I am also researching a JOHNSON family that sounds similar to yours. Have you checked out these pages at "Worldconnect"? http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=jlo042742&id=I4424 http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=dlinkert&id=I11758 Both of these researchers connect my ancestor "John M. JOHNSON" to Jesse JOHNSON. However, not all the information fits and I don't really know if the connection should be there. My JOHNSONs apparently moved from Pennsylvania > Ohio > Illinois > Iowa. I know where they were in Iowa but locations prior to about 1870 are very difficult to determine. Before PA I don't know where they were, either. Jeanne Johnson William <natureboy7@hotmail.com> wrote: Samuel Monroe Johnson was the son of Jesse Johnson who was born in Virginia in 1798. Jesse had two known brothers: Hosier (B.1810) in Maryland and Peter (Born 1811) Ohio. Jesse, Hosier, and Peter Johnson were farmers who eventually settled in Bartholomew County Indiana and are all buried in the Kansas Methodist Church Cemetery in Bartholmew County - which is now part of Camp Atterbury, a military base established in 1942. I have visited the cemetery and have photos of the tombstones of these 3 men and can share if you'd like. I am searching for the parents of these 3 men and would be greatful for any assistance in this matter! > From: JoMertz@aol.com> Date: Tue, 16 Oct 2007 12:22:50 -0400> To: johnson@rootsweb.com> Subject: [JOHNSON] Question---Johnson's from VA to Ohio ???> > My brick wall is a unknown JOHNSON family moved from an unknown city in VA > supposedly due to slavery disputes and had a son Samuel Monroe JOHNSON born in > an unknown city in Ohio January 21, 1820. Looking for Mary Johnson born in Pennsylvania (or Tennessee). Died in Perry, Tippecanoe, Indiana, USA. Married William Masters in Ohio. In the family Bible there is a Joseph Johnson mentioned (no relationship given), born 29 Dec 1743. Any clues to relatives would be appreciated. SWISS NAMING PATTERNS: The Swiss used naming patterns and these naming patterns continued at least through the first generation of emigrants to PA. Using one of the simple prescribed naming patterns, it is expected the person will be named Ulrich or a variation of that name. Using one of the most common patterns, Abraham Flury named his oldest son Ulrich after the grandfather, the second son Jacob after his father and his third son Abraham after himself. Abraham's uncle Franz Flury also had a son named Ulrich. Even Abraham's sons continued to use this naming pattern. These people did not give their children just any name. But rather the first generation continued to name them according to the customs in the old country. . . There were sometimes simple and sometimes rather complicated naming customs. . . (PROF. DR. W. H. RUOFF, A CENTURY OF EMIGRATION FROM THE PALATINATE TO THE USA, Part II SWITZERLAND, WORLD CONFERENCE ON RECORDS AND GENALOGICAL SEMINAR, SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, USA, 5-8 AUG 1969.

Scottish Naming Customs The Scots often followed a naming pattern in the 1700s & 1800s and this has proved helpful when trying to piece together families. MALES Eldest son - named after his paternal grandfather Second son - after his maternal grandfather Third son - after his father Fourth son - after his father's eldest brother FEMALES Eldest daughter - after her maternal grandmother Second daughter - after her paternal grandmother Third daughter - after her mother Fourth daughter - after her mother's eldest sister The order is sometimes reversed i.e. the eldest son is named after his maternal grandfather, and eldest daughter is named Younger children would be named after earlier forebears, but the pattern in their case was less settled." Source: "In search of Scottish Ancestry" by Gerald Hamilton-Edwards, Phillimore, 1983 Edition In Scotland - as in the rest of Western Europe - there were four main ways of acquiring a surname:- Patronymic - taking the father's Christian name e.g. Robertson Occupation - e.g. Smith (the most common surname of all) Locality - e.g. Wood Nickname - e.g. White, Little. Patronymics - Lowland names such as Wilson, Robertson, Thomson and Johnson are among the most common surnames in Scotland. 'Mac' names are also patronymic. MacManus - son of Magnus. 'Mc' is just a printer's contraction and has no significance as to etymology. Occupation - Names which are derived from trades and occupations - mostly found in towns. The most common of these is Smith (the most common surname in Scotland, England and the USA) but other examples would be Taylor (tailor) Baxter (baker) and Cooper (barrel maker). Locality - In Scotland the tendency is for people to be named after places (in England the tendency is the opposite). Examples of such names are Morton, Lauder, Menzies and Galloway. Nickname - Names which could refer to colour or size, e.g. White, Black, Small, Little. Scottish names in this category include Campbell (meaning 'crooked mouth'). Another example of nickname - this time referring to the bearers origins - is Scott.
When researching your family tree, knowing a standard naming pattern for the children in a family might help you in confirming your family history. The following naming pattern was supplied by Jean Lawson, Genealogist. It helps to explain why similar names were common through various generations of families. Below is the Irish naming order that Families in Ireland have used for centuries. Sons: First son after father's father Second son after mother's father Third son after father Fourth son after father's oldest brother Fifth son after mother's oldest brother (Sometimes father's 2nd. oldest brother) Daughters: First daughter after mother's mother (or father's mother) Second daughter after father's mother (or mother's mother) Third daughter after mother Fourth daughter after mother's oldest sister Fifth daughter after father's oldest sister (Sometimes mother's 2nd. oldest sister)

Samuel Monroe Johnson was the son of Jesse Johnson who was born in Virginia in 1798. Jonsson and Jonsdotter sure fit our family surname. But were sons and daughters of John whatever John's last name was. In my family, I'm detecting the possibility of simple naming patterns but more often names adopted from famous names, sometimes biblical (like John the root of our surname), sometimes public figures such as leaders, sometimes literally the names of particularly inspiring preachers, sometimes names of favorite relations. One hint that might show a family fitting to a traditional naming pattern would show where the offspring of two or more siblings have the same sequence of boys and girls names. So a naming pattern can be a hint, but shouldn't be required for a family match. When there were more children than grandparents they ran out of simple pattern names. Gerald J.
Remember that "Naming Patterns" are a very important part of any research as there was an established Scottish and Irish Pattern on what child would be named after who. I am looking for information on James Johnson, born Virginia in 1780, married Nancy (unknown) born 1793 in unknown county in North Carolina. They were in Tennessee by 1814 as their son Joseph was born in that state that year.
Janie, Here is a link to what I have about my John Johnson. I had hoped that he might be the brother of Jesse and Levi, but you may be right, it may have been their brother who was hanged in the 1770s. I've got the record of that...somewhere. http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=9809 &id=I00924 I really suppose I need to do a DNA test and see if I match with any other Johnsons. I had always hoped to figure everything out first and then prove it with a DNA test. Jeremiah Johnson, son of John, married Nancy Forrest in 1800, Orange Co., NC. That's what lead me to look in Orange County and then Chatham, which, if memory serves me correct, was formed from Orange. Also, there was a John Johnson who married Lydia Hutchens in 1770. I think they lived in Surry Co., NC. Does anyone have a listing of their children? Jeremy
I am trying to find some information on my grandfather James Parker Johnson (born 7/29/1901, died 8/1/1942) who married Omer Darse Sparks. I think he was born in either GA or AL. I believe his father was Martin Johnson from Arab, Alabama. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Mike
