    1. [JOHNSON] KNUT JOHNSEN, HELGA HANSEN
    2. A. Reed
    3. To post my paternal Grandmother's line... My G-Grandfather was KNUT JOHNSEN b. Norway about 1880's, came to Canada around the turn of the century with his wife HELGA Marie Louise HANSEN and settled in Whitney, Ontario to raise their family. There may have been more, but I only know of two children, Andrew b.? and Margit JOHNSEN b. 1908. Andrew married Mary(?). Their children (that I know) were Jack, Leslie, Deloris, Shirley, and George JOHNSEN, mostly born in the 1920's and 1930's in Whitney. Margit married Laurent CONANT in 1928, they had 4 children, Lawrence Reginald CONANT, Raymond Alexander CONANT, Donald Kenneth CONANT, and Eleanor Joyce (Head). I believe KNUT JOHNSEN came over to Canada from Reiser, Norway on the SS Tunisian. I do have an Aunt with more info, but she's very busy and 3000 kms away, though we do keep in touch. I'd love to hear from any JOHNSENs of this lineage, Grandma (Margit) would be thrilled too. Would love to share any info from my Aunt, if anyone has any questions I'd have an excuse to call her and pick her brain some more. Happy hunting! Annette Conant-Reed, Radium Hot Springs, BC Canada

    1. [JOHNSON] JOHNSONS Redding, Sterling, John...VA>NC>FL
    2. I am hoping that there is someone out there with information on the following individuals.... I have many descendants of CHARLES HENRY JOHNSON that I would be willing to share. Thanks, Toni Cain Moody REDDING JOHNSON who was born Abt. 1815 in North Carolina, and died Aft. 1880 in probably in Escambia Co., Florida. He married CHARLOTTE "LOTTY" UNKNOWN, She was born Abt. 1815 in North Carolina, and died Aft 1880n probably in Escambia Co., Florida. Children of REDDING JOHNSON and CHARLOTTE UNKNOWN are: i. CHARLES HENRY JOHNSON, b. January 08, 1851, Georgia; d. Aft. 1920, Escambia County, Florida. (even though headstone gives date of 1916, this is clearly inaccurate as he his found buying property in 1918 and is enumerated in the 1920 Census) CHARLES HENRY JOHNSON married ARIADNA A. "ARIE" RESPESS August 30, 1874 in Escambia Co., Florida, daughter of HENRY RESPESS and EMELINE UNKNOWN. She was born April 1858 in Georgia, and died Bet. 1918 - 1920 in Escambia Co., Florida. ii. MARY JOHNSON, b. Abt. 1859; d. Unknown. ============================================================ I first find Redden (Redan) in the 1850 Federal Census of Escambia County, Florida. Redding and Charlotte are both listed as 35 and they have no children. The next family is that of a 42 year old JOHN JOHNSON (b ca 1807) who is listed as being born in Virginia. This same John Johnson is always listed close by in other census and I suspect a relationship there .In 1860 I cannot find Redding but John is still there. Redding and Charlotte reappear in 1870 with two children HENRY, age 17 born in Georgia and MARY, age 11 born in Florida. In this census Redding is listed as 55 and Charlotte is 59. Reddan and Lotty are last found in the 1880 census of Escambia County, Florida. He is 68...she is 69.

    1. [JOHNSON] More NY information/Freeman
    2. I did find Freeman Johnson in the IGI and he was married to Eliza COONS. These may be the parents of my Laura JOHNSON who married Philip FINGER, ca 1830. According to the IGI, they were married 1804. However, when I located them on the Columbia County, NY cemetery fiche (Old Vedder Cemetery), their dates are really wrong as parents. Freeman died 20 Jan. 1862 at age 50 years, 11 months, and 28 days. This means he wasn't born until years after he was married. Same for his wife, Eliza Coons. She died in 1882 at age 72. With these dates, Freeman would be more likely a sibling to Laura than a parent. So something is wrong. The marriage was extracted from the church records. The microfiche are extremely difficult to read, white on black background, etc, but that big a discrepancy surely isn't a microfiche error. Anyway, I ordered the church film and after I extract the Johnson data, I'll post the info here. Old Vedder is where many of my husband's Magley, Finger, Duntz, etc. are buried. Lovely place. We've walked it many times. Shirley Maynard Hampton, VA

    3. To all searching West Virginia, please remember that West Virginia did not become a state until June of 1863. I believe that anyone born prior to statehood would have been listed in a Virginia or Maryland census. Death certificates may also list place of birth as Virginia or Maryland if the individual was born prior to statehood. I am unaware if the county names or configurations changed after statehood, but I am sure there were some changes. Scott

    1. [JOHNSON] NY Freeman Johnson, 1840
    2. This is my first posting since returning to the list. I think I've found Laura Johnson's father. Laura Johnson was born ca 1810 but died prematurally prior to 1847. She married Philip FINGER prior to 1831 when her first child, Egbert, was born. She died after her second child, Mary, was born in 1834, and her widower's second wife's child, Hellene, was born, 1847. So Laura never showed up on a census other than as a slash mark. However, on the 1840 NY, Columbia County, Gallatinville federal census, page 069, Philip Finger and Freeman Finger were neighbors. Not definite proof this is Laura's father, of course, but better than no lead to follow. Does anyone have anything on Freeman Johnson? I did find a query on an 1897 Freman Johnson, but the years are too many to span right now. Does anyone have a pre-1840 Egbert Johnson in the family? We've wondered how the name Egbert traveled down the generations until present time? I'll be willing to exchange any JOHNSON in NY information that I should find...and I expect to collect a lot of miscellaneous until I prove or disprove Freeman Johnson as Laura's father...for help with this line. Shirley Maynard
