I wouldn't be surprised if some of the Johnsons in Ecuador might have come from sailing days when Guayaquil was an important port for ships sailing around the Horn and one, or more, sailors or passengers named Johnson decided they liked what they saw and stayed there. Then again Ecuador has mountains, and mountains always draw prospectors. Johnson is one of the more common names and, in the US at least, has become more common because names like Johnstone, Johnston, Jansen, Janssen and Johannsen, and even MacIan, have been altered into Johnson.
