Seeking information on John and Bartholomew Johnson of Fluvanna Virginia My third great grandfather was John Johnson (designated "W" in most records to distinguish him from the six or seven other John Johnsons in Fluvanna at the time). I believed the "W" stood for some association with the Wilson family as this was indeed the designation one year in the tax records. He was born 09/08/1769 and died 01/15/1847 in Fluvanna). He was married first to Fanna on 6/18/1789 and second to Mary Johnson [Faris]. His children were: Bartholomew K Johnson b. 05/30/1791 d. 1852-1853 Kenton County, Ky married to Jane Nancy Johnson b. 06/31/1793 m. Thomas Bragg (they stayed in Fluvanna) Lucy Johnson b. 3 30/1798 m. Richardson White (relocated to Cumberland) Elizabeth Johnson b. 11/13/1800 assumed dead by 1847 Mildred Johnson b. 01/25/1804 m. David Barker (relocated to Cumberland) James K Johnson b 07/08/1806 disappears from the local record after 1847 Fanna was the mother of all the children. It seems that Mary, the second wife, was the daughter of John Johnson (designated "R" for association with Ross) She had a daughter by her first husband William Faris. After John's death she married Sadler. All except Bartholomew are known to have been married by Baptist ministers in Fluvanna The detail above was found piecemeal at the Family Search site. Evidently someone has the family Bible, given the detail of the dates, but gave no source or contact information. Bartholomew served as a fifer in the Fluvanna militia during the War of 1812. He moved to Albemarle in 1818 but is missing for about five years beginning about 1822 and returns to Albemarle where he lived until after 1834. Then he relocated to Kanawha Salines, Kanawha County, Virginia about 1838 and in 1842 relocated again to Kenton County, Kentucky, where he died about 1852. Bartholomew and Jane had: John K Johnson b 1817 m. Julia Charles A Johnson b. 1823 d. 1920 m. Emma and Letha Windsor James T Johnson b. ca 1825-1827 m. Mary Evans and Lidia A Williams William H Johnson b. ca 1828 m. Elizabeth Jeremiah Elsworth Johnson b. 1829 m. Louisiana McNabb in 1853 Susan F Johnson b. ca 1832 m. James Coleman Susan died before 1860. Martha Johnson b. 1835 m. Herman Schroder most were married and lived in Kenton, Kentucky for many years. The connection between Jeremiah and Bartholomew (BK) took eighteen years to make, as I followed the wrong river for many years. These Johnsons obviously followed the James then the New / Kanawha and then the Ohio. Jeremiah finally wound up in Memphis, Tennessee. Most of Jeremiah's siblings followed the River trade and were either clerks, pilots, captains, or other river related positions. John first appears in Fluvanna tax records about 1799 as John Jr. and by 1801 is designated "W". He obviously had established his family prior to this date so he should show up in some other Virginia county's tax records. Since most of the migration appears to be parallel to the James River, I assume that he came from one of the earlier counties. Other than the date of marriage I have yet to find a record of the marriage. John was already considered "of Fluvanna County" when he purchased his land from John Alloway Strange in October of 1800. This land was on Ross's Ferry Road near Phill's Creek (a branch of Byrd Creek) Bartholomew's missing years are a puzzle. I believe he may have been in Augusta and met his wife there. I have yet to learn her name or date of marriage. The use of the Elsworth name must be a clue but so far an elusive one. One or two other families did give that name, and they were associated with Augusta at one time or another. Elsworth became a common middle name only after the start of the Civil War. Would like to hear from any descendant. Would also appreciate any suggestions from researchers experienced in this area of Virginia, for further research, as I have "hit the wall" again.
