He married Amanda M. F. Bankston, daughter of Spencer Bankston and Eunice McCoy, in Raymond, Hinds County, MS on August 3, 1836. I have an obituary from the March 11, 1836 Mississipian for an Andrew Johnston who died March 7, 1836 at Raymond, MS. The only information was that he was lately from Troy, Ohio. I believe this to be Jack's father, but I have no proof yet. Jack died at Hazelhurst, Copiah Co., MS on Feb. 1, 1865. I was told at the Miss. Dept. of Archives and History that they had no copies of newspapers for that time because of the Civil War. Amanda died at Locksley Plantation near Dry Grove, Hinds Co., MS in 1878, along with five members of her family during the yellow fever epidemic. Jack and Amanda's children were: Spencer Bankston, b. 1839, d. 11/1885, married Amelia America Price. They had one daughter, Florence Amelia Octavia V., b. 11/31/1841, d. 9/18/1878, married Daniel Williams, son of John Curtis Williams and Juliann Clower. Their children were Daniel, Julia A., Lewis, Walter and Augusta. Octavia, Daniel and Walter died of yellow fever. James M., b. 1845, married Mary F. Johnston Joseph "Joe" W., b. 1849, married Mary Carson. They had a son, Sam Carson. Mary died of yellow fever. Judge Edgar, b. 3/15/1851, d. 3/17/1884, married Augusta M. Rodgers. Their children were Edgar Bryant, Maggie, Ima, Gus Felton and Judgie Eleanor. Maggie died of yellow fever. William Hal, b. 1853, d. 11/13/1923, married Ella Pleasant, daughter of William J. Pleasant and Laura Ann Dunn. Their children were Lora, William Douglas (my grandfather, who married Anna Pricilla Clower, daughter of George Washington Clower and Mary Ann "Maggie" Riser), Frank William, Alston Peyton, Joe Pleasant and Willie Laura. Andrew J., b. 1856, d. 1857 Maggie A., b. 2/10/1858, d. 9/19/1873, buried at Raymond Cemetery near her uncle and aunt, Augustin H. And Lucy McVey Bankston. If any of these names ring a bell, please contact me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, Linda Johnston Foster [email protected]
Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=221 Surname: Johnston, Hornback, Biser, Branum ------------------------- I am seeking further information on my gggrandfather, William R. Johnston. He was born about 1797 in Ireland and emigrated to the US sometime before the 1850s, possibly embarking from Liverpool. He married Kissiah Hornback, born about 1828 in Bourbon County,KY in November 1853. The marriage took place in Platte City, Platte County, MO. I have found them in the 1860 census of McGee County, KS, with two children: Cynthia, born 1856 and William D., born about 1858. I also have a baptismal record from Oct 1860 for a son named John. They were living in Bates County, MO when the 1870 census was taken, with Cynthia and William, as well as Kate, born about 1863, and Mathew, born about 1865. John was not mentioned. I can find nothing further about the parents until 1891, when the author of "Annals of Platte County" mentioned that Kissiah was a widow living in Bates County. I have always assumed she was living with my ggrandmother, Cynthia Johnston Biser in Hume, MO but I cannot yet substantiate this. Kissiah may have been known as "Rosa". If anyone here sounds familiar, please e-mail me. Thanks!

In the 1850s he was Captain in the FL Mounted Volunteers in the last Indian War in FL, was a stock raiser during the civil war, and was a county judge in mid-FL afterward. Keep up your research. Hello. I am new to the list, and would like to introduce my Johnston line. William R. Johnston was my gggrandfather, born in either Ireland or Liverpool sometime around 1797 to 1800. It is not known when he emigrated to the US, or what was his port of entry. The first document we have encountered for him is a marriage record from Platte County, Missouri dated Nov 1853. He married a girl named Kissiah Hornback, born about 1828 in Bourbon County, KY. It is possible that Kissiah was actually known as "Rosa". They had several children: Cynthia Ann, known as "Anna", born 1856 in Bates County, MO; William, born about 1858, also in MO; John, born in 1860 in McGee County, Cherokee Neutral Land, Kansas; Kate, born about 1863 in MO; and Mathew, born about 1865, birthplace illegible. I believe John died at a tender age, as he is not listed with the family in the 1870 census. According to a story passed along to my second cousin by one of Cynthia Johnston's daughters, William R. Johnston fought for the Union during the Civil War. Now, he would have been well into his 60s during that conflict. I am currently trying to determine if he served in any of the Kansas regiments. We are fairly certain he did not serve in any of the Missouri outfits. I can't discount the possibility that he may actually have fought in the Mexican War, and my cousin's grandmother had the story turned around. I still have no idea when or where he died or was buried. The only lead I have is an obscure reference to Kissiah Hornback Johnston as a widow living in Bates County, MO in 1891. Families connected to this line, besides Hornback, are Biser, Stumph, and Branum. If any of this seems even remotely familiar, please contact me. This is a very thick brick wall that my cousin and I have been trying to topple for quite some time. Thank you! Jacqueline Watkins
