and five households away from this Benjamin Johnston is a James McGowen household with head of household aged 40 to 50. The Benjamin Johnston I'm trying to find lived in Greenville, SC at one time and at that time his neighbors were McGowans/McGowen. Does anyone know of any connection between them? The company that I used to analyze a DNA sample was Family Tree DNA www.familytreedna.com. However, I submitted the sample as a member of the Johnson/Johnston "family" DNA study. To find out about this go to www.clanjohnston.org and go to Links, then Genealogy. There are two DNA studies that you can link to - the Johnson/Johnston study and the Border Reivers study. When you submit a sample to FTDNA they will post your results and you can also designate the results to be forwarded to either or both of these studies. I recommend both. If you don't make any designation, but just want your results posted at FTDNA with an analysis of your closest genetic relatives, you can do just this. FTDNA in turn will give you the option of having your results posted on an international study, called Ysearch, as well as the FTDNA site. Practically speaking, the US is so far ahead on this that most of the samples on Ysearch came from FTDNA and our Australian and NZ brothers seem to be using FTDNA also. There is a dearth of samples from Johnstons who live in Scotland (a shame, IMHO). The beauty of the Johnston/Johnson study is that they will classify and compare you to all other Johnsons and Johnstons - both exact matches and near misses that probably represent mutations from an original Johnson/Johnston line (or, you may be the mutant - judge for yourself). I found the Border Reiver study just plain fascinating - they analyze all of the DNA types from descendants of borderers (the "haplotypes") and find some fascinating things. For example, there are descendants of borderers walking around with Persian and Middle Eastern DNA types. How did this happen? The Romans brought mercenaries to Britain from all over their empire, and the mercenaries procreated and left their DNA. The number of submissions to FTDNA is growing by leaps and bounds. I have a hundred or so "near miss" cousins, mostly with Scottish and Irish surnames (lots of them named Hudson, Harris, Moore, Neal, etc.). The genetic link with these guys is probably 600+ years back. FTDNA offers a 12, 25 or 37 marker study (with costs that go up). I recommend that you go for broke and get at least the 25 if not the 37. The 12 marker study doesn't tell much, IMHO. Hope that this answers a few questions Bob Johnston
