    1. [JOHNSON] Charles Johnson from either NY or Chicago, ILL
    2. I am seeking information on Charles Johnson. He married a Lodema Williams in Idaho and they had six children. Later it was found out that he had another family in the Chicago area or in New York. He returned to them, only to return back to Lodema during his dying days and she nursed him until his death. Does this ring a bell with anyone? Pamela

    2. As long as we're sharing..... I want ancestors with names like Rudimentary Montagnard or Melchizenick von Steubenhoffmanschild or Spetznatz Giafortoni, not William Brown or John Taylor or Mary Smith. I want ancestors who could read and write, had their children baptised in recognised houses of worship, went to school, purchased land, left detailed wills, had their photographs taken once a year (subsequently putting said pictures in elaborate isinglass frames annotated with calligraphic inscriptions), and with informative inscriptions on their well-preserved headstones. I want family members who wrote memoirs, enlisted in the military as officers, or served as schoolteachers, councillors, or town historians. I want kin who were patriotic and clubby, joined every local society they could find, who kept diaries, had paintings made of their houses, and who put a date on every piece of paper they touched. But most of all, I want ANCESTORS I CAN FIND!! (Unknown)

WHO WERE MY ANCESTORS DID THEY LOOK LIKE ME. THEY CAME IN SHIPS ACROSS AN OCEAN SO BLUE. TO FREE TO PRACTICE RELIGION FOR ME AND YOU. I KNOW THEY SUFFERED MILE AFTER MILE. BUT FINDING THEIR STRUGGLE WAS ALL WORTHWHILE. SO IF THEY ARE IN HEAVEN LOOKING DOWN ON ME. I HOPE THEY ARE SMILING BECAUSE I RECORDED THE FAMILY TREE. BY SHIRLEY GOODMAN GGGRANDAUGHTER OF CHARLES B. 1. [JOHNSON] JOHNSONs in Berkshire, England
    2. Rockne H. Johnson
    3. Because the Viking settlements in England were in the North, many surnames there end in -son. Not so in the South. My wife, born in London and raised in Essex, and known there as Glennis Ann Wainwright, searched long and hard in the records of London and Middlesex without finding an ancestor with a -son name. Eventually she found a great-grandmother named Sarah Cheese, baptized in Westminster, St. Ann's Soho, in 1824, whose parents, James Cheese and Harriet JOHNSON were married at Clewer, Berkshire, on 14 April 1819. Glennis wants you to know that she is the 'real' JOHNSON. Berkshire is due west of London, definitely in the South. JOHNSON is definitely a northern name. So how did it get there? James and Harriet apparently lived just across the River Thames in Taplow, Buckinghamshire. Clewer, just outside the gates of Windsor Castle, may have been a posh place to get married. Harriet Mary JOHNSON was baptized in Taplow 6 December 1795, daughter of James JOHNSON and Martha Brown his wife. At their marriage in Taplow on 30 July 1772, he was called James JOHNSON of Burnham. The age given at his burial in Taplow in 1832 would have him born about 1769. Burnham is a couple of villages east of Taplow. Glennis and I were in England for three weeks in May and June and as we were driving east on the motorway the day before we were to leave, we were passing Burnham and, just for the hell of it, turned in. We found the Burnham Library and perused their local-history section. We were there long enough to see that JOHNSON had been a name there of some significance. There was a Sir William JOHNSON of Burnham Grove. Of course we all know that the most fun way to do genealogy is to start with an ancestor that we would like to have and work down. Does anyone know anything about Sir William? Rock

    1. [JOHNSON] Are we having FUN Yet?
    2. Rockne H. Johnson
    3. I am your newest subscriber. I have just read all the rules and I was delighted to see that we are here to have FUN! That's good because I have already found both of my JOHNSON ancestors. Dad was William Eugene Johnson born 5 August 1891 in Chicago. We all know that Chicago is in Illinois but, for Dad, Chicago was Chicago and Illinios was Illinois. Dad died in 1964. His dad was Chris, Christ, or Christian Philip Johnson born in 1853 in Denmark. I never knew Grandpa Johnson; he died in 1931, when I was a year old. We knew that he had taken the name JOHNSON when he came to America but there was much uncertainty in my generation as to what it had been in Denmark. Some said that it started with the letters "Bj-". In 1974 a cousin who lived in Illinois took me to see the family plot in Vernon Cemetery, near Half Day, Illinois. I was surprised to see a stone inscribed "Peter Johnson, b. 1815 d. 1889" on the one side and "Karen Johnson, b. 1820, d. 1893" on the other. I had never been told that my great-grandparents had come to America. In 1995, while researching in the Family History Library in Salt Lake City, I discovered Grandpa's hometown in Denmark. Knowing his birthday, I quickly found that he had been baptized Hans Philipsen Christian, that his father was Jørgen Pedersen, and that his mother was Karen Rasmusdatter. That made Grandpa "Hans Philipsen Christian Jørgensen". So he had shortened it. Jørgen Pedersen's father was Peder Jensen and Peder's father was Jens Neilsen. So much for surname research in Denmark. Jørgen Pedersen and his wife had come to America in 1874 after three of their sons, who had gone to sea, had already established themselves there as JOHNSONs. So it would seen that they were just taking the family name. It took me about three years to identify 90 direct ancestors born in Denmark. (Grandma Johnson was also Danish.) Never in that time did I see the name "John" in a Danish record. Conclusion? John is not a Danish name. I would go further to say that it is not a Scandinavian name. To the extent that it may be found in Scandinavia, I suspect that it had been transplanted from England. I guess that that is enough fun on that subject for now.
