My brick wall is John JOHNSON b.1790 Pennsylvania md 1811 to Barbara HUNT b. 1788 Maryland. They lived in Springhill twp, Fayette Co Pa in 1831. I found them on the taxlist there. I don't know where they were married or where they lived prior to that year. I think they may be the Johnston family that is in Westmoreland Co in 1830, but I have no proof of this at this time. The JOHNSON'S moved to Jay Co Indiana by 1846. Barbara and her younger children are on the 1850 census there. I am not sure if John died in Pennsylvania prior to the move, or along the way, or in Ind after they arrived. There is no land records or guardianship records in Jay Co. Ind. for them. John's mother was Mary (nee?) b. 1763 d 1835 md to Mr (unknown) Johnson. The last four children married in Jay Co. Ind. Children: Sarah (md John FRANK/S), Thomas B. (md Catherine FRANKENBERGER). John Jr (md Mary LANCASTER), Mary (md Robert GIBSON), Elizabeth (md David JONES), Ann (died a baby), Huldah (md Tret? CRAGO), Catherine (md Joseph BENNETT), Rachel (md Adam KIMBLE/KIMBALL), Elisha Garfield (md Vesta FULLER & Sarah WATSON), & Benjamin R. (md Emeline BENNETT). Thomas B. died in Springhill twp, Fayette Co Pa....John Jr, Mary, & Huldah may have staid in the Fayette co area. Sarah & Elizabeth brought their families to Indiana. Some of these children and descendants came into Wisconsin in the early 1860's. Thanks, Selma

Hi fellow Johnson searchers!!! My brick wall may possibly still be alive. I don't have very much info on him. His name was Leon Johnson. He married Lillian Lucille Wilburn (spelling?) Lillian was my grandfathers half-sister. We do know that for a time they lived in Huntsville, AL. And in 1939 they were in San Antonio, TX. Leon had a set of twin sisters, but I don't know what their names were. As far as dates go, I would say that Lillian was born sometime in the late teens. Her mother, Sarah Ann Elizabeth (Clement) Norris married Milo Wilburn after 1914. I know that Leon and Lillian divorced, but don't know when or where. Then Lillian "took up" with a married man and they both disappeared. No one has heard from her since. We have not been able to find any hint of a paper trail on either Leon or Lillian. My mother went to Huntsville to the courthouse to see if she could find some kind of record on them, but there was nothing. Lillian's half-sister, Mary, is still alive and kicking at the ripe old age of 93 and is still sharp as a tack, but like to know what happened to Lillian. I figure that finding something on Leon would be my best hope of locating her. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Eric, Very informative. Could you direct me to someplace that would explain that Jones came from Johnson. I was of the understanding they were Very split apart by many centuries, and of war-faring tribes that fought each other in pre Roman days. NOT trying to start any arguement.. just wondering... Randy

snip~~~~~~~~~~~ > Lewis JOHNSON fought and died at the Alamo. According to a source I > found on the net he was listed as being from Wales. My mom says that she was told > that JOHNSONs were from Sweden. > It has been said that Johnsons are from Sweden. But we are also from > Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, all of Scandinavia, Germany (maybe > spelled Johansson or Jonsson or mangled from Jorganson), and Normandy. > Gerald J. snip~~ (A Salute to Lewis, otherwise I might be a citizen of Mexico, without his sacrifice!, I prefer the USA.) Lewis certainly could have been from Sweden orginally, but He is the one that listed home as Wales. I know the person you speak from history. Being born in south Tx. I have read about the Alamo all my life and have visited it many times. There's a ton of documents about Alamo defenders on the web. My cousins have searched the our Swedish line, Carlson, and one even traveled to Sweden to trace it. Her findings show that Gerald (good job, better than I ) is very correct. In addition, the first born (especially) was called the father's name plus either 'sson', 'son', or 'dotter'.... in that my grandfather named Carl, was the son of Carl; But the older Carl was the son of Lars. So the name was Larsson for a generation, then changed. (We don't know who Lars was the son of...) Many Johnson's came from Sweden and other Scandinavian countries, to the UK, (England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland), and then on to America. Many went thru Germany and bypassed the UK. When they hit America, it was almost always changed to whatever 'someone' decided it 'should' be. So much for my poor attempt to explain this, but a couple of years ago I had no idea how it worked, so maybe it will help someone understand. Sorry to bore the older gene.. people. I too have a brick wall on my Johnson' line. Maybe someone that knows Alabama Johnsons can help. In Alabama, or Mississippi, about mid- 1800's, does anyone have some Johnsons like this missing? (some went to Arkansas during or close after the Civil War)) UNKNOWN JOHNSON died Abt. 1861 in Alabama. He married ELIZABETH ELIZABETH's father is supposed to have died 'at the turn of the Civil War'. Children of UNKNOWN JOHNSON and ELIZABETH (JOHNSON) are: STEVEN (STEPHAN?) JOHNSON ELIZABETH JOHNSON JAMES T JOHNSON MARY (MARTHA?) JOHNSON HENRY A JOHNSON JONNEY JOHNSON, b. September 1835, Alabama; d. October 1908, Arkansas. This spelling is off his tombstone that is very worn from age. May be Johnney, which is still probably just JOHN for his birth name. GEORGE WASHINGTON JOHNSON, b. February 15, 1855, Alabama; d. September 10, 1899, Sheridan, Grant, Arkansas. Thanks for your patience, and for any help. Randy

