    3. Beth: My husband's ggrandfather (William Henry JOHNSTON) b. May 24, 1848 in OH. He came to MI prior to 1880 and then moved to OR abt. 1908, following the lumber. William's wife, Mary Jane MC GILVORY, and 7 of his 9 children accompanied him (Henry, Matthew, Rosie, Maggie, Mary, William, and Barney). They settled around the Portland area. Two sons, Andrew Bradford and Arthur E., remained in MI. William Henry died in OR in 1922. Mary Jane died in OR in 1920. Do any of these names sound familiar? This group is my brick wall and I'd sure appreciate any help at chipping away on it. Do you have access to the 1910 and 1920 census for OR? My GGGGrandfather was Lewis Matthew Gregory Johnston, born (somewhere!) in England approx. 1800. He married in Edinburgh and spent the rest of his life in Edinburgh and Lanark, Scotland. He was a master Sword Fencer and had numerous acadamies where he taught fencing, gymnastices and callisthenics. He also taught sword & blade handling to the military and cavalry. Quite a guy. He died in Lanark 1874. His parents were Henry Erskine Johnston and Nannette Parker, both actors who appeared in all the major cities of England, Scotland, Ireland and Henry also acted in New York in the early 1800's. Unfortunately, I can't see how any of this will help you with your James Lewis Johnston, but we genealogists can't seem to help ourselves clutching at straws. Good luck with your research, Dornie in cold and windy Melbourne, Australia.

    2. kenneth edmundson
    3. I am attempting my first at posting to this list. Have been reading all those posted by others. None of them fit the family that I am looking for. Minnie Lucinda Johnston was born June 14, 1890 in WI. Not sure of the birthplace yet. We do know that her father was Peter James Johnston and her mother was Elizabeth Beardsley. Have heard stories that Elizabeth was married to brothers first Nathan and then Peter. He was supposed to have been killed in a railroad accident in about 1904. Can not find them in any records here. Am now attempting to locate them in Monroe County, WI. If any one could give me anymore information it would certainly be appreciated. Want it for my mother who is 87 years old. Minnie did have siblings who were Sarah, Nancy, Cora, John, George, Susan and possibly others. Mom knows very little about her mothers family. Hope that someone can help us track them down. Minnies birth date is the only one that I have right now. Thanks Nancy
