I am looking for J. (possibly James) Lemuel Johnston. He was born in Mississippi to UNK Johnston and mother named Manerva (?). He was listed on the Lamar Co., TX census of 1880, living with his mother Manerva Roche and half-siblings name Roche. He was 19 at the time. There is a marriage record for J.L. Johnson (Johnston) and Molly Harlow in Lamar Co., in 1886. My grandmother was born Clara M. Johnston in 1887, her brother Alvin Banks Johnston was born in 1888. Some of Molly Harlow Johnston's family migrated to Tahlequah, then on to Skiatook, I.T. While in the library, I stumbled onto a book that listed an 1890 census index of people living under permit in the Cooweescoowee District of I.T. In it was a James Johnston, age 29, with 4 people in the household. This sounds like my man, but I haven't had time to get back to the library and check in to it more throughly. If anyone has heard of ANY of these people I have listed in this post, please contact me. Molly died between 1890-1900 for unknown reason. Lemuel was murdered for his watch by a man that was lynched shortly thereafter. That is the family story, but I would really like to be able to confirm some of this. I'm sorry for such a long posting. Louise Fields Cosar ________________________________________________________________ YOU'RE PAYING TOO MUCH FOR THE INTERNET! Juno now offers FREE Internet Access! Does Rootsweb have a "list" for St. Andrews or Anstruther Easter Burghs? Thank you. Eleanor Lee
Is anyone familiar with the following Johnston Family. Andrew Johnston's home was located in Rennyhill, formally the possession of the Lumsdens or Lumsdaines of Innergellie. It is in the same location as the Minister's Manse. I would very much like to contact via the internet any source whom may have information regarding Renny Hill (historical associations, churchs, etc.) and the following family. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions. :-) Andrew Johnston, b. 1803, married in 1834, died in 1862 (named after his Father) B.G.W.'s Mother's Father (previous information from a penciled note) Johnston Andrew, younger, of Renny Hill -MP for Anstruther Easter Burghs (now St. Andrews) , 1831-2; St. Andrews Burghs, 1833-4, 1835-7; -Of Holton Halesworth, Sussex. Sold Renny Hill, 1853 -The son of Andrew Johnston. Died 24.8.1862 having married (1) Barbara daughter of C Pearson Of Edinburgh in 1827; and (2) Priscilla daughter of Sir -Thomas Fowell Buxton, Bart MP on 18.6.1852. Of their children a son, Andrew, was MP for Essex 1868-1874. Thank you so very much for any help or suggestions. :-) Eleanor Lee
I recently purchased a book on ebay, "The Gentle Johnstons and their kin" by Henry Poellnitz Johnston, 1966. It also includes the families: Bond, Mason, Wilson, Freeman, Doherty, Mulholland, Weissinger. It seems to be very much centered on NORTH CAROLINA. Dates range from the mid-1700s up to the mid-1900s. This is a large (11 1/4" x 9") impressive work with 550 pages. Indexed! It is in fairly good condition. The inside edge of the back cover is dirty/mildew-y. The edges of the pages have "foxing"/dirt and it smells musty. Four pages have about an inch-long tear at the bottom, not extending into the text. Overall it looks pretty good. I'm asking the price I paid for it: $47.11. With shipping ($4.25), let's say an even $50. I will only accept a money order, not a personal check. If you are interested, please contact me directly. ***DO NOT POST TO THE LIST*** The book begins with a history of the Johnstons in Scotland including those listed in the peerages. The bulk of it is an extensive North Carolina history of this particular Johnston family, including wills, deeds, etc. This is a very impressive work! George Johnston and Mary Wilson who came to Pennsylvania early 1700s. Children: John, Charles, E., George. Charles married Martha Blackwood ca 1754 North Carolina Charles' son, George, married Mary Mulhollan 1793 North Carolina. also, Descendants of: Catherine Johnston and John Feeland Martha (Patsy) Johnston and Gray Huckabee Charles Wilson Johnston II and Lydia Cabe George Mulholland Johnston and Eliza Mary Bond. Thomas Mulholland Johnston and Eliza Ann Moore. Mary Jane(Polly) Johnston and William Duskin. Sara Bowman Johnston and James Sloan. Mary Johnston and Samuel Craig. William Craig and Sarah Woods. Elizabeth Johnston and John Strayhorn. Martha Johnston and Matthew McCauley. George Johnston and Jane Thompson. James Johnston II and Nancy Faucette. Johns Johnston and Charity Tate. Jane Johnston and Robert Thompson. Tabitha Wilson and William Freeman. Frances Wilson Doherty and William Bond. Eliza Mary Bond and Leonard Anderson Weissinger. Thomas Burke Bond and Eliza H.A. Thomason. Thomas Burke Bond and Barbara Ann McLemore. Thomas Mulholland and Martha Mumford. William Craig and Mrs. Long. I'm sure I probably missed somebody, so email me if you want me to look for a name. Sorry, but I don't have the time to give a full run down on anybody's descendants. Thank you for reading all of this! Marcy Hoover [email protected]
