Posted on: Johnston Queries Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/surnames/joh/Johnston/419 Surname: Johnston, Robinson, Campbell ------------------------- I posted a message earlier, but have further info now that will help track this ancestor. I am trying to track down my ggg-grandfather to Armstrong Co. (then Sugar Creek twp.) and beyond in PA. His Scots-Irish father (unknown Johnston) is reported to have had at least one son (named Thomas) while still in Ireland and then to have had a son named John (my ggg-grandfather) somewhere in PA. The first written record I have of John is in the 1800 census which finds him in eastern Armstrong country PA living next to an Alexander Campbell and a Samuel Robinson. Alexander Campbell is an apparent friend who moves together with the John Johnston family to Trumbull Co. OH around 1811. The neighbor Samuel Robinson is likely to be an in-law relative since John marries a Margaret Robinson while in PA. The family has six living children after then move to OH and then two additional children after settling in Milton OH. John's brother Thomas moves to Portage Co. OH around 1808 nearby, fights in the War of 1812 and starts a branch of Johnstons in that county of OH. In 1810 just prior to moving to OH John Johnston is found in the census to be living next to a David Johnston Esq., who goes on to be a well-known clergyman in Kittanning, Armstrong Co. PA. This David Johnston Esq. is likely to a another son of the unknown Johnston father who came over from Ireland. Both David and John were apparently well educated for the time, since David becomes a minister and John teaches school briefly after moving to OH and becomes a justice of the peace for a while in Trumbull Co. OH. The John Johnston family in Trumbull-Mahoning counties OH form a large branch which I estimate has 100s of living Johnston descendants now. John died in Milton, Trumbull Co. OH in 1842. Where did our branch of Johnstons come from? If you can fill in the picture, please post a message and write to me directly. Thanks! --- Steve Johnston [email protected]
