    1. [JOHNSON] My most wanted Johnson
    2. Dr. Gerald N. Johnson
    3. David Johnson died in Cape Girardeau County MO in 1823. Wife Margaret. Sons Jonathan, Ransom, Constant, Davis, Noble, William. Daughters Willey Elmey and Sarah. My gggp Noble was married to Margarette Pinkerton in Perry County MO in 1829. They had several children in the 1830 census some old enough to have been born about 1814-1816. Noble was born in 1796, Margarette in 1806. That all points to a first wife, who was she? Or were these children orphans from Jonathan (and Mary) who died in 1830 and William who died a few years earlier? Davis and William were married in Christian County KY in 1808-1809. I think the family group was together for the 1810 Christian County KY census. David and wife, plus Davis and wife and William and wife joined the Bethel Baptist church at Jackson MO in 1812. At the first Bethel Baptist Associating meeting about 1815 or '16, Jonathan and William were messengers from the Turkey or Dry Creek Church (in what is now Bollinger County. Noble and Davis were messengers to the St. Francis Baptist Association representing the Little Vine Church (Madison Co. MO) from its founding in 1850 through 1863. During that time Davis's son Joseph D. was also at the association meetings and eventually was ordained a Baptist preacher. Davis in the 1850 census said he was born in SC. Noble said the same, but ten years later (but only 8 years older) Noble said NC. There were about 18 David Johnsons in the two Carolina 1790 census. The David Johnson of Lancaster Co SC stayed there (also had no children) to become governor of SC about 1840 so that one is eliminated. What I don't know is where in NC or SC the family stayed, or if they stay in one place? Then who is Margaret, wife of David? And who are their parents? Gerald J.

    3. Eric H. Johnson wrote: Except that the Johnstone came from stone referring to estate, not son. And the 1790 census puts Johnson third, not fourth. There were 21,000+ Smiths (based on a trade as in black smith, silver smith...), 11,000 Jones and 10,600 Johnsons. Here in Central Iowa, it looks like Johnson could outnumber any three other names put together in many area phone books, though officially we Johnsons just outnumber Anderson and Larson individually, not together. You missed my comment that in old English, Fitz meant "son of" so Fitz Gerald would be the son of Gerald. That doesn't explain the use of Fitz alone. There were Jonssons from Sweden in the Swedish settlements along the Delaware that were established by 1638 that blended into the New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania colonies in the next 150 years and likely their names became fully Anglicized like their customs. So there is some early history of Svenske Johnson in this country as well as Johnsons from the English islands. 1. [JOHNSON] BRICK WALL
    2. My JOHNSON brick wall is my great grandfather, A. Leander Johnson, b. 1834 in OH and lived most of his life in Van Wert Co. OH, but died in Adams Co. IN in 1907. I found a sibling, his sister Roxana, b. 1835 in OH (where ?) and married Harlow Richmond in Crawford Co. OH in 1857. Roxana lived in Van Wert Co. OH in 1861 and moved to Sacramento CA and in city directory in 1881. Everything I have on A. Leander Johnson is under his middle name - I don't know what the "A" stands for, except it's on his tombstone. He is buried in Metzer cemetery in Van Wert Co. OH. He married Sarah Varney in 1865 and later married Elizabeth Harden Whitright in 1878. I believe the John W. Johnson and Roxana Johnson that are listed on the register of deaths from Van Wert Co. are his parents, but I cannot prove this. As a child I remember hearing older family members talking about ancestors leaving children with friends and neighbors and going to the gold rush. I believe John & Roxana came back to Convoy OH to live with their children prior to their death. Some of the next 2 generations moved to Sacramento - must have been a connection. Anyone having a Leander, b. 1834 in OH and a Roxana, b. 1835 in OH in any of their family tree??? I would love to hear from you. Tired of this brick wall..Jean Johnson Fitzgerald

    1. [JOHNSON] David William Johnson 1811
    2. My brick wall is David William Johnson. He is my great grandfather through his daughter, Eliza Johanna Johnson. I know he lived in Graysville, Putnam Co, MO. He lived next to Benjamin Rose, the father of David Johnson's second wife, Susanna Martha Rose. His first wife was Hester Johnson (her maiden name). They were married in Shelby Co, Indiana. I think David was born in Ohio abt 1811. I believe David William Johnson or Hester Johnson may be the grandchild of William Johnson and Phebe Bonnel. I do not have any proof other than they seem to be in the same location as other family members most of the time. Any information on these people would be appreciated. 1. Re: [JOHNSON] Jones > Johnson
    2. Eric H. Johnson
    3. Randy, To say the Jones came from Johnson would not be correct. Only that the names mean the same thing. As Europe became Christianized, the common names used were often derived from the Bible. One of, if not the most common name was "John", in what ever form it took in the native language. Therefore names such as Jon, Ian, Jan, Johan, Johannes, Ivan, Juan, Jean, etc. were all derived from the Biblical name of John. Thus when you apply the regional patronymic you end up with Jones, Jansen, Johansson, Ivanovich, etc. The source of much the information was an article entitled "You Doesn't Have to Call Me Johnson" which I found on one of the genealogy sites on the web (Ancestry.com I thought). I just did a search for it and could not find it. Regards, Eric > Very informative. > Could you direct me to someplace that would explain that Jones came > from Johnson. I was of the understanding they were Very split apart > by many centuries, and of war-faring tribes that fought each other > in pre Roman days.
