    3. So in 1654 New Kent formed from n/a York, this means The Reverend Edward Johnson died in lands that were in YORK CO in 1665 leaving a son Edward Johnson, a wife Mrs. Johnson and who is Mrs. Mallory (most likely daughter or sister) Per his Inventory. One needs to get into York County records to find out more "Truths" about Reverend Edward Johnson as it appears he only had on MALE heir from this and that was Edward Johnson his son. Dang those links are duplicating again. if you want to read the links take from http: to where you see this < and only use that section between them in your search engine Tony

    3. 1655 Sept 25: Mihill Gowen, a slave of Christopher Stafford of York County, Virginia, was given his freedom in two documents made by Anne Barnhouse, a widow of Capt. Richard Barnhouse and the sister of Christopher Stafford. The documents were recorded in "York County, Virginia Wills, Deeds and Orders, 1657-1659," and they read as follows: "I, Anne Barnhouse of Martin Hundred, widow, have given Mihil Gowen, Negro, at this time servant to Robert Stafford, a male child born 25 August 1655 of the body of my Negro, Prossa, being baptized by Mr. Edward Johnson 25 September 1655 and named William, and I bind myself never to trouble Mihil Gowen or his son, William or demand any service of them. 16 September 1657." "Mihil Gowen, Negro, of late serving my brother Xtopher Stafford, dcsd, by his last will & testament, had his freedom given him after the expiration of 4 years service to my uncle, Robert Stafford. I, Anne Barnhouse do absolve, quit and discharge the said Mihil Gowen from my service 25 October 1657. A.B. 1. Re: [JOHNSON] Updated Johnson Files
    2. John Johnson
    3. Tony; Could you send me the Johnston Co. and Warren Co. files. I have some relatives (Duke family) who came from Warren County. I wish you had the files for Chowan and Samson and Duplin counties also. I have identified my gggggrandfather as Joshua Johnson, who lived in NC and moved to SC (Horry Co.) in the early 1800's. I don't know where in NC he lived but his sons, including my ggggrandfather, Joshua Jr., moved to Bibb Co., GA. It's possible Joshua, Sr also was born in VA and moved to NC, but that is just specutlation. I will post below some of what I have found. John R. Johnson Heritage Quest shows two Joshua Johnsons on the 1790 census. This could be Joshua, Sr before Joshua Jr. was born. On in in Chowan County, Edenton Dist.Dorothy said she thinks the most likely areas were Duplin Co. or Sampson Co or Chowan in 1790. But Duplin and Sampson Co. show up on heritage quest. John R. Johnson This is the listing for Chowan Co, 1790 You have: males males all over 16 under 16 females other slaves total of family Samuel Johnston, Esq 1 2 3 0 0 5 Charles Johnson, Esq 2 2 0 0 35 39 Joshua Johnson 1 0 1 0 0 2 and further down the page is: Joseph Johnson 1 1 3 0 0 5 Bereheba Johnson 0 1 3 0 9 4 The other Joshua shown is in Martin Co., Halifax Dist. I can'r read the page on this one so I will have to take the word of the person at Heritage Quest who posted this. The 1800 census shows a Joshua Johnson in Tyrrell Co., Perquimans County, Johnston County, Guilford County, and Edgecombe County. All these are NC. There is one Joshua Johnson in Edgefield Co., SC in the 1800 census. I sure wish the older census gave more information. There is a Joshua Johnson listed in the 1810 census for SC in Horry County I think the one in Horry Co is my Joshua Johnson. This is part of the e mail I got from Dorothy Johnson Callaway. I have a good bit more information on this extended family that I can send if you'd like. This Joshua (Jr.) is one of six sons and three daughters of Joshua Johnson, Sr. who was born in NC and moved to Horry Co. SC between 1800 and 1810. Joshua SR (my brick wall) and his wife died between 1810 and 1820, and at least five of the six sons moved into Georgia. One of the brothers was Jacob Johnson who married Candis Reaves' sister Mary (Polly), so brothers Joshua and Jacob married sisters Candis and Polly. Joshua Johnson was born October 9, 1791 in North Carolina, died after Jun 13, 1863 in Early County, GA. He married Candis (Candice) Reaves about 1815 in Horry County, SC. She is the daughter of Mark Reaves and Spicey Smith. She was born 1795 in NC, but her family was in Horry Co. SC also. 1. JOSHUA1 JOHNSON, SR. who lived in North Carolina from at least 1780 through 1802 then moved to Horry Co. SC where he died Bet. 1810 - 1820, South Carolina. His wife's name is unknown and she died between 1810 - 1820. Children of JOSHUA JOHNSON, Sr. and UNKNOWN are: i. WILLIAM2 JOHNSON, b. Bef. 1791, North Carolina; d. Bef. 1858, probably in GA ii. JACOB JOHNSON, b. Bef. 1791, North Carolina; d. Bet. 1848 - 1858, Georgia (Bibb Co.?); m. MARY "POLLY" REAVES; d. October 16, 1841, Bibb Co., Georgia. iii. JOSHUA JOHNSON, JR., b. October 09, 1791, North Carolina; d. Aft. June 13, 1863, Early Co., GA. iv. ENOCH JOHNSON, b. Abt. 1793, North Carolina; d. December 20, 1860, DeSoto Parish, LA. never married. v. NATHAN JOHNSON, b. Bet. 1793 - 1801, North Carolina; d. 3. My grandfather was Thomas Jefferson Johnson of Wayne Co, W VA & he married my grandmother Victoria America Leigh Porter of Pike Co, KY. They had corresponded & never met until the day they married in 1880 when she was only 15 years old. His father was William Johnson who had married Matilda Willis in 1840's in Lawrence Co, KY. She had been born in Ohio. William had been married before as he had a son Benjamin F Johnson, who married Mary Ann Merrideth. Benjamin's marriage license reads as follows: Benjamin F Johnson, age 34 , widow, from Alexandria, DC, son of William and Matilda Willis, married Mary A Merideth, age 20, of Belmont, Ohio, daughter of David and Mary Merideth on Feb 17, 1861. They were married by Rev R T or R P Johnson. Would really like to know more about William & who his parents & first wife were. Is any of this familliar to anyone? 1. [JOHNSON] JOHNSON, Andrew and Tilda, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA 1900-1950
