Ruby and all Johnston County OKlahoma was named for Douglas Hancook Cooper Johnston, the last Governor of the Chickasaw Nation whose capitol was Tishamingo. D H C Johnston was the son of (Col.) John Johnston and Mary Cheadle (3/4 quarter Chickasaw) Col. John Johnston ( b. about 1775) was the son of John Johnston and Joyce Powell of what is now Washington Co. Alabama. According to family tradition Col. Johnston "escorted" the Chickasaw to Oklahoma from Alabama. He never returned to Alabama but married Mary and stayed in OK. He died in 1865 and is buried in the Indian cemetery in Fort Washita, Johnston County, OK. His is the only marked grave in a beautiful meadow surrounded by a low rock fence. Children of Col.
