    3. Janet, saw your email and thought it worth a reply to see if there is a connection with my Johnstons. My names of interest are, and unfortunately this is ALL I have; Parents; William Johnston Mary Gilmore I presume they married. Children Charles Alexander Johnston b Coatsbridge Lanark in 1855. He came out to Australia married and the information I have is off his death cer, he was my Grandfather. Mary, have no place of birth nor date for her. Do not know if there were any more children. I know a member of the Johnston family went to America but do not know which generation they belonged to. Do any of these names come up in your research??? regards desperate Desley

    3. Hi Charles, Beverly Shuler here. Just had a thought: Do you guess your Benjamin H. Johnston was named for that great leader of Georgia, Benjamin Hawkins? Benj. lived in Pulaski Co., if I'm not mistaken. He came across the river to SC several times to help Andrew Pickens fight the Cherokees. Both were in the Battle of Augusta in Rev. War. I have more on him. He was a friend of my ancestor, Maj. Samuel Taylor and Sam witnessed several treaties Ben and Andrew signed with the Cherokee Chiefs at the Pickens home. (The river runs between GA and SC, and passes thru Clemson, my birthplace and where I grew up. Hope this will help some. 3. Thanks Beverly, it helps a lot. John Smith, my grandfather (R.S.) had a son named John Taylor Smith. They migrated from Guilford County, NC with Andrew Pickens, Elijah Pugh, and several other families. I never have been able to get a handle on the Taylor family. Know anything about that group? By the way, thanks for defending my answer to Pam Johnston. I was just trying to help as you have many times. Best regards to you and your husband. doc ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beverly Shuler" <bshuler@comcast.net> To: <JOHNSTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, December 09, 2004 6:55 PM Subject: Re: [JOHNSTON] Benjamin H. 2. I have a Thomas Johnston born about 1804 in Dumfries Scotland married to Mary Atchinson. They came to the United States with two children Henry Bell or Belgium Johnston and Isabelle. Henry was born April 27,1838 in Dumfries and Isabelle after that. I know they were in the states before 1866 because Henry married Nancy C Green in Riley Co Kansas in 1866. I believe the family came in at New York some place. There is said that one child was born in New York and then two or three others born in Wi but have not been able to confirm any of this. My husband is Henry great grandson. Henry died in Riley counts Kansas and is buried in the cementry with my husbands grandfather and father and most of the families. Jannetta and Thomas are buried in the Old Bernice Cemetery of Sullivan County, Pennsylvania and I have a photo of the gravestone. I have no idea where the first two wives died or are buried. I have some information back two earlier Thomas Johnstons and two younger. Looking for any information or connections to this family would be very interesting. Bob Parmerter Largo, Florida

    3. Thereis only one Benj. J. in SC Roster ofSC Patriots in the American Rev.! William Caldwell was the only Wm. Caldwell who was a Capt. He was in 3rd. Regt. Captured at Fort Howe, GA, 1777. Served as Capt. of 3rd. Regt. after 12Feb. 1778. The WARE name is quite familiar, now, if I can only think why! (Well, I am old and its late.) 3. Raymon, William K. Johnston could definitely have been one of my relatives! This one was born in Twiggs Co., GA, and attended an academy there. His name was William Kleiber Johnston ( not sure about sp. of middle name.) He went first to Eufaula, AL, & had married Miss Morgiannah Nichols. I lose him then, and don't know if he went on to Texas or not. He was dead by his mother's will date in 1854. May have had a son named after him. Found out about him in a letter written by one of his friends at the academy. He mentions that William K. "turned out well." That's all I know about him- except that he was son of my James Johnston, Jr., Esq. first State Senator from Twiggs Co., GA, 1810-1811, and wife, Amey Lanier. 2. Patsy, Sorry. I live in GA but am connected to the Johnstons from OH. However, please be aware of the five brothers legend. I was told this when I was researching my PARKS family. There is always a legend floating around about the five brothers that came over to America. Unless you know for a fact that there were five brothers, please don't pin your hopes on it. People tell it in all sincerity, but this is not always accurate. In other times there were large families and perhaps some families did have five sons. But it has been my experience that it is mostly a legend. Sorry I don't have anymore information for you. Sandy

    3. Thank you all for your help and suggestions. This has/is really been a tall brick wall for me. The great thing about genealogy is all the nice people who are so willing to help and offer suggestions. Thanks again. :-) Pam -----Original Message----- From: Charles Flanders [mailto:CFlanders@hot.rr.com] Sent: Sunday, December 05, 2004 12:16 PM To: JOHNSTON-L@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [JOHNSTON] Benjamin H. Johnston Of course things can be erroneously submitted. However, the written primary record of the event is more trustworthy than a headstone or somebody said. Folks, I am not interested in a contest of who is wrong or right. I was offering some help for someone who was asking. If you don't want my help just say so. When someone asks for help on a generalized question that doesn't even tell what county or township is, then someone has to ask other questions to be able to provide that help. Sorry you are having a tough time with your ancestor. I have been there. doc ----- Original Message ----- From: "Beth Perry Johnston" <bpjohnston@charter.net> To: <JOHNSTON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, December 04, 2004 3:31 PM Subject: Re: [JOHNSTON] Benjamin H. 3. How true. I have James, Jr's. documents even. They still wouldn't let my grandmother join on him. They said it was impossible for his wife, Amey Lanier, to have first married a man (James) so much older than she (20 years), and then marry a man fourteen years younger than she was, Judge James Marion Kelly (See Kelly's Reports) He was once Court Reporter for Ga Supreme Ct., I think. It is true, though. I can now prove that!