Gerald, In almost all of its forms, Johnson and other "son" names can be traced back to some form of patronymic. The Scandinavians are the most prevalent simply because they abandoned the practice most recently, and had their largest wave of emigration to the US about the same time (as you stated, mid to late 1800's). As I recall, in England patronymics were formally outlawed by edict in the early 1600's, although the practice had already been mostly abandoned by that time. With very little assistance from Scandinavians, Johnson was already the fourth most common surname in the newly formed United States at the time of the American revolution. Further, the practice of patronymics (and occasionally matronymics) can be found in almost every culture. As a percentage of population, surnames which originated as patronymics comprise the single largest category of name origins, where the other common origins are, trade names (Smith, Shoemaker), place names (Waters, Rivers), and nick names (Brown, Kennedy). If you look at the top five most frequently occurring surnames in the US, Smith, Johnson, Williams, Jones and Brown respectively, only Smith and Brown are not patronymics, while Johnson and Jones are different forms of the same name (see below). In addition to "son" (generally English or Swedish), other common patronymic prefixes or suffixes include: Mc, Mac, O' - MacDonald, O'Leary - Scottish, Irish s, up - Williams, Upjohn - Welsh sen - Christiansen - Norwegian, Danish ez - Martinez, Rodriguez - Spanish sohn - Mendelssohn - German de - DeLorean - French di - DiMarco - Italian ovich - Ivanovich - Russian ibn - Ibn Nasser - Egyptian (?) al - Al Fayed - Arabic I suspect "ski" (Pulaski), "wicz" (Abramowicz) and a few other suffixes are patronymics as well, but I do not know for sure. Lastly, fortunately there are many spellings for names that all mean Johnson or "son of John". A partial list includes: Johnson Johnston Jones Jackson Johns Upjohn Ivanovich Juarez Johansson, Johanssen Janson, Jansson, Janssen, Jensen Jonsson, Jonssen And many more. If a common spelling were accepted, we would have to create one phone directory dedicated to Johnsons, and one for everyone else <g>. Regards, Eric > It has been said that Johnsons are from Sweden. But we are also from > Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales, all of Scandinavia, Germany (maybe > spelled Johansson or Jonsson or mangled from Jorganson), and Normandy. > Its been reported that there was a Johnson with the Norman invaders of > England in 1066. I think its true that Johnsons populate the whole earth > today. Many times I figure any family tree that doesn't show Johnsons is > just incomplete... > > It may be that some of the English Johnsons came down from Viking > invaders long before 1066, but in old English Johnstone meant the estate > and many servants took that as their name. The prefix Fitz in some eras > of old English meant "son of" also to confuse the issue. > > Worse confusion comes from Scandinavia where until about a century ago > the practice was to use SON as a suffix the father's given name (Dotter > for girls), so the last name of children of Sven Larson would be Svenson > and Svendotter. The last name didn't carry through the generations > unless the first name did too.

Still looking for Frank Barnes Johnson, db; February 13, 1850, somewhere in the state of IL. His parents were William Johnson and Mary Barnes. Can someone crash my brick wall? Thanks, Jan
Not really a brick wall but someone that I am interested in finding more information about. He and my grandmother, his cousin, corresponded for a number of years and exchanging photo postcards. I have scanned copies of a number of him and his family, children, and surrounding area--Fayette and Albertville, AL. Here is what I know of him. His name was J. Willie Johnson. He signed his letters as J. Willie. He took a number of pictures of himself wearing a Fez. I guess popular at that time. He was apparently a professional photographer who ran a photography studio in Fayette, AL during the time frame. He had at least three children a boy and a girl with the names Vilal (the boy I think) and Florina??? and another child, Ambody???? (probably born in Albertville, AL about 1908-1909) Any information would be greatly appreciated. BJ
