    3. I really dislike getting 30-40 messages at one time from one person. You don't even take the time to put the name of the person you are writing about in the subject line, so each and every e-mail has to be opened to see what you sent. I would much prefer to see you are posting about a Johnston than the Johnson I'm looking for instead of opening them all. Remember that 200 years ago, reading, writing, and spelling were no where as universal skills as today so that those who could and acted as clerks tended write down what they heard and what they heard depend on their own heritage. They were writing with expensive ink on expensive paper and they didn't have a backspace key to make corrections and since the majority of the population couldn't spell, they didn't ask, "How is that spellt?" A British ancestry clerk would have tended to put in the T that you look for, and a JP did that to my gggp Noble Johnson on his second marriage certificate though I know Noble could write very well. A Scottish or Irish clerk would have tended to leave out the T. A Norske or Svenske clerk would have tended to spell our surname Jonsson, and a Dane would have made it Johnsen or Jonssen. A German clerk would have leaned towards Janssen. I'm not sure what a Norman clerk would have done, except the records do show a Johnson was with the Norman invaders of England in 1066. All these could sound the same to the clerk. And to add complication the Scandinavians used patronymic naming until about a century ago. Remember that many Vikings moved to the English Isle in the millennia before the present one and were there to greet or fight the Romans and the Normans. I found Tony's lists long but interesting unfortunately my David didn't show up yet. Gerald J.

    3. That's the main thing, having to open every one of them to see who it's about. He should be putting the name in the subject line like every one else does. 3. Pam, when someone is generous enough to provide you with a gift of the information and their time to do this for you and others...please don't t thank them by being ungrateful and then continue to complain...I find your message insulting to Tony and you are now taking up my time by having to read your message since you put "Johnson" in the heading and I am researching that subject....so just hit the delete as I am doing on your messages.... > Date: Fri, 5 Oct 2007 15:03:34 -0700> From: katluvr@swbell.net> To: carlette@mail.com; johnson@rootsweb.com> Subject: Re: [JOHNSON] (no subject)> > That's the main thing, having to open every one of them to see who it's about. 3. Then switch to digest & you get all of those messages at once & it makes it easier to delete. Besides this is a JohnSON list......while there may be an occasional JohnsTON, its not what Tony was sharing with us. Instead of complaining (to the list), just hit delete & maybe someone will focus on your JohnsTON surname. 3. I appreciate the work Tony has done and since he notified us in advance these would be coming, there was no need to open any of them if you weren't interested. the enormous amount of information he has transcribed for list members is enough without insisting he include every name referred to in the individual posts. Thank you Tony.
