I guess I thought that I was the only one that couldn't find my JOHNSON ancestors. Thanks to all of you for the reassurance that this surname is very difficult to research! The 1855 Schenectady County NY state census lists my gggrandfather as William Johnson of Seneca Cty., NY residing with Gitty Ann Johnson and her children from her previous marriage (Van Vorst). Their record of marriage also lists a William Johnson marrying Gertrude (Johnson) Van Vorst in January of 1855 in Scotia, NY. Gertrude's headstone indicates that she was the wife of J. H. Johnson and Schenectady city directories also note that she is the widow of James Johnson. I have not been able to find why he is listed as both James and William nor have I found any other references to him. James and Gertrude had two children, James H. and Frank Johnson. Family tradition says that James Johnson stowed away on a barge traveling the Erie Canal as a child and was brought up by the owner, Arent Stevens (Gertrudes father) . He married Gertrude who was 20 years his senior and volunteered for the Civil War. James never returned from the war and Gertrude thought that she was a widow. Twenty years later, James contacted her and told her that he had been living in Kansas City. He was remorseful about his absence and promised to return. Before that could happen, he was murdered by his business partner. Help!!!!!!!!!!!! Kathy Shouse

Hi Cheryl, Been feeling overly helpful the last couple of days.... Found your Elliot Johnson at www.ancestry.com listed in the Ancestry World Tree submitted by the following people: bigdaddy59@ky.freei.net craig@tgtel.com Don't know if these are people you have corresponded with or not but thought it may help. Regards and good luck, Kelley
Well, I've hesitated about submitting this, because I guess I feel it's hopeless, but here goes again - and again. I cannot get past my great grandfather - JOSEPH ABNER JOHNSON - supposedly born around 1837 in either Alabama or Mississippi. There was always a story in my family about two brothers leaving Pontotoc Co., MS and a large family, and heading South for Neshoba Co. - one of them, I suppose, being my great grandfather. I don't know how true it is. The first and only record I have of Joseph Abner is the 1860 Neshoba Co. census where he appears with wife, Mary Undine BROWN, and one child - my grandfather, John R. Johnson, born in Neshoba Co. in 1859. It says that Joseph was a wagon maker. It lists Joseph's age as 23 and Mary's as 21, but I believe she was fudging on her age, as her tombstone reads "born in 1842", so in 1860, she would have only been 18. I believe they probably got married in about 1857-58. They had another son, James H. Johnson, in 1862. By 1863, my great grandfather had died, and I am now trying to find out if died in the Civil War. He was only about 26 when he died. Mary remarried in about 1865, I guess, to a Judge Samuel McNeil, a man much, much older than she. They had two or three more children, and then he died. Much later, Mary married a third time to a Pinckney Webb, but had no more children. Don't know where Joseph and Mary got married. The closest marriage record I've seen was a Joab Johnson and a Mary M. Brown who married in Pontotoc Co. in 1858. The middle initial in Mary's name could have really been a "U", but mistaken in the old-fashioned handwriting for an "M". Also, I guess the name, Joab, could have been short for Joseph Abner. What does anybody think? Any help appreciated. Thanks in advance. Sue Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net
I have scanned everyone's brick walls hoping someone would be looking for Elliott, but no luck. I am going to list mine anyway. Elliott Johnson s/o Robert and Rachel Helton Johnson b ca 1819 in Breathitt Co. (now) Kentucky. Married Hettie/Easter Blanton ca 1840. In the mid to late 1890s Elliott, who was then a widower, left Kentucky for Oklahoma. He eventually settled in Pittsburg Co. near Hartshorn. I have never been able to locate him in Oklahoma. Does anyone have a suggestion. Cheryl

Long shot my Johnson line is on the Tn & Ky border Cumberland County Ky and Clay (Overton) county Tn. See www.familytreemaker.com/users/j/o/h/William-C-Johnson You have many of the same family names. Possible your Joesph could be an older sibling to Sarah born circa 1839. She was the oldest in the 1850 census. Good Luck William C. Bill Johnson

I am new to genealogy, just started a few months ago. I have found quite a bit of info on my grandfather's side of the family, but I am stumped at where to go for help in researching my grandmother's side of the family. What I do have is: She was born in Essex, Page, Iowa on Nov 5, 1914 to Joseph C. Ross and Elsie E. (Johnson) Ross. She had 3 brothers-Fred, Randall and Marion, and 3 sisters-Leona, Francis and Helen. When she was 2 years old she moved from Iowa to Akron, Washington, Colorado, with her parents and Fred and Randall and Leona and Frances. I am at a stand still for the Johnsons and Rosses. My grandfather is still living but doesn't remember much of that and my grandmother passed away in 1997. My parents were divorced when I was a baby so I really don't know much of anything except what is in her obit., she died in 1997. I do know also, that her brother Randall and sister Francis were both living (at the time of her death in 97). I didn't know my grandparents well because of the divorce so never got to know the other family members. If anyone knows of any of these lines, please let me know. I am at that brick wall. Thanks, Lori
