Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=264 Surname: Laird, Law, Johnston ------------------------- David Laird was born around 1780-1785 in or near Huntingdon Pennsylvania USA, to Jacob Laird and Jane Johnston. He married Ann Law at the Huntingdon Presbyterian Church about 1804-1806. There were several children, including Rebecca Laird (born 22 March 1810) and Lydia Laird. They lived either at Huntingdon or Erie for a few years, then between 1812 and 1820, they left Pennsylvania. In 1830, they turned up on the census for Troy, Lincoln county, MO. We lost David after that. Rebecca married Elijah Galloway 7 or 12 Dec 1828 in Lincoln county MO, and they lived there until 1858 when they moved to TX with all their 13 children and their families. After the Civil War, they went to Carroll County Arkansas. If you can trace your LAIRD ancestry back to Lincoln county MO, or to Erie or Huntingdon PA, I would like to hear from you.
Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=263 Surname: Akers, Steele, King, Laird ------------------------- Geo W. Akers was born in Putnam County, Ind. about 1838. He married his wife Margaret Matilda (Maggie) Steele when she was 16, around 1858-60, and they came to Paola, Kansas about 1863 where his younger brother Thomas worked. George's father was Thomas Akers. George died at Stafford, KS in 1924, after a colorful career which included teacher, minister, pharmacist, doctor, merchant, and newspaper owner. The oldest son of George was Larkin Neanian Akers, named for a grandfather or great grandfather through the Steele family. He married Ida Louetta King in 1882, at Little River, Kansas. 'Lou' was a daughter of Abigail Belcher Spear King, widowed of (Daniel?) King of Orange, Mass about 1875. They had 3 daughters, Stella (married to J. A. Cravens), Clara (married to Earl Fickertt), and Margaret (married to Otis Zenor).
Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=262 Surname: Laird, Johnson, Carlson, Peterson, Johnsson, Carlsson, Petersson ------------------------- Anna Carlson/Carlsdotter was born in Moltorp Sweden about 1850, married Gustaf Johnsson about 1868-1870, had a son Carl Oskar in 1871 in Sweden. Gustaf came to USA in 1871, settled in Osage County, Kansas, and Anna & Carl came in 1873. There were 4 more children, the last born in 1882. Gustaf died before the last was born, apparently of heart trouble or a stroke. She married August Petersson later in 1882, and my grandmother was born in 1885. August was from Brevik, Sweden, born around 1857. We believe he came with his mother (Christina?) and a sister (Helen?).
Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=261 Surname: Petersson, Peterson, Johnson, Johnsson, Carlsson, Laird ------------------------- August Petersson or Peterson was born in or near Brevik, Sweden in 1857. He came to America in the late 1870's or very early 1880's, possibly with his mother and sister, and settled at Osage County, Kansas. He was married in 1882 to Anna Carlsson or Carlsdotter Johnson, a widow with five children. Her first husband was Gustaf Johnsson or Johnson, and the first child of that marriage was Carl Oskar (Charles Oscar later). They were all from Moltorp, Sweden. She was born around 1850, I believe, and her father was said to be a sea captain. Gustaf Johnson died around 1882, before the last of the five children was born. According to immigration records, Gustaf came over in 1871, and Anna and Carl came over in 1873. The other four children were Ida Sophia, Frank, Victor, and Gustaf, born between 1873 and 1882.
Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=260 Surname: Laird, Johnston, Lapsley, Russell, Martin, Petersson, Cravens, Akers, Steele ------------------------- I have been, along with several other individuals, working on the genealogy for the Laird family, as descended from Jacob Laird and Jane Johnston, off and on for several years, and would like to ask for a little help in locating information on Jacob and Jane themselves. It appears that we have hit the proverbial brick wall. Jacob and Jane were married, probably, around 1775 to 1776. It seems likely that they married, if not in Huntingdon, PA, then close by. Huntingdon is where they lived for several years, and is where they died in 1791 and 1796, respectively. Jane's father, we think, was Thomas "The Elder" Johnston, and she had 2 brothers that we know of, William and Thomas Johnston. Jacob was a 1st Lt. in the Bedford County, PA, militia during the Rev. War. With Jacob, there is the apparently typical "three brothers" legend - one went south, one went to Indiana, and one stayed put - which I have seen at least 2 or 3 times during the course of researching the family. It adds a little interest to the search. There were seven children of Jacob and Jane Johnston Laird: 1) William (born around 1778) who was married twice at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church (1-Ann Drennan, 2-Elizabeth Alexander) and had fifteen children (7 with one wife, 8 with the other). William remained in area of Huntingdon, married 1st wife c.1799, married 2nd wife c.1825; 2) Thomas (born around 1779?) who was married to Mary Ann Lapsley at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, had eleven children and ran a tavern or hotel business in Erie; 3) David (born around 1780-1781) who was married to Ann Law at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, had at least 2 children (Rebecca and Lydia), left Huntingdon between 1812 and 1820, showed up on the Missouri census for Troy, Lincoln county in 1830, then disappeared; 4) Johnston (born about 1785) who married Elizabeth Raynolds in Canton, Ohio; 5) Sarah married Samuel Hemphill at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, moved