Because Stone referred to the land, not family. A family estate. Clearly over a couple millennia of surnames, there have been MANY sources for the surname Johnson, from varied customs greatly modified by biased reporting clerks who spelled what they wanted, not necessarily what the reported said or used, neglecting whether the reported could read or spell. And once the colonial and post colonial era clerk wrote on rare paper with rare and near permanent ink, no amount of protest would cause him to change the record. So when researching the line we have to accept all versions, from Jonson through Johnson, Johnston, Johnstone to Jorganson as potential ancestors. We can't be sure that in the days when surnames were not heavily used that the occasional surname didn't come by adopting one from an admired neighbor totally unrelated. Surely in some places the effective surname came from the name of the village, perhaps earlier from the name of the province. That usage may primarily depend on how far the named was from home. Gerald, >> Except that the Johnstone came from stone referring to estate, not son. << The same reference from which I got much of the information listed "ston" as opposed to "stone" as a patronymic, which was the form I listed. >> And the 1790 census puts Johnson third, not fourth. There were 21,000+ Smiths (based on a trade as in black smith, silver smith...), 11,000 Jones and 10,600 Johnsons. << Thats what I get for trusting tertiary information rather than going to the primary documents. The article to which I referred listed Johnson as fourth, and further stated that the top five names today are the same top 5 as in 1776, only the order has changed slightly. I did not check the actual census figures. >> There were Jonssons from Sweden in the Swedish settlements along the Delaware that were established by 1638 that blended into the New Jersey, Delaware and Pennsylvania colonies in the next 150 years and likely their names became fully Anglicized like their customs. So there is some early history of Svenske Johnson in this country as well as Johnsons from the English islands. << Quite true, however their influence on surnames was relatively insignificant in comparison to what it would be 100 years hence. As an interesting aside, the first President of the United States was a Swede (no George Washington was not Swedish). See: http://home.nycap.rr.com/useless/washington/washington.html Further, the flag of Philadelphia is Blue and Yellow, in recognition of the founding Swedes whose flag comprises the same colors. Hello. I am researching Henry JOHNSON . Henry was born in Madison Co., Ohio in 1814. I would really like to discover who Henry's parents were. They were from Pennsylvania according to some of the censuses I found Henry on. Henry married Rose Ann CLOVER in 1845 in Franklin Co. Ohio. I haven't found Henry and Rose Ann in the 1850 census yet. In 1860, they were living in Madison Co. Ohio. By 1870, they were in Doniphan Co. Kansas. Is anyone else researching JOHNSONS from PA that moved to OH about 1810 ??? Thanks so much for your time. Hi to all, My brick wall is Wm Johnson son of Jacob married Elizabeth Jane Ramsey daughter of Robert and Nancy Clark Ramsey 1844 Pike co. KY. I found Wm and Elizabeth in Pike Co. Ky in 1850 . William being born according to census in VA aprox 1824. Also listed in household is James Johnson according to Census same age as William. I am presuming they are Twins. The Ramsey Females listed in the household are sisters to Elizabeth. There is record of James Johnson and Margaret Ramsey's marriage in Dec of 1850 in Pike co. Elizabeth's mother Nancy Clark Ramsey married Elijah Porter and they live in the house next to Wm and Elizabeth. Elizabeth's brother John Ramsey is also living in a house next to Elizabeth. I am presuming that Andrew Porter listed in the House with William and Elizabeth is a son of Elijah Porter. I would like to find Jacob the father of William and Where in Va. they came from , also who was Williams mother, were there other siblings for William and James Johnson. As you will note there is also a younger William Johnson age 22 in the same house with Wm and Elizabeth Johnson on this census so that leaves the question of were the Johnson men in this household brothers cousins or both. Also, which were the brothers and which the cousins listed in Pike co. Ky 1850 Census household #127: Wm Johnson age 26, Farmer,b. VA, (son of Jacob) Elizabeth J age 21 b. KY (daughter of Robert and Nancy Clark Ramsey ) James R. age 4 b. Ky (known as Buck, had at least one son Volley Johnson) Louisa J. age 1 b. Ky (known as Lucy jane married #1 unknown Pendleton, #2 Reuben Knight. Lucy died 1886 in Somervell co. TX) Margaret Ramsey age 21 b. Ky Ann Ramsey age 17 b. Ky Andrew Porter age 22 b.Ky Wm Johnson age 22 Labourer b. VA James Johnson age 26 Labourer B. VA (married Margaret Ramsey) House # 126 contained Elijah Porter age 45 b. Va and wife Nancy age 41 b. Ky , along with thier children. (Nancy is the mother of Elizabeth Johnson, Margaret and Ann Ramsey.) House # 128 contained John Ramsey age 23 b. Ky and wife Mary age 21 b. Ky and thier children Tamsey age 3 and William R. age 6 mos. ( John is the brother of Elizabeth) Any help with this family would be appreciated. I have collected a lot of down line information and am willing to share. I also have pictures of Elizabeth, Buck and Volley Johnson who is son of Buck Johnson. It is also possible that Buck had a daughter Elizabeth born aprox 1872 that married a Murphy in TX. sincerely Nancy Sanders paul@txol.net
