Hi all! Happy New Year! I'm new. I just got some information that my ggg grandfather was Charles Johnson or Johnston and he and his wife Jane Barker (Barger?) had a child named Priscilla\ Precilla Johnson in Breckinridge Co., KY in 1861. I honestly can't prove any of this yet. I know my gg grandmother went by Priscilla Johnson Milburn because I have a copy of a certificate she filled out. Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? Thanks! Tammy
Hi John, No, I didn't receive any earlier message than this one, so thanks for responding again. I don't know anything about the Duke family except what I've learned from you :-) I did notice in the information that you sent me that Mary Johnson, daughter of Joshua Johnson who married Charles Duke, seems to live next door to Joshua Johnson in this 1850 census. The age of that Mary, wife of Charles Duke matches the age of Joshua's daughter Mary at least. And you will notice that in Charles and Mary Duke's household AND in Joshua Johnson's household there is a Castleberry. I have often wondered where they fit in -- I have assumed that they were live-in help of some kind, and maybe the two Castleberry women were sisters working for Joshua Johnson and his daughter Mary's households. As to the HILL connection, I don't know. There is a Ben Hill County in Georgia, named after a Confederate soldier who became a GA senator. So it's possible that your Ben Hill Johnsons were named after him rather than any family connection with the Hill Family. I will email you off-list to give you my snail mail address, and much appreciate your offer to send copies of the pension applications. I will also gather any additional information I have on Joshua Johnson and send that along to you via snail mail if you'll send me your address. Good luck! GA 1850 Dorothy: I don't know if you got my reply and sent anything or not. What with the holidays and all. I would appreciate any information you have. Please post it on the Johnson list. I have been having trouble with my emails lately but I seem to get the list okay. I think Joshua Johnson is the line I am descended from. I notice in the 1850 census he lives close to Delia Ann Dukes two uncles, so there was plenty of chance for them to meet. Do you by any chance know who the parents of Charles Duke (who married Mary Johnson) was? Also do you know where William and Delia Ann were in the 1860 census? I haven't been able to find them or where they were married at so far. I found Joshua Johnson on the 1860 U.S. Census for Early County, using Heritage Quest at the Library. I found it interesting that he lived in house 61 and in house 48 was Joseph A. Hill, 23, m, NC, planter and his wife Mary E., 20, GA and son Maxwell age 1. Makes me wonder if they are related, especially with Joshua and Joseph both being born in NC. William and Delia Ann named there son Ben Hill Johnson. I went to the Horry County, SC website hoping they would have some information and they were very skimpy. I sent off about 6 or 8 emails asking for information and lookups to email addresses shown on the website and got them kicked back as no longer valid. I also took a look at the Warren Co., NC website (where the Duke family came from) hoping there might be a Joshua Johnson listed there but no luck. Need to check Halifax Co. and the other counties around it also. Thank you for the information and I look forward to anything else you would care to share. If you will send me your snail mail address I will send you copies of the pension applications I just got. Or if you have a fax number I can fax them. Anyway, thanks again. John R. My ggrandfather, Ben Hill Johnson, was born in Dec. 1855. So it is unlikely he was named after the Confederate soldier. I thought about that before and tried to check on it with no joy as the British say. John R. I'm not sure if this is my line or not. Delia Ann Duke Johnson's grandfather was Shadrack Duke (b. 4/21/1769 in Warren Co., NC, d. 5/15/1833 in Old Starksburg, Lee Co., GA). He was the s/o Benjamin Duke (b. abt 1718, d. 7/25/1801 in Burke Co., GA.). Shadrack is the only child I have listed for Benjamin. I am sure there were probably more children of Benjamin, but I don't have any other names of children. I think the Dukes came originally from VA as Warren Co, NC is right on the