My G-GF John Walter Royal JOHNSON died 8 Feb 1908 Richmond, VA. The family story is that while running in the rain to catch a street car, he slipped and fell (he might have been hit by the street car), and died soon after (hours, days, weeks?). I mention this because if he was hit by a street car, then maybe there is a story in a newspaper about the accident. I haven't found one. As you can see my info only goes back to the mid 1800's. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!!!!! Marinell

    3. I love to see roll calls occur. It puts out so much information on families. Since I have been on the mailing lists in RootsWeb, I have found about a dozen or more cousins I never knew existed. I actually was on a mailing list that refused to allow anyone to do a roll call and you are immediately removed from their mailing list if you do. Plus they did not allow any English or any other language other than German on the list. I am glad this list does not restrict communication.

    1. [JOHNSON] Elsie Johnson maybe Duffy?
    2. Linda Thiessen
    3. Seeking information on Elsie Johnson born 13 May 1893 to Ephraim Kylmälä Johnson and Maria Erika Helisten Johnson in Calumet, Michigan. Elsie's mother died in 1898 when Elsie was 5 years old. Ephraim remarried Kate (nee Keskitalo) Kurtti in 1900. Last record I have of Elsie was a listing in Polk's Houghton Co. Directory as boarding with Ephraim in Osceola, Michigan in 1916-1917. The only record I have found of an Elsie born 13 May 1893 in the SS Death Index is for an Elsie Duffy who died in Sept, 1985 last residence at St. Clair Shores, Macomb, Michigan. Would appreciate any information! Thank you! Linda

    3. Seeking ancestors and descendants of Thomas L. JOHNSON ca 1830-1923 (born GA died AL), married abt 1859 to Sara A. CARPENTER ca 1843-1924 (born GA died AL). Children: James Houston JOHNSON, 1860-1940, m/Missouri Lumpkin BAKER 1879 in GA (my g/gf) William Thomas JOHNSON, b.1861, m/Onie B. ?, ca 1884 Nancy Annie JOHNSON, b. abt 1865 Emily F. CARPENTER were both born in GA according to various census records but their first child James Houston JOHNSON was born in AL in 1860. The family lived in Newnan, Cowetta co, GA in 1870, Fayette co, GA in 1880 and Carroll co, GA in 1900. In early 1900's they moved to Bear Creek, Marion co, AL and Mountain Spring, Franklin co, AL. Thomas L. Johnson died in Bear Creek, AL about 1923. One family "story" indicates that Thomas L. JOHNSON and his brother "Bunk" served in the Confederate Army. A review of CSA records shows a Thomas L. JOHNSON and James S. JOHNSON were in Company B, 60th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infanntry, Evan's Brigade, Gordon's Division, Army of N. VA, known as Fanin Guards from Troup and Whitfield counties, GA. This Thomas and James are the children of Luke and Elizabeth JOHNSON who appear in 1850 Troup county, GA census. I do not know if this JOHNSON family is the one I am looking for. I have researched this line for 8 years, but have never been able to discover the parents of Thomas L. JOHNSON and Sara A. CARPENTER. Are there any JOHNSON researchers that can help with my search. Regards, Richard H. Soard gg/gs of Thomas L. JOHNSON rsoard@mindspring.com

    1. [JOHNSON] Roll Call - Johnson in Neshoba Co., MS
    2. Sue Howard
    3. It has been quite some time since I posted, but since we're having a roll call, I'll try again. It seems unbelievable to me that there are so few people researching the name, Johnson, in the State of Mississippi, when I know there were millions of them there or so it always seemed to me when I actually lived there. I live in the cold Northeast now and believe me, it's not easy trying to research Southern ancestors from up here! I am trying to get back beyond my great grandfather, JOSEPH ABNER JOHNSON, born around 1837, married a Mary Undine BROWN (and I can't find out anything about her family, either). The only record I have of them as a couple is the 1860 Neshoba Co., MS census. It listed him as being born in Alabama, being 23 years of age, and being a wagon maker. They had one child at that time - my grandfather, John Randal Johnson, born in 1859. I'm assuming that they probably married around 1857 or 1858. Of couse, to make things more difficult, the Neshoba Co. marriage records for that time period were destroyed by fire - probably in the Civil War, I don't know. So I don't know where they married. It could have been there, but it also could have been another county in Mississippi or even in Alabama. Mary was also born in Alabama in 1842 (according to her tombstone). I believe that Joseph Abner Johnson was killed in the Civil War, but I also have no proof of that. Mary and Joseph had one more son in 1861 - James H. Johnson - and then apparently, Joseph either died or was killed in about 1862 or 1863. Mary remarried in 1865 to a Judge Samuel McNeil who was a neighbor of theirs, I believe. They had a couple of children together, and then Judge McNeil died in about 1868. He was much, much older than Mary - about 40 years older. Much later, she married a third time to a Pinckney Webb, but they had no children. He also was a widower, like Judge McNeil. No one in my family knows where they came from and no one knows where JOSEPH ABNER JOHNSON was buried - I think probably at wherever he was killed in battle. Any help from anyone out there? Thanks in advance for any and all help. Wish you all a very Happy New Year! Sue (Johnson) Howard SueHoward@prodigy.net

    3. Can anyone out there in the Johnson world give me a clue or advice on finding my elusive great grandfather, PHYLETUS JOHNSON. I have been searching for him for 15+ years. This is all I know of him: He was born ca 1860 in IN or OH. Know nothing of his parents or siblings. March 1880 he married Nancy Jane Smallwood b 1856 in Nevada, Vernon Co., MO. he lived with her until May 1880 when he abandoned her remaining away about 3 years. Nancy Jane had a son, Willis born 1880. Phyletus returned again, this time staying 8-10 months, when he found out she was pregnant with my grandfather, Frank b Jan 1885, Phyletus abandoned the family once again, never to return. Nancy Jane filed for divorce and received the final decree May 15, 1889. Through searches I've found that Phyletus married Samantha Lockard in Warrensburg, Johnson county, MO Dec 1885. They had 2 children, he then abandoned this family also, they also don't know where he went. Except perhaps he was killed for his womanizing or perhaps he took on a new name and found another family. Can anyone help? Any advice is most welcomed. Thank you. Juanita 'Johnson' Schneider nitafay@yahoo.com
