    3. Hello Norma, Thanks for writing back. I also have another James Johnson unrelated (most likely) to the other James Johnson. My GGGrandmother, Elizabeth CARTER of Indiana was married first to a James JOHNSON. In 1864, he served her with divorce papers in Iroquios County, Illinois, where I believe Elizabeth was then living with my GGGrandfather, Scott S. ETHINGTON, as Scott's mothers family, the SHERRILLs were there in Iroquois County. I don't know anything else about this James Johnson. I put this on the Johnson List to get all of these names, dates and places "out there." Good luck to you, Marie Lewis-Cook ----- Original Message ----- From: Norma Bremer <esther@i-205world.net> To: The Cook's <FCEC@lvcm.com> Sent: Friday, July 07, 2000 8:04 AM Subject: Re: [JOHNSON] Johnson in Daviess County, Missouri > Hello my heart stopped with the james Johnson but realized it was the wrong > date. 1. [JOHNSON] Hocking County OGS Chapter
    2. Arthur H Laube
    3. Darlene and I and others have been corresponding about a cemetery at the New Mt. Pleasant Methodist church and about the Johnson/Johnston name in this area - I thought others might be interested in some of this : > You no doubt know there is a little spot in the road, on route 93, that is > called Mt. Pleasant., so I know some of the members, and just talked to one > couple weeks ago, and they told me nothing about a new Church. OK - but that is not a new church - Before 1818 a group had been meeting in the homes of David Johnson for Bible study and to worship God. David lived in Swan Township(now Vinton county - then Hocking county) a few miles south of the Swan/Falls (later Washington)Township line. My great-great-grandfathers Samuel Johnston and Henry Iles were trustees of the New Mt Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Church when they organized in 1818 to buy land and build the first church on this New Mt. Pleasant location. This first effort was premature and the building was not actually erected until 1830. Many of my family lived in the New Mt. Pleasant, Ilesboro area and are buried in the two cemeteries associated with the Methodist church located in each hamlet. The deed transferring the land to the New Mt. Pleasant Methodist Episcopal Society was not recorded until 1939. The facts were further confused because the New Mt. Pleasant church was south of the Vinton County line - when that county was formed in 1850. Several local historians were led to believe that the Ilesboro church, founded 1842, was the first Methodist church in the southern part of Hocking County, but that is not so. Samuel and Philip Sain, in 1845, platted New Mt. Pleasant. They were no doubt influenced by the success of Henry Iles who had platted Ilesboro in 1838. This scenario is documented and discussed with several maps, in a book we gave to the Hocking County OGS chapter but who I now understand no longer have it in their holdings in the Logan Public Library. A Family History Dedicated to Amos Carr Johnston One of Our Eight Grandparents. Arthur H. Laube (Hal) and Betty Jean Clark (BJ) Laube Copyright October 1995. In two volumes. I am dismayed to recently learn that it is no longer in the Logan Library. If this is true then I wonder if our other two books are there? The Nimon Family (July 1991) Same authors. The Nimons lived in Ilesboro - about 2 miles north of New Mt. Pleasant on 93. Louis Clemens Laube 1867-1928 Selec ted Ancestors From Baldingen, Aargau, Switzerland and Darmstadt, Germany. He helped bring electricity to Ohio. ( July 1997). Same authors. The Laubes, and several of their descendants live in Logan. Earlier, cousins reported that these books were in the library, now I would very much appreciate it if someone would check again and let me know if any of these books are there. We are writing the family history of another family, Mater/Mateer, who contributed to descendants now living in Logan and in Ohio, but unless I am satisfied that these other three valuable books are to be acknowledged and safe guarded I will not give another one to the Hocking County Chapter of the OGS. The Hocking County Chapter has never acknowledged any of our three book gifts, in fact, over the years we have never been able to been able to establish any communication with any officer of that organization. I am no longer a member of the Hocking County OGS chapter because they haven't sent sent me any annual membership information for several years. Fortunately I gave another copy of the Johnston Family book to New Mt. Pleasant Methodist Episcopal church who very much appreciate it and I am sure they are taking good care of it. Also there is a copy of all of these books in OGS at Manchester, Ohio and at LDS in Salt Lake City. Regards to all Hal > Now I know where its at, and > I know where I'll be going tomorrow. 3. This line has turned out to be a rather thick brick wall--from NY to OHIO to ILL. to CA. My ggg-grandfather, William JOHNSON is first found (by me) in New York City, NY, an employee in the woolen mills. He is married to Mary LEGG at the time their son, Henry JOHNSON is born (Nov. 16, 1821 Brooklyn, NY). In 1835, I know the three of them moved to Meigs Co., Ohio where William farmed for 9 years, before returning to his eastern home for the rest of his life. Gg-grandfather, William JOHNSON learned the trades of cooper and carpenter, and "started for himself soon after attaining majority". Prior to 1852, we know from family records that he spent two years in Iowa and three years in Quincy, Illinois. In 1852, he came West to Jamieson Creek, Sierra County, California, crossing the plains with ox teams. He mined a few months, stayed the winter in Sacramento, and then purchased goods that he sold to the miners in Gibsonville. He merchandised and ran a hotel for about 2-3 years there, then settled (1855) nine miles south of Yuba City in Sutter County, California, where he became a land owner and rancher of 240 acres. In 1854, he had married Eliza JOHNSTON (d. May 30, 1862), a native of Illinois. She left behind two children John William JOHNSON (1856-1922) and Mary E. JOHNSON (1859-1895). Does this tie in with anyone? Thanks in advance. Barb Orme Northern California

