Dewey, William Johnson may be the father of my Jesse. I do not yet have a record to prove that Jesse is related to William and Jeffrey Johnson although the 1800 census of Morgan, Wilkes County NC lists them all and several other Johnsons as well. This leads me to believe they are family and an unsubstantiated separate record on Jeffrey exists until such time that I have the proof that my Jesse is related. ______________________________________________________________________ Jesse was probably born 1766 to 1770 in Surry County which later was Wilkes County. Wilkes County was formed from Surry county and the District of Washington in 1777, and was named in honor of John Wilkes, a distinguished English statesman and member of Parliament. The act was to become effective February 15, 1778. In what is now Tennessee there was local governments organized within the borders of Wilkes and later were admitted as counties to the State of Franklin but until Tennessee was organized Wilkes County was the legal division of all the territory included in the borders of the county. In 1790, North Carolina ceded her western lands which included Washington, Davidson, Hawkins, Greene, Sullivan, Sumner, and Tennessee counties, to the federal government. Between 1790 and 1796 the territory was known as Tennessee Territory, but in 1796 it became simply Tennessee, the sixteenth state in the Union. The earliest record I have of Jesse is his marriage in Green County, TN on 4 December 1798. The time period of Jesse's birth to his marriage was a period of a lot of changes in state and county formations. This fact can make for a lot of confusion on where people were located at the time. The next record I have on Jesse is the 1800, 1810, and 1820 census of Wilkes County, NC. So, what was Jesse doing in Greene County 2 years before 1800? My guess is commercial ventures. Provisions for the Tennessee area were probably bought in North Carolina and hauled over the mountains to Tennessee. Jesse and other brothers most likely made many trips back and forth. He must have met and then married Nancy on one of the trips.