    2. Cynthia Russell
    3. I am helping a lady in Sweden to locate any American descendants for a 2009 reunion. I posted information earlier and now I have some changed and added details. I am not at all familiar with Swedish genealogy as my family came from Ireland and Scotland. Need YOUR help, please! Yesterday I telephoned Ridgewood Cemetery and was surprised to find Tilda buried next to Andrew with her death listed as 1950. I intend to call again today with more questions. In the 1920 census Andrew is listed as a widower. Information from the family is that Tilda died about 1912, but Ridgewood Cemetery did not exist until 1920. I am now wondering, and will ask, if perhaps Tilda was moved from another cemetery and reburied in Ridgewood. This is definitely a possibility. It would seem obvious to me that Andrew and Tilda's relationship must have been in tact to be buried beside one another. But, why is Andrew listed as a widower in the census and Tilda not enumerated if she was still living? And, their two children, Agnes and Arthur were both adopted. They were born to parents of Swedish birth and adopted by people of Swedish birth. Can anyone suggest a course of action to determine the biological parents of these children? Or what happened to them? The point of this research is to locate any living descendants before a family reunion to be held in Sweden for all family members. Ridgewood Cemetery provided the date of death and burial from their card for Andrew JOHNSON. I would like to have other eyes and minds look at this information to see if I am missing something. All suggestions are invited! I would like to ask if someone could find obituaries for: Andrew JOHNSON - 11 Jun 1935, Chicago Mathilda/Thilda/Tilda Backstrom JOHNSON - 1912 or 19 May 1950, Chicago Arthur JOHNSON - unknown date, probably Chicago Agnes JOHNSON - unknown date, probably Chicago Mabel Johnson ANDERSON - unknown date Andrew JOHNSON born 11 May 1856 Nederkalix, Sweden married 13 Mar 1887, Nederkalix, Sweden died 11 Jun 1935, Chicago Cook County, Illinois, USA buried Ridgewood Cemetery, Section 26, Lot 195, Grave 2; card listing that nearest relative listed is Swedish Covenant Hospital, Des Plaines, Illinois church, Edgewater Covenant Church, Chicago wife: Mathilda BACKSTROM, also known as Thilda, Tilda born 9 Mar 1867, Nederkalix, Sweden died 19 May 1950, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA buried Ridgewood Cemetery, Section 26, Lot 195, Grave 1, Des Plaines, Illinois Children: Agnes JOHNSON, b. August 1890, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA, adopted; listed in 1900 census, 1910 census Arthur JOHNSON, b. Apr 1898, Chicago, Cook County, Illinois, USA; adopted; listed in 1900 census, 1910 census Also, listed on a cemetery card for Mathilda is a daughter named Mabel Anderson. If she was the daughter of Andrew and Tilda JOHNSON her maiden name would have been Mabel JOHNSON, but she is not listed in the 1900 or 1910 census with the other children. And, where did Mabel, possibly Johnson, Anderson come into the picture? This is quite puzzling because she was listed by Ridgewood Cemetery as a daughter. She would not be a daughter-in-law because her name would have been JOHNSON. So many unsolved questions! Can you help please? Both Andrew and Tilda are listed on the 1900 census. But only Andrew is listed in the 1910 and he is listed as a widower. 3. Hello, I do have gg aunt Jessie Johnson (spouse of Albert) who was in Vaudville during the early 1900's. For awhile they were in Europe but spent much time in California. Vern Johnson (Juggler) was also was involved in the troupe. Children included Alta (contortionist/ acrobat)and Alva. They were all quite talented singers and musicians. If you see any of these clues in the postcards, you may have hit upon the right family. You are a gracious man! I had looked all through Breckinridge Co and Hardin Co KY 1880 census and was seeking the 1860 census. Cheers to you, Tammy

    3. Your Thomas county Johnsons are in the same time period and county as my Thomas county Johnsons. Mine included James who migrated from Virginia to S. Carolina by 1789, wife Martha Summerlin Colson, Susan Barbara (married Richard H. Thomas of Union Co., S.C.), Thomas Jefferson Johnson, who fought along with Richard Thomas in the war of 1812 (by that time, they were in Pulaski county, Ga) and Eleanor who married Josiah Everett. Thomas Jefferson Johnson proceeded to help found Thomas county and probably had something to do with naming it after relative General Jett Thomas, then founded Pebble Hill Plantation in Thomasville, where most of these folks are buried. (They give daily tours of the plantation). Family still in Thomas county till end of Civil War. If you have any info on relations, I would love to have it!
