WOW...can anyone tell me how to get a copy of the Will for George Johnston who's wife is Margaret? Do I need to write? Is the actual copy of the Will listed in a book I can get? Does anyone on the list have this Will, that wants to share? I know I can go there and get it myself...which I just might do...<smile> I'm so excited. I really had not too much to go on until I read this email. I knew his name, wife, etc... My husband comes off his son David who's listed as dead. David died only 3 days before his father wrote his Will (19 Sept. 1796). It looks like that was his wake up call to get his things in order. I'm also excited now because I now have many more names to dig with. I have a Web page that shows all the Johnston's and the information I have to date. If any one's interested here's the address. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=leeanngriffin I received most of the information from Dee March who went to IN years ago (That's where some of the Johnston's went after Frederick, VA.) and also from picking up pieces here and there. IF anyone fits in this family, I'd love to trade information. Most of what I have is from searching for our Griffin's. I'd love to know more about this Johnston family. Also David Johnston married Elizabeth Kyle, one of their children is Nancy Johnston who received $300.00 from PRES George Washington's estate when he died. It's said that the relationship was off the Kyle family to the Pres...BUT no one has ever found the connection. I guess my question is, has any one on the Johnston's side of the family, ever heard such a story. I do know that these Johnston's were linked to Lord Fairfax along with my Griffin's. Lord Fairfax was under Pres. Washington during those years. Hoping to hear from anyone...even just one person would help!....<smile> Happy Hunting Lee Ann Griffin ----- Original Message ----- From: Elsetta Alexander Torres <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, September 02, 2000 12:42 PM Subject: [JOHNSTON] Abstract of will of George Johnston- Frederick Co, Va. > Posted on: Johnston Wills

Posted on: Johnston Wills Reply Here: http://genconnect.rootsweb.com/gc/surnames/joh/JohnstonWill/9 Surname: Johnston, Chaffin, Massey, McCarty, Harrison, Ramsey, Lewis, Adam ------------------------- This is an abstract of the genealogical information on the will of George Johnston. he was of Fairfax County, Virginia. He had lots in the town of Alexandria and a tract at Hales (or Kales) in Frederick. Mentions wife Sarah, all his sons and daughters, son George, daughter Peggy Chaffin ( Her disobedience caused her to be excluded) daughter Mary Massey. Mentions that his wife was big with child at the time the will was drawn up. Executors were wife, son George, and friends Daniel McCarty and Lee Massey. Will drawn on 23 february 1766. Witnesses Robert Harrison, Ann Ramsey, John Lewis There was a Codicil on 23 March 1766 It reads: I have within divised to my daughter Mrs, Massey, an equal part of my estate. I revoke this and give her only half a share so also to all my children. I have divised an equal distribution but upon considering this, it appears to be unjust as my sons George and William have lands and slaves devised to them by their uncle Denis McCarty to keep which estate together have paid large sums of money of which I have kept an imperfect account or rather none. I so therefore devise to the said George and William but half a share of my estate. signed G. Johnston There is also a paper on the Court held for Fairfax Co on 19th Jan. 1767. The will was presented in court by Sarah Johnston and George Johnston. It was proved by the oath of Harrison and Ann Ramsey. Robert Harrison, Daniel McCarty and Robert Adam stated that the will and codicil were in the proper hand writing of the deceased.

Posted on: Johnston Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston/287 Surname: JOHNSTON, WINE, ALKIRE, BUSH, WOLF, McCANN ------------------------- My great grandmother was MARGARET ANNE JOHNSTON, daughter of Fielden/an "Fields" JOHNSTON and NANCY WINE. They were from the Weston, Lewis County, WV area. MARGARET ANNE JOHNSTON was born 3/19/1856, died 2/8/1934 in Weston. She married JAMES NEWTON BUTCHER, JR on 5/11/1876 in Weston. MARGARET surely had siblings but I have found absolutely nothing on them. Thankfully, I have pictures of Margaret and James and their 14 children, whom I remember well as my great aunts and uncles in Akron,Ohio, where they all eventually migrated to. Anyone out there recognize this JOHNSTON clan from Lewis County,WV??? Thanks! Claudia Pell-Salvatore
Hi Bob over there in N.Z Thanks for your reply, I have just received from a list contact in Ireland a small book called "The annals of the Parish of Derrykeighan" and via the Uni in Belfast, "Ordinance Survey of County Antrim 1830-5 & 1837-8. They make interesting reading of the reading of the times and the political geography etc'. I really wish I could find my GG Grandfathers infromation on his leaving there, but apart from anecdotal information from those long gone I have now assumed they went to the U.S, his peers, that is, and forsome reason, he then arrived in Australia, into the goldfields of western Victoria (Ballarat etc'). Thats all I know of him, so i wa s hoping there may be a link out there in cyber-Genie-Land. I also realise that Johnston was as common a surname as Smith, so the quest becomes more heavy. Bob I'd be rapt if you wouldnt mind looking though, and certainly I'll do the same here for KANE, in these "Un-Indexed" books too ??!!. Don & Others; I joined this list because of a rather speculative interest in JOHNSTONs in North Antrim. Your posting, Don, is the first I've seen referring to the area on this list. I have no knowledge of the people you mention but do have an unindexed book of the history of Derrykeighan Parish. If you wish I can look through it for reference to Johnston. I grew up in the neighbouring parish (Billy) and have been through Derrykeighan many times. My own interest in Johnstons arises from the fact that one of the sons of my greatgrandfather, Daniel Kane, was named Johnston Kane. This, according to other naming-patterns in the family, could indicate that his paternal grandmother's maiden name was Ann (or Elizabeth) Johnston. There were quite a lot of Johnstons in various townlands in Billy parish. Bob Wellington. I'm trying to seek information regarding JOHNSTON, Charles H. who lived in Willows, California from approximately 1931 to 1935. I believe he was married with two children (daughters??). I'm not aware of his spouse or children's names. Nor am I aware of where he lived before Willows, California of thereafter. The only information I do know is he lived at 219 S. Culver; Willows, CA and then at 457 W. Vine; Willows, CA. I found this information at the California State Library in the Glenn & Tehama Counties Telephone Directories. Unfortunately, their telephone directories did not list spouse's names or occupations like other towns directories I've seen. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
