There's only one squiggle different between Penbroke and Pembroke and sometimes the handwriting wasn't all that clear. Besides in the 1800s spelling wasn't a universal skill to clerks and census takers didn't pause to ask, "How do you spell that?" they just wrote what they heard modifying it by their heritage. Things like the t in Johnston come from that along with seeing Johnsen, Jonsson and other variations. I'm studying an 1870 Madison County Missouri census from the earliest available microfilm and I see some names that could have 6 or 7 different spellings depending on how I interpret the generic squiggles. Transcribers tried to limit their interpretation to a single version and that's not always possible and I've detect that transcribers sometimes didn't type precisely either. So take transcriptions with a grain (or whole salt shaker) of salt and take name spellings as "sounded like" more often than spelled precisely. My gggp Noble Johnson could read and had a beautiful handwriting but when he was married the second time, the JP put Johnston on the marriage certificate. -- Dr. Gerald N. Johnson <[email protected]>

Hi, I am looking for the parents of Jennie(Jenny) Johnson who married Thomas Dudley Isom II in St. Louis, Missouri in 1884. They had one child, Thomas Dudley Isom III born abt 1890 in Mississippi.Jenny died around the 1890's because she preceded her husband Thomas who died in 1895 in MS.I do not know where Jenny was born or even when. It is believed that she was part Indian or fullblood. Maybe that is why I have not been able to find out anything about her. ANd they were between the 1880 and 1890 census. We first thought that her last name was Byrd but that was corrected by an older family member. If anyone has any information about Jenny Johnson, please let me know.Thank you so much,Carol _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web!

Hi List: Can anyone provide descendents of Claese Barntson Johnson. Maybe he was born about 1710 or so? According to The Washington Ancestry: and records of the McClain Johnson and forty other......... by Charles Arthur of Greenfield, OH 1932 he moved to NJ and his parentage is: his father: Barent Johnson baptised 1681 his grandparents: Jan Barentsen van Zutphen and Jannetje van Borculo I am would like to know if one of his offspring might have been an Abraham Johnson born about 1740 who married Mary (last name unknown) and moved to Saratoga NY about 1795. I know this is a long shot, but as I have been stumped for a few years, I thought it might not hurt to ask. Johnna St Clair

Hi: I am looking for my elusive KEISSEL family. Peter Keissel m Catherine Clovak in Germany. They had 3 children: Catherine b. 1838 in Germany; Magdalena b. 1843 in Louisiana; & Jacob b. 1847 in Mississippi. Magdalena married Alexander Johns(t)on in 1863 in New Orleans, LA. They had 3 children: Walter Jarvis b. 1863; Hanna Caroline b. 1865; & David McCoy b. 1867. All were born in New Orleans, LA. After Alexander's death in 1869, Magdalena married Luke F. Higgins in 1874. In 1850, the Keissel's are listed under the surname KLEISSEL living in Harrison County, Miss. I cannot locate them in 1860. But do find Magdalena as widowed in 1870 in New Orleans, LA and find Jacob in 1880 New Orleans. Does anyone know if Harrison County has a birth index that goes back to this time period (1840s)? How bout a death index? Any suggestions on how to find this elusive KEISSEL family would greatly be appreciated?