line between VA and NC. Warren Co was formed from Bute Co. in 1799. So I don't know if the line you are checking is in mine or not. It could well be if his father's name was Benjamin Duke or John Duke (father of Benjamin and Simon Duke). Funny how many wound up in Upson Co.. The Dukes are my fathers line. My mother was a Torbert and there are still some Torberts living in Upson Co. today. My aunt Ruth Torbert married Marion Barron from Upson Co.. His father of a preacher there and Uncle Marion was a preacher in Baxley, GA. Here is a link to Warren Co., NC it has some information on the Duke family. I hope it is of a help to you. http://www.mynorthcarolinagenealogy.com/nc_county/war.htm John R. John, I am working on the Duke family presently from Kershaw, Lancaster, Co, S.C. Robert Duke b.1740 in Va died there and left a will. His wife was Nancy Crenshaw daughter of Joseph Crenshaw of Lunenburg Co, Va. Their son Stephen Duke was married three times and moved to Jasper Co, Ga and then to Upson Co , Ga wher he died. He left a will there and named a daughter Delliah who married Aaron Hickman. Let me know if this is your line. Dorothy: I don't know if you got my reply and sent anything or not. John R. Hi John, I have been watching your posts because your times and dates of Johnson ancestors were close to mine, and if this Joshua Johnson in Baker County is yours, we are researching lines of the same family. I have more information on this Joshua Johnson and his family. I'll post some of it below, and you can let me know if this looks like your family -- I have more info on him. I am a descendant of Joshua's brother David. Joshua Johnson was born October 9, 1791 in North Carolina, died after Jun 13, 1863 in Early County, GA. He married Candis (Candice) Reeves about 1815 in Horry County, SC. She is the daughter of Mark Reaves and Spicey Smith. She was born 1795 in NC, but her family was in Horry Co. SC also. They had the following children: Spicy Ann Johnson b. 1816 Ann S. Johnson Helen Johnson Mary Johnson m. Charles DUKE Parizade (Zade) Johnson Thomas Gardner Johnson 1829-ca. 1891 Daniel A. Johnson b. abt 1832 William T. Johnson b. abt 1835 Samuel A. Johnson b. abt 1838 George Johnson b. about 1840, died during the civil war or shortly after Joshua is shown in his father's household (Joshua Johnson, SR.) in Horry County SC in 1810. Joshua and Candis are in their own household in Horry Co. in 1820, in Bibb Co. GA in 1830 and 1840, and then in Baker Co GA in 1850 and Early County GA in 1860. Joshua's will as written June 13, 1863 and recorded in Early Co. The 1860 census shows two children Reuben (11) and Virginia (10), who were Joshua's orphaned grandchildren (by daughter Parizade), mentioned in Joshua's will and his brother David's diary. I have a good bit more information on this extended family that I can send if you'd like. This Joshua (Jr.) is one of six sons and three daughters of Joshua Johnson, Sr. who was born in NC and moved to Horry Co. SC between 1800 and 1810. Joshua SR (my brick wall) and his wife died between 1810 and 1820, and at least five of the six sons moved into Georgia. One of the brothers was Jacob Johnson who married Candis Reaves' sister Mary (Polly), so brothers Joshua and Jacob married sisters Candis and Polly. Let me know if you'd like more information. I can either post it on the list, or we can email off-list. Is anyone researching the family of William Johnson b. 17 Mar 1812; d. 11 Sep 1891. Married to Elizabeth Shultz about 1834-1835. William lived in Huntingdon county Pennsylvania. Sometimes Johnson is spelled Johnston in the census records. I appreciate any help. I am interested in information on John Martin Johnson and his wife Nancy Deboard who were born in possibly Wilkes co. NC. and died in Kentucky. There is a John and Nancy Johnson buried in the Ramey Branch Cemetery along with McKinley Johnson. This Ramey Branch Cemetery is near Flat Gap, in Johnson co. Ky. and is the same cemetery where my great great great grandparents Thomas J. and Sarah Williams are buried along with Thomas J. Rameys parents Daniel and Nancy Pelphrey Ramey. There are also other Johnsons buried in this cemetery.I would like to hear from anyone on this Johnson family. May God bless you all in 2008 and beyond. Duane McKenzie. <dmckenze@hutchtel.net>