to Canton, Ohio; 6) Anne married Thomas Hemphill (brother to Samuel) at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, moved to Canton, Ohio; 7) Margaret (born in Dec 1791) married John Saxton at Huntingdon Presbyterian Church, moved to Canton, OH. Jacob Laird died intestate, "seized in his demense" on or about 1 Oct 1791. All of his children were under the age of 14 at the time of his death, and the youngest was born after he died. The mother, Jane, waived her rights as guardian, and Jane's brothers were named the official Guardians for the minor children. Jane died around the spring of 1796. William inherited his father's holdings (or bought out the interests of his siblings with the support of the Huntingdon Orphan's Court). There appeared to be a lot of fighting between the siblings recorded by the Orphan's Court between 1791 and 1815, and this may be the reason David Laird left the area with his family. I would like to find out if anyone knows where Jacob and Jane might be buried, and who (and from where) Jacob's and Jane's parents were. So far as I've been able to determine, they haven't been located in the Huntingdon area, so I assume their remains were transported to wherever Jacob's parents or Jane's parents lived. We are also seeking additional descendants (those we haven't found yet) of Jacob and Jane Johnston Laird. I am most particularly interested in Thomas' descendants (my direct ancestor) and the fate of David Laird (who went more or less missing after 1812) and his descendants. We have found one daughter, Rebecca, who married Elijah Galloway, but I would LOVE to learn more about David, Ann, and others of their children. Thank you - Claudia Laird

W.J. studied medicine in Wheeling, VA under a Dr. Mowry. He married Mary Ann Thompson in Ohio (1838) and practised medicine in Pickaway County, Ohio. In 1848 the family moved to Iowa eventually settling in Shelby County, IA. Any information about Dr. W.J. Posted on: Johnston Queries Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston?read=251 Surname: Johnston, Acock, Duck ------------------------- My great-grandmother, Azalea Johnston, was born on a farm near Sardis in Henderson County, TN. Her father's name was William Johnston and her mother was Artlissa Acock. William died around 1873 and Artlissa died in 1887. There is supposedly a relationship with Albert Sydney Johnston,a Civil War General. Any help finding more on this family would be very appreciated.
"Hello again Cousins!" Sticking my neck out on this one, so if any of you can shoot this theory down, PLEASE do so! Might any of you happen to know who Sarah JOHNSTON, b abt 1747, MA, dau. of Daniel and Susannah (BIXBY) JOHNSTON of Essex Co., MA, might have married? Or know whether either Daniel JOHNSON or his wife, Susannah BIXBY, may have left wills or probate records? Or as I have found previously in other situations, might anyone have a death record for Sarah that would preclude her as having been the wife of Deacon Ebezezer GRAY of Pelham, MA? As Deacon Ebenezer GRAY and his wife Sarah JOHNSTON of Pelham, MA, did name their only "known to me" son, Daniel Johnston GRAY, I am inclined to think that I'm on the right track. Ebenezer and Sarah were married 12 Feb 1767, Pelham, MA, or at least there is a recorded marriage record for them there. Might there also be one in Haverill, MA, where Daniel and Susannah (BIXBY) GRAY are believed to have resided, as I have found more than one marriage in MA doubly recorded, once where the bride's family lived, and again where the groom's family lived, if both not from the same community. I believe extra weight may be added to this budding theory due to the dau., Sarah JOHNSTON, of Daniel and Susannah (BIXBY) JOHNSTON, also having had a sister named Lydia. This, since I am working to try to establish the ancestry of Lydia Queen GRAY, who m. Aaron GOULD, 1781, in Pelham, MA, I do find to be somewhat enticing to my curiosity to say the least! Might anyone know as to whether Daniel JOHNSTON, who reportedly d 8 Mar 1794, Haverill, Essex Co., MA, might have left a will or other probate record naming his surviving children, or might his wife have done so, as she reportedly died 16 Jan 1779, also in Haverill? I am wondering if Sarah JOHNSTON, wife of Ebenezer GRAY, may have had a bequest left to her or her, existing heirs, and due to that fact, Deacon Ebenezer failed to include dau. Lydia Queen GRAY's name in his will? So many questions and so few answers at this time, especially for this northwest Missouri resident whose family has so many New England ancestors still to be identified. Any and all help and assistance on this one will be most appreciated! I believe all the descendant researchers who are working on the family and descendants of Aaron and Lydia Queen (GRAY) GOULD of WV, will accord anyone who helps to break through this impasse on the ancestry of Lydia, with respect and admiration, as I surely will, as we have been stymied on this question for well over a century now, in so far as I am aware! Thank you so very much "Cousins!" for either helping to establish any of this to be fact , or in showing it to be total fancy, regardless of the outcome! TTYL Craig "Always looking for Cousins!"
Looking for verification and validation on my wife's grandparents. Jesse was born August 3, 1854 in Ontario as far as we know. He married April 22, 1876 to Mary Elizabeth Williams, b. June 7, 1857. Their first three children were born in Fergus, Wellington County, Ontario. Mary Elizabeth on March 2, 1877. Samuel and William (twins) on September 29, 1878. The family later moved to Sanitec, Michigan, Doland, South Dakota, and Raymond, South Dakota. Can anyone help to identify Grandfather Jesse and Grandmother Mary Elizabeth?
