I think it was more likely the affectation of the county clerk. Some with English ancestry preferred T some with Svenske or Norske ancestry preferred SS... So the records varied. Much of the time the individuals being recorded couldn't read or write so couldn't spell or correct the clerk. I know my gggp Noble Johnson could read and write, I've seen film of documents he wrote, yet the marriage record for his 1829 marriage calls him Noble Johnston... Gerald J.
