My ggggrandmother was a Mary Johnson in Monmouth County NJ the wife of Gilbert VanMarter/VanMater (1757-1811). Mary and Gilbert probably lived in the Hightstown NJ area. My Aunt Alice left me a list of Mary's Johnson ancestry, but without any detail such as dates. Here is what I have: Generation I Benjamin Johnson married unknown 1. William married Elce unknown 2. Benjamin (see Generation II) 3. David Generation II Benjamin Johnson married Sarah unknown 1. John 2. Daniel 3. William 4. James (see Generation III) 5. David 6. Amos 7. Rachel 8. Elizabeth 9. Hannah 10. Rebecca Generation III James Johnson married Anna Brewer 1. James 2. Mary married Gilbert VanMarter (1757-1811) 3. Joseph 4. Mary 5. Elizabeth 6. three other daughters Many of the residents of Monmouth County in Central Jersey had moved down from North Jersey, Staten Island, Manhattan and Brooklyn in the late 17th century, but there were a significant number of settlers from southern New England and eastern Long Island. Johnsons from North Jersey could have been either Scots Johnsons or Dutch Jansens. Settlers from what is today NYC were mostly Dutch, while Johnsons from Eastern Long Island and New England were most likely English. It is probable that these folks were farmers for the most part. You will note that Mary Johnson had a son Johnston VanMarter. My aunt insisted that she was sure that Mary was Johnson and her son was named Johnston. The Johnson given names in the list certainly don't stand out and there isn't much spousal information. However, perhaps something will ring a bell. Ed Margerum
