    1. [JOHNSON] Alamo, Wales, Swedes, and my brickwall

    3. snip~~~~~~~~~~~ > Lewis JOHNSON fought and died at the Alamo. According to a source I > found on the net he was listed as being from Wales. My mom says that she was told > that JOHNSONs were from Sweden. > It has been said that Johnsons are from Sweden. But we are also from > Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, all of Scandinavia, Germany (maybe > spelled Johansson or Jonsson or mangled from Jorganson), and Normandy. > Gerald J. snip~~ (A Salute to Lewis, otherwise I might be a citizen of Mexico, without his sacrifice!, I prefer the USA.) Lewis certainly could have been from Sweden orginally, but He is the one that listed home as Wales. I know the person you speak from history. Being born in south Tx. I have read about the Alamo all my life and have visited it many times. There's a ton of documents about Alamo defenders on the web. My cousins have searched the our Swedish line, Carlson, and one even traveled to Sweden to trace it. Her findings show that Gerald (good job, better than I ) is very correct. In addition, the first born (especially) was called the father's name plus either 'sson', 'son', or 'dotter'.... in that my grandfather named Carl, was the son of Carl; But the older Carl was the son of Lars. So the name was Larsson for a generation, then changed. (We don't know who Lars was the son of...) Many Johnson's came from Sweden and other Scandinavian countries, to the UK, (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland), and then on to America. Many went thru Germany and bypassed the UK. When they hit America, it was almost always changed to whatever 'someone' decided it 'should' be. So much for my poor attempt to explain this, but a couple of years ago I had no idea how it worked, so maybe it will help someone understand. Sorry to bore the older gene.. people. I too have a brick wall on my Johnson' line. Maybe someone that knows Alabama Johnsons can help. In Alabama, or Mississippi, about mid- 1800's, does anyone have some Johnsons like this missing? (some went to Arkansas during or close after the Civil War)) UNKNOWN JOHNSON died Abt. 1861 in Alabama. He married ELIZABETH ELIZABETH's father is supposed to have died 'at the turn of the Civil War'. Children of UNKNOWN JOHNSON and ELIZABETH (JOHNSON) are: STEVEN (STEPHAN?) JOHNSON ELIZABETH JOHNSON JAMES T JOHNSON MARY (MARTHA?) JOHNSON HENRY A JOHNSON JONNEY JOHNSON, b. September 1835, Alabama; d. October 1908, Arkansas. This spelling is off his tombstone that is very worn from age. May be Johnney, which is still probably just JOHN for his birth name. GEORGE WASHINGTON JOHNSON, b. February 15, 1855, Alabama; d. September 10, 1899, Sheridan, Grant, Arkansas. Thanks for your patience, and for any help. Randy
