Craig, I am responding to your 3 Nov 00 query in this mail-list in which you wrote that your Jacob Lewis JOHNSTON was born about 1815 in Rutherford Co, NC as the son of Benjamin Johnston. My Benjamin Johnston lived just across the SC state border from Rutherford Co., NC in northern Greenville District, SC at the same time as your Benjamin (during 1785-1809). I have attempted without much success to collect information on the various Benjamin Johns(t)ons who lived in that region about that time. Was your Benjamin Johnston the one who owned two islands in the Broad River? Regardless, your Benjamin or mine could be the son of a Lewis Johnston of Surry and Sussex Counties, VA who died there about 1786. It appears his older son Benjamin (born there about 1750) was not living nearby at the time of death since he was not named as executor. Cousins of this family had moved to Laurens and Greenville Counties, SC before the Revolution. Please E-mail me and I will give you what I have on this. Bruce Nichols
