Pam, Have you checked the Salt Lake City The Jesus Christ Latter Day Saints--The FamilySearch Internet Service? There is a Benjamin H. Johnston listed there from that county. It lists Benjamin and John. It also gives their wives names. I don't remember whether I found it in 1870 or 1880. I didn't try for Andrew though. This might be of some help. Just try www.familysearch.org. Sandy
Yes, I would agree that one should verify information on a death certificate. I live in California and my Father died in Indiana. My nephew gave the information for the certificate and I was horrified to see (when I sent for a copy) that every item on it - first, middle, and surname, place of birth, date of birth, county of residence (he'd lived in that county for 95 years) and also the spellings of the names of two of my sisters. I assume the date of death might have been correct. Also my husband's information on his death certificate was nearly all wrong and I had given it to the official myself. It was the official who had written it incorrectly. From those two incidences I would say to beware of any information that is written - that it probably is incorrect. In those two cases I certainly knew the correct spellings, dates, and locations. In most others, one would not. Good luck. J eanne

Dear Pam, always trust the death certificate first. Someone close to the decedent gave the information to the coroner for the death certificate or the family doctor filled out the death certificate. I would say that you are on safe ground with Benjamin being the father. What is Benjamin's age at the 1870 Census? Go back to the 1860 Census and see who is in the household of Benjamin and John A. Benjamin's wife may have been living in 1860 or 1870. I would also check the 1850 Census. You should also check wills and probates for Benjamin and John A. Do you know when they died? I wish it were that easy...on the 1870 census Andrew is listed in the household of John A. with no relationship listed and with Benjamin (who is blind) living next door. On Andrew's death certificate it lists father's name as Benjamin--no mother's name. John A. is age 70 at time of 1870 census--with no wife. Can you see why I am uncertain who the "real" father is? Pat, I have viewed the pastportal site and also kept a close eye on all the post. I am curious if you saw any mention of Pittenger's (Surname) in this site. My Pittengers were in Culpepper Co., VA around 1780's. I had no luck in researching the surname at the site. Shirley- I am so happy to hear that the Past Portal web site has been helpful to you. I think that reading those newspapers from the 1700's gives us some wonderful insight into Colonial Virginia. Pam, since Andrew was born 9 Apr., 1861, wouldn't he listed in the 1870 Census of MS either in the household of John or Benjamin Johnston? The Census would indicate his relationship to the head of household. regards, doc ----- Original Message ----- From: "Pam Tyler" <mommycita@cox.net> To: <JOHNSTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, December 03, 2004 7:27 AM Subject: [JOHNSTON] Benjamin H. So sorry. My Benjamin Johnston is Benjamin F. and he is from Ohio. Sandy
Does anyone have a Jethro Johnston in their database? He married Nancy Dunlap on 19 August 1821 in Washington County, Indiana. Ira
THANKS YOU for sending us this new web site. I spent some time on it yesterday and found it to be wonderful! Found information on one ancestor dated 1777-10-17 regarding Revolutionary War service. Again, THANKS. Shirley
