If his birthday was after June in 1850, you stand a chance of finding him in the 1850 Census. Don't ever believe what these Daddies say. Ask the mothers about birthdays and birthplaces. I have several John C. Johnstons in the Clan Johnston file (Rollodex), but no John Calhoun or even one born in 1850. As I cintinue to get more charts every week, I might have him and don't know it yet; so keep in touch. What other SC families was he kin to? Beverly Shuler

I am searching for my maternal grgrandfather,William Hemphill Johnston or possibly his given name was Joseph William.Sources report that in 1869,grgrand.was married to Emmaline Nix,and living in San Marcos (Hays County)Texas. In 1872,Emmaline died after giving birth to twins (one of whom was my maternal grandfather(Andrew Hemphill Johnston). After Emmaline's death,Andrew and siblings were brought to Texarkana (Bowie County ) Texas where they were raised by Emmaline's sister Caldonia "Callie" Nix (about to be married to Big Will Russell.I do not know what became of grgrandfather, nor do I know where Emmaline was buried after her death in 1872.My Grandfather ,(Andrew Hemphill Johnston)died in 1936 in Texarkana and is buried in the Northwood Chapel Cemetery in Pleasant Grove (Bowie County)Tx.Emmaline was believed to have been born in S.C.in circa 1844 and may have a given name of Martha,i.e.I am not certain that Emmaline was her first or given name.Nothing in Hays County records that I can find give any clues as to what became of Grgrandfather or where grgrandmother was buried.Grandfather married Martha Emma Shipp.any help would be appreciated in solving the mystery.Thanks.

Hello, I'm trying to find information about my GGrandfather (not much is known about him). His name is JOSEPH JOHNSTON (middle name could be ADAM) born approx imately 1826 - 27 information differs on where he was born but we have Wayalt County Fermanagh or Enniskillen County Fermanagh, Ireland. He is believed to have fought with the British forces in the Crimean War which would put his age at approximately 28 or 29 years. Do not know how he arrived in New Zealand, whether through Australia or straight to New Zealand. But when he was in New Zealand he married my GGrandmother CATHERINE REBECCA ARMSTRONG (married 1871) who was also from Ireland (County Tyrone). We dont have much to go on but he died in 1922 Greymouth New Zealand. Any information would be greatly appreciated Rose New Zealand
Capt. William Johnston served in the First Virginia Regiment.

Hello to everyone on this JOHNSTON surname list! I am new to this list and just want to introduce myself and to let you all know what little I have in info as I just started searching my family geneology. Unfortunately, both my maternal side and paternal side are sketchy at best. I am just starting out but have a huge ancestory from Clarion County and nearby areas in PA. My parents both moved to Western NY upon marriage but 99.99% of all my relatives come from PA (Clarion County area). So I would appreciate any info that can help (especially from a distance). The family names are listed below my signature...I am really interested in the surname ethnicity of the surnames as well, since they are really not overly obvious. Thanks for this great list. Some of the towns in PA that I've heard mention that some of my relatives/ancestors did or do reside in include.... Distant New Bethlehem Mayport Frogtown Shippenville Rimersberg East Brady Hawthorn Kittanning ~The Johnston in my lineage is my maternal Grandfather [dec.], Lloyd Earl Johnston who resided in Distant PA. He was married to Bertha Courson (Corson?) [dec.] Their children include: Betty Ann Johnston (marr. Hilton "Spud" Smith [dec.]) Dorothy Jean Johnston (marr. James "Bo" Copenhaver), Norma Jane Johnston (marr. Isaac Schrecengost) James Earl Johnston [dec.] (married Patricia Hornberger), Judy Mae Johnston (married Donald George), ~They also had 2 infant sons that were stillborn and Lloyd Earl Johnston has a son from another relationship....whose given name may be Early Troup(e) of PA. Lloyd Earl Johnston's only sibling that I have a name for is... Roscoe Johnston [dec] (married to my grandmother's sister Ida Mae Courson {Corson ?} [dec]) Lloyd Earl Johnston was born in 1908 and died in 1966 in his sleep of heart failure. My mother believes that though he grew up and resided in PA (residing in Distant, New Bethlehem area of PA), that he may have been born in Indiana ! We have not yet come up with his parents names since both he and his brother died fairly young. That leaves us off at my generation and newer and that is pretty much all I have so far on the Johnston line. But I am anxious to learn more. I am come across info that Johnston is of Scottish or Irish heritage, but from that side of the family, there was told of Irish heritage, but not Scottish! Thanks again for any help! Have a great day! Thanks, Karen ~Searching Family Tree With Names... Johnston, Downing, Courson (Corson), George, Chestnut, Sherman, Young ~Many reside(d) in & around Clarion County, PA ~My alleged ancestral nationalities include: Irish,German,Dutch,Swedish,Scottish (but as of yet, know one can say to what surnames these pertain)
