    3. Kristen- I'm sorry you are having a problem with the Past Portal web site. When you go to the web site click on "Search the Digital Archive". That will bring up another window where you will click on "Browse". That will present another window where you will click on "Virginia GAZETTE".That will present the alphabet A thru Z in square boxes. Click on the alphabet letter for the name you are searching for. That will bring up another window with subdivisions of the letter. For instance if you were searching for JOHNSON, click on the J. That brings up a window with: Jails-James, Jameson-Jenings, Johnson-Jointers, etc. Click on the Johnson-Jointers title. Then you would scroll down the list in search of your Johnson, if that person is there. I hope these instructions are helpful & don't sound too complicated. They really are not, but if you still have a problem let me know. 3. Fantastic website for me. Just started and already finding many curious and interesting possibilities. Been researching for over thirty years and even though the internet genealogy gets a lot of bad raps and has a lot of personal research that is inaccurate, sites like this make it just amazing. To be able to read these old papers at my leasure in my own home is fabulous. Thanks for sharing this. Hope you don't mind but have to share this link with some of the other family lists I am on. 2. Hi Lists: Just wanted to give this one more crack for the year; before I put things aside for the holidays. I am eagerly seeking any information on the following JOHNSON/JOHNSTON family. This is my biggest brick wall EVER. David Johnston (Johnson) was born about 1788 in Georgia. He moved to Plaquemines Parish, LA by 1840. In 1840, he married Hannah Frederika Hoffman. They had one son named Alexander Henry Johnston (Johnson). David died in 1852 at the age of 64. After David’s death, I loose track of them until 1863, when Alexander reappears registering for the Civil War in Orleans Parish, LA. Also, at some point Hannah remarries ___??___Weisheimer. Alexander married Magdalena Sherwood/Keisel in July 1863. Certain records show her as Magdalena Sherwood and others as Magdalena Keisel. Could someone tell me perhaps why different records have different names when they don’t even sound alike? -- Thanks a bunch, Tami Johnston-Parise New Orleans, LA Researching: JOHNSTON/HOFFMANN/STEINDBINDER/WEISHEIMER/SPROUL/ KEISEL/SHERWOOD/HOERNER/ZWEIFEL/DOCLAR/USNER/ FERNANDEZ/MCDERMOTT

    3. This JOHNSTON list does not include the topic of DNA research. Rootsweb does have specific criteria for DNA lists that are slightly different from regular lists. There is also a Rootsweb message board for DNA research posts. If someone wants to start a JOHNSTON list for DNA discussion, feel free to request one from Rootsweb. However, the topic will not be discussed on this list. Please reply to the people who posted on this topic through private email, not on the list. Regards, Sharyn Hay JOHNSTON Administrator

The bereaved daughters, Miss Campbell and Miss Edith with whom he spent his last few weeks on earth, have our sincere sympathy in their great affliction. There was a large assemblage of people at the corner of Duke and Orange Streets, Mr. Johnson’s point of observation and through a horse becoming scared there was a rush of the crowd. Mr. Johnson fell, was trampled and received internal injuries. This was the last of the reportorial work done by him. He was confined to the house for several weeks by reason of the accident, and when able to be about he went to his daughter’s for a brief visit. He hoped to be back again in a few weeks restored to health, but Providence deemed otherwise. Mr. Johnson enjoyed a large acquaintance in city and county. 3. Hello! As a matter of fact, the Johnstons were friends of Patrick Henry. The third wife of William Johnston m. Ann Chew, Betty Wyatt Coleman, had a son named Francis Coleman who was closely associated with Patrick Henry not only a friend but a follower of his. Betty, his mother, later Johnston, was said to have made a flag for the new nation to be later called USA, but it was only used in Caroline Co., as far as I know. Beverly Shuler