    3. I think it was more likely the affectation of the county clerk. Some with English ancestry preferred T some with Svenske or Norske ancestry preferred SS... So the records varied. Much of the time the individuals being recorded couldn't read or write so couldn't spell or correct the clerk. I know my gggp Noble Johnson could read and write, I've seen film of documents he wrote, yet the marriage record for his 1829 marriage calls him Noble Johnston... Gerald J.

    3. I posted this on Vinton County, Ohio list in answer to several questions. I thought the Johnson listers might have something to add. My Samuel Johnston 1784-1861, the progenitor of a Washington Township tribe, arrived before 1820. Before that he married Elizabeth Kerr in Ross County. I believe he was born at Mt. Ephraim, Hopewell Township, Washington Cty., PA. For years I was side tracked by the t in his name since I only looked at johnsons - later I found out that many of his records and his parents records were johnson. In case you haven't noticed there are examples in the Ohio early census of townships with only johnson in one decade and then that same township will have only johnston in another decade-- There were many early johns(t)on coal miners in the Hocking/Athen and I suppose Vinton area. I often wondered why my gggrandfather Samuel ever came to New Mt. Pleasant - and I convinced myself that he scratched at coal deposits which were near the surface - making enough money to buy more property scratch out the coal - sell it - and get more property. He started with nothing but the family always lived well and his grandchildren always thought they were a bit better than most folks - and maybe they were. Very few of them were farmers. If you get to New Mt Pleasant Methodist church or Logan Library look up our book - I attempted to take the line back into Scotland and England. I had to make a lot of assumptions - but I am close enough to the truth to give my children an idea of what that part of their family was probably like. Some true blue genealogists would add. "And yes his books my show you how not to do it!" Well my wife and I have published a memorial to six of our eight Grandparents and we might just get the last two done. And we never would have done that if we hadn't limited our time to several years on each one. One of my wilder speculations was that a line of Johnsons became Quaker and dropped the T because it was a symbol of the sword and dagger and there was one story that the T had been conferred upon a Johnson for some heroic, bloody deed. Later when some of the line were no longer Quaker they brought back the T. It can probably never been proven, but then none to date has disprove it - although there have been cries of hogwash and so forth. Good luck to all of those who attempt to pass on a little ancestral lore to their descendants. Hal

    3. To all Johnson/Johnston researchers: What Hal wrote is true... my name is Johnstone. My grandfather added the e to the name. His father was Johnston and his grandfather was Johnson. We have our own theories in our family why that happened. So Hal's lesson is true! Don't get stuck looking at just one spelling. Our family tracks backward from Indiana to Illinois to Michigan to Ohio. Lots of Johnsons in Ohio! I didn't know our name had changed until I started doing genealogy. Keep on looking!
