I just got a reply from Jeannet Greiving, sent her an e-mail it would not go through. I tried the IL marriages, Frank Barnes Johnson married Mattie Warner in Whiteside County, ( I know Frank Barnes Johnson is a different name) Mattie is buried in Ohio. None of the dates seem to make sense, Frank Barnes Johnson married my grandmother in IA in 1880. I wonder if he just left Mattie for IA, met up with my grandmother, and they went from there. Got any ideas? Thanks, Jan

It has about 13 adults from about 20 yrs to at least 90 yrs.(and a couple children. one identified) Two of the identified people in the photo are: Jeff & Annie Johnson Pack. He is the son of Green Pack & Texanna Goins of Patrick. Annie Johnson is the daughter of Zacharia & Lucy Johnson of Patrick. Zacharia is the son of James Johnson of Patrick.(Have a picture of Zach & Lucy Johnson also. abt 1915-1920?) The other identified person is Lissy Brim. The Brims were associated and neighbors with the Packs and Johnson's. Another Pack, Heston Pack, daughter of Green & Texanna Pack married Adrin/Abrin Brim, 1906, in Patrick. Son of Wm. & Melisa J Brim of Stokes Co, NC.(not identified in picture) The other identified person is a Nancy Maybury/Mayberry. She was associated with the Packs and Brims, but don't know the exact relations. I have stories of her baby sitting the Pack children. If you are associated with the Packs, Brims, Johnson's, or would like to see if you might know anyone in this picture, please contact me off-list. I'll send it to you. Sure is a lot of the past sitting and standing in this picture. Hank Mabe Researching Pack/Mabe mabeone@aol.com

I am interested in finding Peter Johnson and his wife Harriet after 1880. They married in 1880 in Hamilton County Texas. I have had a hard time finding them after that date. I know nothing about Peter, but Harriet was originally Harriet Cole and married Levi (Leroy) Davis in 1859 Angelina County Texas. Although Levi is not on the casualty list for his outfit in the civil war, she is a widow with one child after the war. In 1880 she is found on the census alone and her son is living with someone else. I also found a marriage license for her and Peter Johnson in Hamilton, but have not been able to find anymore. Would like to know if they had children, or where they are buried, or even just where they lived after the marriage. I found a Peter Johnson on Ancestry.com that said that he lived in Comanche county. I have been unable to prove that. Harriet's father was killed in Comanche County in 1875. Comanche County adjoins Hamilton County, Texas. Any help would be appreciated. Linda Bowden

I was under the impression that we were not to send attachments through the list. I for one have deleted my message without opening. I hope I haven't missed something I would have appreciated. I am still trying to find out who my ggrandfather, Edward Johnson (married to Annie Cammidge) had for parents and where they came from before they went to Ontario. He would have been born in the mid 1800's (in Ontario). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Shirley Dumma Madeira Park, B.C. Canada sdumma@dccnet.com

Hello fellow Johnson researchers, In reply to Tom J. about the Johnson surname. Here is the last portion of his email to Johnson Rootsweb: What variety of Danish names are changed to Johnson when migrating to the USA ? When are the Danish names changed to their new USA name when migrating, when they leave, sometime during the voyage, when they arrive or when they are naturalized? I will appreciate your reply to the above, Tom J. TomJohn01@aol.com Tom and other Johnson researchers, In answer to your question of when their named changed was when they entered the US. Although many many versions of surnames are amongst us. This is from the person whom they contacted when entering the US heard their name. Now actually from the area in which they came from Johnson was not actually their surname at all. I too have relatives from the area near Denmark and have been in contact with them for 6 months now. Both by telephone and emails. The Johnson part came in this way. Their fathers first name was actually Jon spelled like this in Denmark or perhaps his father. It all depends who was the eldest. Let me explain how they name people in the Scandinavian region. A child's first name from that region came from usually a dead relative's first name, followed by partially the fathers first name. Thus there last name changed considerably over there. Example: Lets say a child's first name came from a dead person name of Nils (a common name there) and the child's father was Jon (another common name) so now this child would have a name of Nils Jonson. Jon being the father's first name followed by son, hence "Jon's son". The last name could have variations in spelling as well such as: Jonson, Jonsen, Jonsøn, Jonsson, Jonssen, Jonssøn and etc. A last name could also have changed by the farm in which they lived on. The farm names never hardly changed and quite a few people took the farm name as a last name as well, they either dropped their last name or added the farm name on the end. Very confusing I know. Had I not been in contact with my relatives I would not had known this information myself. Now lets say a girl child was born. She too would take part of her fathers name. Lets say she was name after a female relative named Kari (a very common name there)(Carrie in the US spelling). Her name now would have been Kari Jonsdatter. Or the last name could have been also Jonsdtr. In the US in comes out to Jon's daughter. Again the farm name applies. It was not until around the 1800's sometime their surname actually stayed from generation to generation. I hope this helps you and others. Ron Hawkins
Anyone Connect with Johnson's from scotland. Early to Mid 1800's Settled in Bladen, Sampson, or Robeson County North Carolina.???
Johnson Listers: Here's another needle in the hay stack for us. My gfather, Henry Johnson, USA name version, born in 1845, migrated to New York by his self in 1866. He received his naturalization in 1872. He then married Katie Otis in 1878, had their first child, Chester A., and two years later to Texas. I have them pretty wel covered until they passed away in Houston, Texas in 1918 and 1927. I'd be happy to furnish any Texas details. Can you fill in any info from 1845 in Denmark to 1884 when they left New York. Knowing there are a good many Danes amongst us let me ask the following: What variety of Danish names are changed to Johnson when migrating to the USA ? When are the Danish names changed to their new USA name when migrating, when they leave, sometime during the voyage, when they arrive or when they are naturalized? I will appreciate your reply to the above, Tom J. TomJohn01@aol.com
