Darlene and I and others have been corresponding about a cemetery at the New Mt. Pleasant Methodist church and about the Johnson/Johnston name in this area - I thought others might be interested in some of this : > You no doubt know there is a little spot in the road, on route 93, that is > called Mt. Pleasant., so I know some of the members, and just talked to one > couple weeks ago, and they told me nothing about a new Church. OK - but that is not a new church - Before 1818 a group had been meeting in the homes of David Johnson for Bible study and to worship God. David lived in Swan Township(now Vinton county - then Hocking county) a few miles south of the Swan/Falls (later Washington)Township line. My great-great-grandfathers Samuel Johnston and Henry Iles were trustees of the New Mt Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church when they organized in 1818 to buy land and build the first church on this New Mt. Pleasant location. This first effort was premature and the building was not actually erected until 1830. Many of my family lived in the New Mt. Pleasant, Ilesboro area and are buried in the two cemeteries associated with the Methodist church located in each hamlet. The deed transferring the land to the New Mt. Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Society was not recorded until 1939. The facts were further confused because the New Mt. Pleasant church was south of the Vinton County line - when that county was formed in 1850. Several local historians were led to believe that the Ilesboro church, founded 1842, was the first Methodist church in the southern part of Hocking County, but that is not so. Samuel and Philip Sain, in 1845, platted New Mt. Pleasant. They were no doubt influenced by the success of Henry Iles who had platted Ilesboro in 1838. This scenario is documented and discussed with several maps, in a book we gave to the Hocking County OGS chapter but who I now understand no longer have it in their holdings in the Logan Public Library. A Family History Dedicated to Amos Carr Johnston One of Our Eight Grandparents. Arthur H. Laube (Hal) and Betty Jean Clark (BJ) Laube Copyright October 1995. In two volumes. I am dismayed to recently learn that it is no longer in the Logan Library. If this is true then I wonder if our other two books are there? The Nimon Family (July 1991) Same authors. The Nimons lived in Ilesboro - about 2 miles north of New Mt. Pleasant on 93. Louis Clemens Laube 1867-1928 Selec ted Ancestors From Baldingen, Aargau, Switzerland and Darmstadt, Germany. He helped bring electricity to Ohio. ( July 1997). Same authors. The Laubes, and several of their descendants live in Logan. Earlier, cousins reported that these books were in the library, now I would very much appreciate it if someone would check again and let me know if any of these books are there. We are writing the family history of another family, Mater/Mateer, who contributed to descendants now living in Logan and in Ohio, but unless I am satisfied that these other three valuable books are to be acknowledged and safe guarded I will not give another one to the Hocking County Chapter of the OGS. The Hocking County Chapter has never acknowledged any of our three book gifts, in fact, over the years we have never been able to been able to establish any communication with any officer of that organization. I am no longer a member of the Hocking County OGS chapter because they haven't sent sent me any annual membership information for several years. Fortunately I gave another copy of the Johnston Family book to New Mt. Pleasant Methodist Episcopal church who very much appreciate it and I am sure they are taking good care of it. Also there is a copy of all of these books in OGS at Manchester, Ohio and at LDS in Salt Lake City. Regards to all Hal > Now I know where its at, and > I know where I'll be going tomorrow.
